From the Desk of Pastor Jim… Bringing Jesus to a broken world!

Our culture has been battered by one crisis after another: shootings,

angry protests, scandals, and a constant barrage of mad pundits

shouting at each other in the media 24 hours a day. Our nation is

deeply polarized and fractured into splinter groups that demonize each

other on a regular basis. And, we have witnessed a dramatic increase in

violence in our streets, schools, theaters, and even in churches.

We’ve seen the rise in vile bigotry, hateful racism, and ignorant

prejudices against different cultures and peoples. And we’ve seen the

videos and heard the voices of people genuinely hurt by injustice or

poverty, or by having their beliefs challenged and ridiculed publically.

How should followers of Jesus respond to all the anger we see erupting

today? How can God’s people, the church, be the “peacemakers” that

Jesus commands us to be? How do we build bridges to each other

instead of walls around our hearts and homes? We can begin by loving

like Jesus loved.

Here are five important ways we can do just that:

1. Dignity

Psalm 8:5 says, “Yet You made them [mankind] only a little lower than

God and crowned them with glory and honor.” (NLT). That means God

created every person with dignity. To love others, we have to realize that

we all have been given the same worth and dignity. You can’t give these

to someone. It comes from God. You can only deny or affirm it in others.

I referenced this powerful verse in a sermon recently to highlight that

God wants us to honor others: “Be humble, thinking of others as better

than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

2. Diversity

God intentionally created everyone to be unique. You’re not one in a

million, you’re one in seven billion people drawing breath on the planet

today. If you’ve got a problem with people who are different from you,

you’ve got a problem with God. Racism, prejudice and bigotry are like

telling God He messed up because He didn’t make everyone like you.

From the Desk of Pastor Jim…continued While people in the world are divided over their differences and

diversity, the church is one place where people should get along.

God doesn’t want us to be color blind, he wants us to be color

blessed. We should celebrate diversity because it makes us

stronger. If you don’t like diversity you’re not going to like heaven

(see Revelation 7:9)!

3. Community

We need each other and we’re better together. God never

intended for us to go through life alone, lonely, and without the

support of other people. God wanted a family, but He wanted it to

reflect diversity. “So now Jesus and the ones He makes holy have

the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them

His brothers and sisters.” (Hebrews 2:11).

The church should be the place of unity and community where we

model the love of Christ for the world. As followers of Jesus Christ,

we are brothers and sisters. Our primary identity comes from God,

and all other affiliations will not be carried into heaven. We only

carry our relationship with God and each other into eternity.

4. Love

We were put on this earth to learn how to love. As Jesus says in

the Great Commandment, it’s all about learning to love God and

learning to love people. If you don’t learn that, you’ve missed your

purpose on this planet. We can be agents of love with people who

are completely different from us when we listen to

them, look them in the eye, learn from them, and laugh with them.

5. Reconciliation

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be facilitators of

reconciliation. If we’re not helping people reconcile, we’re not the

church. Mathew 5:9 says, “God blesses those who work for peace,

for they will be called the children of God.”

My prayer is for spiritual revival and awakening for all of us.

Society can’t keep heading the direction it is going right now,

because it leads to a dead-end. Eventually, we’ll either have a

spiritual breakthrough or a social breakdown.

Training Workers for the Harvest

As a District here in Texas, we believe that God is calling us to multiply disciples and churches. To support our congregations in this mission, we are committed to church planting, church revitalization, and leadership development. In this “Mission Moment,” we explore our work in the area of leadership development.

Healthy, disciple-making and multiplying churches need healthy and well-trained leaders. While every congregation is called to develop leaders, we believe that this is a vital area for our District to provide support. Therefore, we host our Annual Gathering and Pre-Gathering Seminars each Summer; regional Reboot | Retool | Refuel workshops in the Spring and Fall; and our Winter Leadership Retreat in Concan. We are grateful that these events help leaders with opportunities for education, inspiration, encouragement, and spiritual renewal.

Recently, we felt called to grow our engagement in the area of leadership development. Inspired by the ministry training program employed by our newest congregation, Bethel, Laredo, and the Latin American Lutheran Institute, we began dreaming about a ministry training program that would be online and on-demand to train and equip leaders for ministry. We are calling this program Workers for the Harvest.

In Matthew 9 we read that “Jesus continued going around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.’”

God has given us a big dream for better equipping more workers for the harvest by creating a new on-ramp for leadership development. We aim to provide faithful and mission-minded training to equip students to answer God’s call to greater Kingdom ministry as future ministry leaders, youth workers, evangelists, church planters or even contract pastors. And we need your help. First, we want to invite you to pray for this new ministry. Secondly, we’d like to ask you and your congregation to consider making a financial gift to help us launch this new program. And finally, prayerfully consider whether God may be calling you or someone you know to take the next step to answering God’s call by enrolling in Workers for the Harvest. If you or your congregation would like to learn more, contact me. I look forward to sharing about this exciting new ministry.
