ALRA BOARDREPORT

Hello Arbour Lake Residents!

It has already been a busy summer season at the lake! We are having record breaking numbers of people en-joying our fabulous facilities.

Our Canada Day pancake breakfast was over the top this year. The lake sta and volunteers prepared for 1000 people and 2000 showed up! We apologize for long wait in line, we did our best to keep up. Unfortunately, we had problems with our outdoor grill and the concession grill was our only option. We sincerely appreciate your patience with this unfortunate situation. Thank you for your kind words and praise. A special mention to Craig, Tara and the lake sta for all of their hard work in pre-paring for the event. We would like to acknowledge Kerri Lambert from Toonz jukebox for keeping our toes tapping while we waited for breakfast. Kerri is such an amazing DJ , everybody loved the “all Canadian” content ! Our ALRA board members, Peter & Jillian Wyatt, Ken Jones & Marianne Hollingsworth cooked their hearts out . It is great to see ALRA board members helping out with our events. Upcoming events are the Stampede BBQ & The Canadian Open Water Swim Championships.

Our AGM will be scheduled for September 28th. We will notify all Arbour Lake Residents by mail prior to the meeting. If you have any interest in becoming an ALRA board member, please contact us at the lake o ce. We would love to have people with knowledge of nance or the law on board.

We wish you all a festive, fun- lled summer holiday! Please refer to our website, facebook page, bulletin board, or stop by the o ce for updates on events and activities.

TNC PLUMBING & GAS FITTING

Welcome back to St. Ambrose School! We have a tremendous year ahead focused on learning through the arts, expanding our ideas and experiences, and looking at the world in new and di erent ways. To kick start this year, we invite our families to our School Council BBQ. Stay tuned for our weekly “Eye of the Storm” regarding details and opportunities to partici-pate in this great community building event.

As we ask for God’s blessing upon our school year, all families are invited to join us on Thursday, September 22nd at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Parish for our School Opening Liturgy.

Throughout the school year we will be focusing on friendships, healthy relationships and encouraging our students to “Be Merciful”. This will be highlighted throughout our Catholic Community of Caring assem-blies, our social justice projects, our buddy classes and all school activities.

We look forward to another successful school year as we work together to develop creative, active young citizens.

EVENTSRECAPEpi RunThank you to all those who ran, walked or donated to the EpiPen “Take Action” Run. This event was one of three events put on by the AAIA. The AAIA works to improve the quality of life for Canadians a ected by allergies, asthma and anaphylaxis through research and educa-tion. Congratulations to Lilly Byrtus who was announced as the top fundraiser on the AAIA take action website. Thanks again to everyone for their support of this event!

Thank you to the YVC volunteers for helping with set up and clean up, and cheering on the runners! We had amazing prizes donated from our local Crowfoot businesses including Goji’s frozen yogurt, Bernard Cal-lebaut, Heritage Park, Tony Roma’s, Cora’s Breakfast & lunch, Burger King, Panago and Amaranth. Thank you for your continued support of our events!

Learn to BikeWho had a ton of fun and learned about the basics of biking? All of our kids from our Learn to Bike Day Camp! 20 children learned bike basics, as well as road safety throughout a day of fun and games. Participants round-ed out the day decorating their bikes and having a mini parade. All of our bikers had a great time!

Police MotorcadePut your cameras away everyone, there were no celebri-ties or dignitaries at the motorcade practice performed by the Calgary Police Service. On June 15, the Calgary Police Service nished their mock motorcade at Arbour Lake for a quick lunch. A police motorcade is the road escort for only the most VIP, and includes police motor-cycles, unmarked cars and the like. Unfortunately, the motorcade was not in preparation for any particular VIP guest, but was simply for a training course they hold various times throughout the year. It was very exciting to witness our Calgary Police Service perform this spe-cial convoy.

Canada Day Pancake BreakfastWhat a great way to celebrate Canada’s birthday! We had a fantastic turnout at this year’s pancake breakfast. Over 2000 people were through the lake that morning to enjoy the event! With plenty of pancakes, it was a perfect way to celebrate Can-ada’s 149th birthday – Calgary style! Thank you to our Board Members Ken Jones, Marianne Holling-sworth, Peter and Jillian Wyatt for cooking sausages and pancakes for everyone! Thank you to Pat Kelly, MP Calgary Rocky Ridge and Michael Connolly, MLA Calgary Hawkwood for handing out pancakes and sausages. We were entertained by or local DJ Kerry Lambert, who played a mix of Canadian classics and Froot Loop the clown, who made balloon animals for over 3 hours straight. We could not have done this event without the help of the amazing volun-teers including the 12 YVC volunteers, Rahmah, Amanda L., Amanda, Andrew, Elda and Kennedy! Our local Crowfoot businesses also supplied us with some amazing prizes. Thank you to Tony Roma’s, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Calaway Park, Crave cup-cakes, Dominos, YMCA, Cora’s Breakfast & Lunch, Schanks, Burger King, Fabutan and Panago!

COUNCILLOR, WARD 2 JOE MAGLIOCCA403-268-2430 [email protected]/ward2Facebook: Joe Magliocca • Twitter: @Joe_Magliocca

On June 27th, Calgary City Council approved a property tax freeze for 2017. I voted in favor of the tax freeze for three rea-sons. First, residents of Ward 2 (via phone calls, emails and at town halls), were very clear that lower taxes should be a top priority of City Council. Secondly, many Calgary families are facing tough decisions due to the economic downturn in our province. Many Calgarians have lost their job or have seen their incomes decline. I believe that The City should do what it can to help Calgarians at this time by preventing their taxes from increasing. Lastly, I voted in favor of the tax freeze because City administration con rmed that the option to freeze property tax would lead to greater e ciencies and would not result in any service reductions. I would ask that the provincial government join us by freezing their portion of Calgarians property tax.

The Community Standards Bylaw which regulates neighbour-hood nuisances like yard maintenance, noise, and re pit use is being reviewed to ensure that it still meets the needs of citizens. The City is asking for your feedback; please send your ideas to improve the Community Standards Bylaw to [email protected].

Calgary Transit has completed a major review of 12 bus routes in the northwest and inner city resulting in changes to bus routes in Ward 2. E ective September 5, 2016, changes will be made to Route 97 (South Ranchlands – Scenic Acres) and Route 113 (North Ranchlands – Scenic Acres). To see all the new bus routes that go into e ect on September 5, 2016, please visit calgarytransit.com/2016ServiceReview.

Joe’s Tip:As our kids get back to school, please slow down and watch out for children on our streets and at our crosswalks. Safe streets are a responsibility of all of us.
