Fall is approaching and you can feel the excitement in the air …. it’salmost time for Nut Sales! The Nut Room is awaiting our shipment of 8,538 pounds of nuts. Its expected arrival is Wednesday, September 7th. Thanks to volunteers: Terry & Mary Sandberg, Signe & Gene Knief, Bob and Kathy Buzynski, Eileen Gunderson and Jerry, and Marcy Hartleip, we will be unloading on this day.  The exact time is never known until the truck driver calls that morning. Monica is ready to print the forms, bags and stickers are ordered, and I have purchased two new locks. And, the rooms are almost clean!

The committee met earlier this month and decided to change the lock code this year.   It has been “1926” for many years….the year that our club was chartered. Jerry is ready to install the code, but we need your advice on the number.  It needs to be 4 DIFFERENT digits and one that Quotarians will easily remember but not obvious. Monica will need to know our decision before she prints the forms, which will be distributed at the meeting Tuesday. Looking forward to another successful fundraising season. Thank you! Go Quotarians!

Each month our club’s Yearbook lists 3 to 5 members assigned to be the “hostess committee” for the upcoming business meeting. This committee is determined by the person doing the Yearbook. For 2016-17, Kathy Buzynski has drawn up the hostess committee assignments. She does try to take into consideration members who are gone during the winter, but has no way of knowing other travel plans, or when a member might not be able to attend a meeting. The first person listed is the chairperson for the month. Duties of the committee are as follows:

• Provide dessert for the meeting. • Arrive early, by about 5:15 p.m., to take money for meals. • Count and balance the money & turn in the reservation list to the treasurer. • Decorations are totally optional & not required.

Treasurer, Eileen Gunderson, brings a money bag for making change at the check-in table. The chair should contact each committee person at least 1 week prior to the meeting to discuss plans and ideas for dessert. Each member on the committee should contribute in some way, whether baking or providing a contribution toward ingredients or a purchased dessert. If a member is not able to attend a meeting when they are on the hostess committee, it would be helpful if they let the chairperson know and consider trading a month with another member who is able to attend. They should also let Kathy know of this change. She will help find a substitute for you if needed. After the reservation deadline, the Attendance chair will give the monthly hostess chair a count of reservations, usually about 5 days prior to the meeting. The Attendance/Hostess Committee chair will also provide the Monthly Hostess Chair with the reservation list prior to the meeting. It should be printed and brought to the meeting to use for taking money at the check-in table. Please call the Hostess/Attendance co-chairs Oletha O’Donnell or Pat Hagerstrom with any questions. Thank you!

Cops N Kids Book Giveaways: A Hot Find For Waterloo Summer Programs

COPS N KIDS BOOK GIVEAWAY

TOTALS

This summer 601 books were given away by

Quota at Waterloo free lunch sites.

This brings the grand total since the program

started in 2004 to 39,807!

The COPS N KIDS committee completed a busy schedule of book giveaways at 14 different sites during July and August. Pictured above, (Row 1) Officer Hoelscher stopped by Lafayette Park on August 2nd and talked with kids participating in the free lunch program located there. On July 29th, kids at the Boys & Girls Club in Evansdale (Row 2) enjoyed finding an interesting story to take home and treasure. Pictured below (Row 3 and Row 1 far right), children in the YWCA summer program had fun selecting their book and sharing their find with friends. Ginny Salkeld reported that as soon as the committee gets their last order of books stamped and sorted, they will be ordering what they need to use up the rest of last year's grant money. All that as Eileen Gunderson is busy working on new grant applications! Kudos to the COPS N KIDS committee and volunteers. It’s exciting that we’ve put nearly 40,000 books into kids’ hands!

Let’s Learn About: “Deafinitely Dogs”

Tonight’s program features a speaker from the non-profit organization Deafinitely Dogs! based in Cedar Rapids. Deafinitely Dogs! provides highly trained assistance dogs to those with disabilities specializing in Diabetic Alert Dogs, Hearing Dogs, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Dogs, Facility Dogs and Companion Dogs. This human-canine partnership allows for increased independence and feelings of security for persons with these disabilities. They also provide companionship and unconditional love.

Assistance dogs are very special. They serve a medical need that may or may not be visible to others. They perform tasks that mitigate the disability for their human partner. The work that these dogs do every single day is truly a miracle to the lives they enrich and touch. Deafinitely Dogs! relies on contributions and grants in order to provide this canine assistance; the program is entirely volunteer operated. It costs $2,500 to sponsor a dog to receive the specialized training it needs. At our June business meeting, a motion to spend $1,000 toward a Deafinitely Dogs! sponsorship was made, seconded, and approved by a unanimous vote of the membership. (This $1,000 was received by our club following the disbandment of District 7 and formation of Region 3.) The Hearing & Speech committee will consider providing an additional $1,500 needed to support the total cost of a $2,500 training sponsorship. Further information is forthcoming regarding our club’s sponsorship of a dog. Visit www.deafinitelydog.org for more information about the program.

Introducing Paula Kelly from Quota International of Fargo, North Dakota. She is the new Regional Director for Region 3. Regional Directors are dedicated individuals who, through communication and action, inspire Quota clubs to create sound beginnings for children. Paula will be in this position 2016-2018.

Monica Haag enjoys relaxing with friends at the Region 3 Convention this past spring. The next regional conference is set for April 28-30, 2017 in Sioux Falls, SD.
