Advising Philosophy:
The Five Points of Academic Advising
Declaring Area or Major/MinorMSU policy:
• Declare Area/Major by 45 credit hours
• Declare Minor by 60 credit hours
(Second Major MAY substitute for Minor)
• Student CANNOT register if Area or Major or Minor is not declared by these points.
• If you are an Advisor for a Major, be sure your Advisee has declared a Minor.

University Bulletin:• Located on Registrar website• Student MAY move to a newer Bulletin
but cannot move backward • Bulletins expire after 7 years• Every August check for changes in Bulletin• Know “Academic Degrees and Programs”
including University Studies requirements• Know programs within your department• Know pre- and co-requisites, etc.
A student cannot register until his/her Advisor Hold is released.
A student’s Advisor Hold should be released ONLY after student is advised.
To release an Advisor Hold , go to myGate / Teaching Advising / Student Search OR Advisee Listing; click Release Advisor Hold.
Academic Advisor, Chair, and Dean can release Advisor Holds.
