A note from our pastor

Dear Friends,

One of the main teachings during the season of Pentecost is to be on watch for when Christ will return. Read Luke 12:32-40. The primary truth Jesus teaches us about the Second Coming is that it is certain, but we cannot know the timing. Jesus calls us to be ready for His coming into our lives at any moment. He makes His case in the language of His day: “Let your loins be girded, and your lamps burning.” “The long flowing robes of the East were a hindrance to work; and when a

person prepared to work, they gathered up their robes under their girdle to leave oneself free for activity. The Eastern lamp was like a cotton-wick floating in a sauce-boat of oil. Always the wick had to be kept trimmed, and the lamp replenished or the light would go out.” (William Barclay, The Gospel of Luke, p. 167)

So, in a narrow sense, Jesus is referring to the Second Coming of Christ ― but in the wider sense, He is referring to the time when God’s summons enters a person’s life. Jesus is speaking of our whole life, lived every day by staying alert and awake. We never know when Christ will break into our lives with new experiences of the living Christ.

Yes, the Lord will return at the end of time, but let us not miss the moments when He enters into our lives to bless us and use us to be a blessing to others. Stay awake; Christ is with you every day.

New Bishop Friends in the Northwest District, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. At Jurisdictional Conference Bishop Scott Jones was appointed as our new bishop to begin September 1 when Bishop Janice Riggle Huie re-tires. A little about Bishop Jones. Scott Jameson Jones currently serves as the resident bishop of the Great Plains Ar-

ea of the United Methodist Church serving the states of Kansas and Nebraska.

He was born in 1954 in Nashville, Tenn. and was raised in Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana and Colorado. He received degrees from the University of Kansas (B.A. in Philoso-phy), Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University (Master of Theology) and Southern Methodist University (Ph.D. in Religious Studies). His dissertation research was focused on Wesley Studies and the History of Biblical Interpretation.

He was ordained deacon in the Kansas East Annual Con-ference and elder in the North Texas Annual Conference. From 1986 to 1997 he served as pastor of three congrega-tions in North Texas. In 2003-2004 he served as interim pastor at Stonebridge UMC in McKinney, Texas. From 1997 to 2004 he served on the faculty of Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 2004 he was elected a bishop by the South Central Ju-risdictional Conference and assigned to serve as the resi-dent bishop of the Kansas Area as of September 1, 2004. He was assigned to the Great Plains Area effective Sep-tember 1, 2012, which included the Kansas East, Kansas West and Nebraska United Methodist conferences. The three conferences joined together to become the Great Plains Conference January 1, 2014.

His most recent books are The Future of the United Methodist Church (2010), Staying At the Table: A Gift of Unity For United Methodists (2008), Evangelistic Love of God and Neighbor: A Theology of Discipleship and Wit-ness (2003), and United Methodist Doctrine: The Extreme Center (2002), all from Abingdon Press. Other books he has written include John Wesley’s Conception and Use of Scripture and Gathered Into One: The World Methodist Conference Speaks. He was co-author of Wesley and the Quadrilateral: Renewing the Conversation. He has been named associate editor of volumes 5 and 6 in the Bicenten-nial Edition of The Works of John Wesley, the scholarly edition of Wesley’s Explanatory Notes Upon the New Tes-tament.

Scott is married to Mary Lou Reece, who is president of Reece Construction Company. They have three children.

A Service of Installation is scheduled for October at Marvin UMC. More information will follow as it is con-firmed.

We WELCOME our newest members! On July 10,

Twilla and Darrell Wanker joined us, transferring from

another church.

We celebrated our Country’s birthday on July 4

with a gathering at Liberty with hotdogs, hamburgers,

watermelons and cantaloupes. About 125 attended.

The hot summer weather has arrived so, on our

August 18 monthly dinner we request “light” food,

even “finger” food, and we are going to have ice cream

for dessert.

On July 24 and July 31 we will hear from Rever-

end Charles Long and Reverend Bill Hedges while our

Minister Dick White and his family are on vacation.

Family Condolences……….

We mourn the passing on July 21 of our good

friend and long time member, DeWitt Blanchard.
