Community benefits Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) has reached a non- binding agreement with Kimberley Marine Support Base Pty Ltd (KMSB) to develop a business case for a new multi-user material loading and offloading facility within the Port of Broome. The proposed project will expand the Port’s capacity for handling cruise ships and oil and gas trade through the construction of a floating wharf, additional heavy lift capability and associated on-shore infrastructure. The development aligns with KPA’s Master Plan for the Port of Broome. KMSB is a WA owned private developer with significant experience constructing industrial infrastructure in the Pilbara. The company is a proven investor and project manager, with the lead investor having developed an existing industrial marine support base within the Port of Ashburton. Community KMSB has committed to respecting local heritage and working with local people to ensure the project is developed in a way that benefits the community. Nyamba Buru Yawuru will be consulted and invited to participate throughout the project. Environment The need for land clearing or dredging of the sea bed is likely to be limited. The proponent will be required to meet all environmental approval requirements and regulator conditions to manage any impacts. Economic The project is estimated to generate approximately 250 jobs during construction and indirectly more than 450 jobs during operation. This is expected to contribute $135 million a year to the local economy.

    The new facilities would support the growth of trade in Broome across a number of industries and cargo types, including:

    Containerised imports and exports of general cargo.

    Agricultural exports, meeting the expected development of the cattle industry.

    Cruise ships, a floating wharf will increase access to Broome during the extreme local tides.

    A broader range of oil and gas equipment, including loads too heavy for current facilities at the Port of Broome.

    What the Port will handle Timeline

    KMSB has until early 2019 to develop its proposal and demonstrate a viable business case predicated on the ability to attract new trade to Broome

    Following KPA’s and the State Government’s review, the company will commence engineering, environment and heritage studies to gain the approvals required to commence construction.
