Fulfilling the requirements of these two programs shows our willingness to use practices that protect water quality, improve recycling and reduce waste. To protect county waterways, your Grounds Committee created three Rain Gardens with overflows, that capture the rapid run-off water and pollutants from our long parking lot. The shallow depressions of the rain gardens allow the soil to hold the water a short time while it is absorbed and used by native plants, some still to be planted. The soil filters and cleans the run-off rain water as it is absorbed into the ground. Thus, little water from the Club property will enter the city storm sewer system. Your Club Grounds Committee, realizing the rain flow problem about a year ago, began to dig the rain gardens, prepare the soil and plant native plants in these gardens. From the President

This fall, we are ushering in a New Member Recruitment initiative at the City Club. And, we are excited to involve you in the effort. As most of you know, our event business is doing very well, but our membership numbers have continued to decline. We have lost some wonderful longtime members this past year, and we will miss them greatly. Clubs across the country are struggling with eroding memberships and are looking for new ways to increase their numbers. The City Club is no exception. We want to eliminate the Way Forward fundraising drive in the next few years, but to do so we simply must increase membership. We have tried a lot of different strategies in recent years, including special discounts, local advertising, connecting with our Member Clubs, hosting parties for the public, and more. But experience shows us that the best way to attract new members is through our existing membership. That is what other private clubs have found most successful, and it is also how most of our current members found us in the past. Last year, our Strategic Planning Committee began work on a marketing plan to recruit new members. Our planning continues and we have set a goal to recruit 35 new members between September 1 and October 31. Is this attainable? Yes, but only if all of us get involved. The plan includes incentives for new members and for current members who bring in new members. What can each of us do right now? Start thinking about people you know that would enjoy the City Club. Try to come up with at least 5 names. Give the names, addresses and emails to Rachael at the front desk, and we will send them an invitation to the September 7 Open House where Programs and Classes and Signature Interest Groups will be spotlighting their fall activities. You will also be given an opportunity to add a personal note to the invitations before they are sent. Start thinking about who to bring to the September 7 Open House. Bring a prospective new member to lunch, or to the August 19 Lobsterfest, September 14 Lunch and Learn, or October 26 Dine and Discover. And let them know how excited you would be to have them become City Club members. Make those personal connections and invitations that can make the difference in getting someone to join. I know this isn’t always an easy thing to do. But I hope that you will be motivated by the potential to come closer to eliminating the need for Way Forward donations. And more members make our Club more inviting and engaging for everyone. Watch for more details about the New Member Recruitment Incentives in August and September. In the meantime, please know how much every single City Club member is appreciated. YOU are the reason the City Club exists. We are grateful for YOU!. I look forward to meeting your guests and our new members.

Art at the City Club The next artist who will be exhibiting in our gallery is Autumn-Grace Dougherty. The dates for her exhibit are Monday, August 15 - Sunday, October 2, with a reception on Thursday, August 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Artist Statement: My abstract paintings are made from a collection of reused textiles, old clothing, hand-painted and dyed fabrics. My heritage and formative years are rooted in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where fabrics feature prominently in crafting and quilt piercing traditions. I find in fabric a unique contrast between the material and the spiritual. While its worth seems insignificant when viewed as a mass-produced commodity, a piece of apparel can capture the unique essence of a loved one or memorialize a family’s history as it is passed down through the generations. Fabric, once so connected to the labor of its creation, has lost its history and become part of modern throwaway culture. I alter and reassemble the fragments of its previous life into an improvisational collage of abstract compositions. A collection of geometric shapes, color interaction, and vibrant patterns retell sublime moments from my everyday visual catalogue. In these moments of heightened attention, I refine my focus on life and am reminded that the transcendent quality of life is ultimately the most important. Artist Bio:

Autumn-Grace Dougherty was born in Boone, North Carolina, and received her MFA in Fine Art in 2013 from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She also holds an AAS in Fashion Design with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She studied at the Art Students League of New York where she was awarded the Richard Lahey and Carlotta Gonzales Lahey

Merit Scholarship. Dougherty has interned with the Textile Arts Center in New York City and has collaborated with Guatemalan artisan weavers through a design initiative sponsored by CARE international. She was awarded an artist residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2013. Her work has been included in group shows at Parenthesis Art Space and Interstate Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, as well as Westside Gallery and Art Connects in New York City, among others. In 2016, one of her pieces received an honorable mention award at the 19th Fiber Biennial exhibit at the Dennos Museum of Art in Traverse City, Michigan. Dougherty currently lives and works in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We hope to see you at the Artist Reception! Mary Bachman Art Committee

RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED STUFF! The Annual City Club Flea Market is just around a few corners (the first weekend in March). The third floor “Fleaettes” are already hard at work pricing your generous donations. BUT, we need more! Please consider bringing in your no longer needed, gently used things. Remember: no furniture, clothing, computers, TV’s or non-working electronics. Also, consider asking your friends and family to donate as well. Be sure to let them know that we are not able to give tax credits for anything donated, as we are a 501c4, not a 501c3. Ways and Means has instituted a new policy this year concerning purchasing items prior to the sale. No one will be permitted to purchase any items before the members’ sale, which begins at noon on Friday, March 3. All donated items will be on the floor on Friday for all to see and buy. We hope to re-institute the silent auction at this year’s Flea Market, so if you have antiques or especially “nice” items that you no longer use, please consider bringing them in. Tour of Saarinen House Departing at 10:00am From the City Club / Returning at 5:00pm The Saarinen House is Eliel Saarinen’s Art Deco masterwork and the jewel of Cranbrook’s architectural treasures. Designed in the late 1920’s and located at the heart of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Saarinen House served as the home and studio of the Finnish-American designer Eliel Saarinen (Cranbrook’s first resident architect and the Academy’s first president and head of the Architectural Department) and Loja Saarinen (the Academy’s first head of the Weaving Department) from 1930-1950. The extraordinary interior, now impeccably restored, features the Saarinens’ original furnishings, including Eliel’s delicately veneered furniture and Loja’s sumptuous textiles, as well as early furniture designs by their son Eero Saarinen. In 2014, the Antiques Roadshow visited the Saarinen House while at their stop in Detroit. This trip will also include a visit to the Cranbrook's Museum of Art where you can view John Glick’s: A Legacy in Clay on exhibition. The exhibition includes early vessels, tableware, to conceptual ceramic sculptures. There will also be an opportunity to view Cranbrook Academy of Art Outdoor Sculpture. Many of the pieces featured are by Swedish Sculpture Carl Milles (1875-1955). Lunch is included and will be at the Village Club in Bloomfield Hills. *Please note that the Sarrinen House is not handicap accessible. $80 for Members / $90 for Non-members Please contact Mary Greulich to make reservations by calling (734) 369-4727 or emailing [email protected].
