Peace Church Council Meeting Minutes June 11, 2014 6 p.m.

Call Meeting to Order-- Absent Tom P, Terry and Jan.

Devotional Time—Job Chapter 28. Where can wisdom be found and understanding dwell? God is with you even during

the hard times.

Secretary’s Report—Tom G motion to accept as submitted. Jennifer 2nd. MCU

Treasurer’s Report--A check written to HK Food Shelf had not been cashed. They normally send a receipt and nice

thank you. Have contacted them to see if it was located. Will issue another if not located and discuss with bank about stop

payment. Jennifer motion to accept. Tom G 2nd. MCU

Pastor’s Report—Summer is going well. Preparing for baby’s arrival by having substitute ready to step in when needed.

Appreciation was expressed for the 5 year anniversary recognition. Would like to start on a new 5 year plan for growth.

Will add goal development to be put on the future meeting agendas and ask congregation for feedback. Mystery mission

planning going well. Adult volunteers are solid. Four spots left for kids to join. Valley fair trip yesterday was great. 15 kids

went. Proud of the kids for handling themselves well.

Sunday School Report—Joyce presented the report and asked some questions regarding VBS planning. Waiting for Lu-

ther Crest worker to get back to Pastor Matt with more details. Had 30 students enrolled in Sunday School this year with

an average weekly attendance about 15 kids. Problem area was shortage of teachers. Hoping for more teachers to volun-

teer even for a very part time commitment next year. Sunday School has taken in more than they have spent this year once

budgeted differently and the coffee money for 3rd Sunday of the month was designated for Sunday School needs. Dis-

cussed that council had previously discussed coffee money for two summer months was earmarked for Luther Crest, but

we did not designate which months. Agreed for coffee money for 3rd Sunday of June to be for Sunday School and July/

August coffee money for Luther Crest. Sandy K will be able to track those funds as Bob Roe itemizes coffee money sepa-

rately from offering.

Old Business—

Lift Inspection—Still locating who to contact

Blinds—Jan not present. Pastor aware that they have been paid for, but have not yet been installed.

Berheim Scholarship—At the WCA awards night 5 Peace Lutheran Seniors were awarded scholarships in the

amount of $100. Recipients are Daniel Schack, Braeden Long, Dakotah Kashmark, Lauryn McLaughlin and Andy

Thompson. Jennifer will contact Sandy Perry to discuss the drafting of an award letter for kids to send to their

college financial aid office.

New Business—

Fuel Contracting—Tom P. not present for report.

Sound System—Have heard that the volume on the Runestone channel is still not loud. Pastor will explore this

further. It is better than it was before sound system upgrades, but there are some imperfections.

LP Odor—Brought to our attention that congregation members have once again identified gas odor when entering

the building. This was identified and corrected a few years ago as being a problem with the stove needing some

leads to be cleaned. Jim Johnson assisted last time. Nancy will talk to Jim about what was done to correct the

problem before.

Adjourn—Motion by Tom G, 2nd Brenda. MCU.

Closing Prayer—Lord’s Prayer

Jennifer McLaughlin, Secretary

Stewardship of the Good News

Balance. Balance is something one often hears about

in my generation of workers. Shouts from all sides

that the most productive people strike the best bal-

ance between home and work; family and friends;

planning and spontaneity. And that being said, I

think it’s something that I have done a pretty good

job in my life striving for and achieving, which Peace

Lutheran has taken a large role in allowing me to do.

I have figured out the balance between being a faith-

ful pastor and a devoted family man with a wife and

three children, because as I took on the added roles

of Father to both Henry and Isaac, Peace Lutheran

gave me the flexibility to do so. I put in lots of

hours and work very hard, and yet its not at the ex-

pense of my family life, but rather because of the

balance I’ve found, a way to improve my family life.

I don’t say this often enough, but thank you for let-

ting me be the Pastor here at Peace, and letting me

be the father to my kids and husband to my wife. I

know that sounds simple, but I’ve heard enough sto-

ries to know that although on the surface that might

be easy to say, it’s actually quite difficult to achieve.

That being said there is a scary side to balance isn’t

there? Balance in many ways assumes things stay the

same, even if the same is that everything is a bit cha-

otic! But what happens when I move from a father

of three to a father of four? The scale gets tipped,

and everything that was a well-oiled machine for the

last four years becomes

a little less clear. With

the birth of Charlie

Samuel Rose, what hap-

pens to the balance, the

equilibrium of my life

and ministry? The scary

thing is the uncertainty. I don’t know the details of

how it will all work yet, but perhaps the biggest gift

you have given me as a church family is the

knowledge that you will be just as excited and eager

to find out as I am.

In this time of personal transition for me, I thank

you for building me up, and walking along side me in

this journey. Just as many of you have invited me

into both the darkest and most joyful moments of

your life, I now invite you into the joyful time in my

own.

You will likely see Charlie here in Barrett quite often

for the first few months of his life, as I’m planning

on having him with me as much as I can. I don’t

want to miss out on that early time with him, so just

as I have had Chloe, Henry, and Isaac with me for

several days a week for the first 6mo-year of their

lives, I will be doing the same with Charlie. This

doesn’t mean that I’m ANY LESS available and

around for us as a church family, in fact I’m expect-

ing to be in Barrett more hours (as I know I’m less

productive with a child in tow!) This also means I

might be interested/needing adoptive grandparents

every once and a while, who live here in town, for

times I need to make an emergency hospital visit, or

sensitive counseling session. I’m hoping that if

you’re interested in being one of those grandparents,

you don’t hesitate to talk to me!

The Church is a place that I think too often lives in a

constant fear of rocking the boat, change, loss of

balance, and yet I think it’s a position that we as the

church are called to find ourselves in regularly. We

believe in a God who not only created everything

from the chaos of nothing, but also cared enough to

empty Himself of that power in order to come and

live and die amongst us and still loves us enough to

sustain each and every breath we take, being active in

our lives today. God forces us, with the life, death

and resurrection of Jesus Christ to live in a world

that is upside down and in a kingdom which is both

already and not yet. To find balance in that world,

God’s world, is not a one-time thing, but a daily

death and resurrection in the waters of baptism.
