President report – August 2015

Wow, what a huge pink day we had!! 4 Arenas, riders & horses everywhere having fun, it gets me so excited Thank you very much to Allissia & Helen for coordinating the day and to everyone involved to make the day the success it was: Our wonderful judges: Wendy Kelly, Sue Mills, Rachel Cairns, Judy Evans, Marion Squire, Helen Greer & Allissia Curry And all our fabulous helpers: Annette Denby, Amanda Young, Lise Hunt, Anja Spek, Julie Inglis, Deb Fulwood, Kim Holland, Louise Allen, Julie Scott, Bridget Brennan, Sharmayne Spencer, Meg Drury, Helen Greer, Catherine Smith, Maree Smith, Kathryn Jones, Rachel Stafford & Margaret Finucane Thank you to the very many other people who lend a hand where they could on the day and in setting up prior. Thank you to the kids for helping to pack up the arenas I’m sure to forget someone but you’re all appreciated – we couldn’t run the days without you! Sun 27 September – Closed Unrestricted competition sponsored by Horseland Tamworth

Sun 25 October – 9.30am to 11.30am – Instruction clinic with Susie Duddy (EA accredited A-level judge). Susie will be taking us through the various dressage levels (prelim to advanced) and explain the various movements and what exactly the judge is looking for. We will be using a variety of guest riders to demonstrate.

Sat 21 & Sun 22 November – Official & Closed Unrestricted competition @ AELEC With a freestyle competition on Saturday night under lights in the indoor arena!! Freestyle classes: novice, elementary, medium, advanced & open (FEI levels available on request)

Sun 22 & Mon 23 November – Judges clinic with 4**** FEI judge Ricky McMillan (see flyer below)

Sat 28 November – Member High Point presentation night @ Southgate Inn 2-course meal: $25 per adult & $10 per child (subsidised by TDC) MC-ed by the gorgeous Tina McTavish RSVP to Allissia Curry on 0499 606 696

Glossary of Dressage Terms to help you understand your marks and

comments

H-I

HALF-HALT A momentary increase of collection, or an effect of the aids, which increases the attention and improves the

balance of the horse.

HASTY Usually refers to the tempo, therefore it is best to specify (as in “hasty tempo”).

HOLLOW BACK Sagging or depressed back caused by slackness of the back and belly muscles (passive) or by sustained

contraction of the back muscles, impeding swing and elasticity (active).

IMPULSION Thrust, releasing of the energy stored by engagement. The energy is transmitted through a back that is free

from negative tension and is manifested in the horse’s elastic, whole-body movement. (Note 1: Impulsion is

associated with a phase of suspension such as exists in trot and canter, but which does not exist in walk or

piaffe. Therefore, impulsion is not applicable to the walk or the piaffe.

J-N

LATERAL 1. To the side, as in flexion, bend, suppleness, or direction of movement. 2. Impurity in walk (ambling or

pacing) or canter; rarely trot.

LONG AND LOW Carriage in which the horse lowers and stretches out its head and neck, reaching forward and downward into

contact on a longer rein.

LONGITUDINAL In the lengthwise dimension (as opposed to lateral), from front-to-back or back-to-front.

LOOSENESS Freedom from, or release from, negative physical and mental tension. Relaxation.

MARCHING Purposefulness in the steps of the walk.

MOVEMENT The manner in which the horse moves over the ground.

2. Test Movement: a section of a dressage test to be evaluated with one score on a score sheet

3. Dressage Movement: an exercise, as opposed to a figure, movements are: leg-yield, reinback, shoulder-in,

travers, renvers, turn on haunches, half pass (trot or canter), flying change(s), pirouette (walk or canter),

piaffe, and passage.
