ReturnsDecatur ballers unite! The Gus Macker is back, thanks to pace setter Rodney Walker. The location was just north of previous years, but the games were still dead on. The new locale offered a nice breeze and plenty of shade to beat the heat. Participants and fans agree; it's a welcome return. For more pics, check out espndecatur.com.

It was Ray's Chilli night at the Decatur Park District Summer Park Run on July 16. All ages ran their choice of a 1/2, 1, 3 or 6 mile jaunt. Instead of chilli, runners earned ice cold water and Ray's sweat towels. Touché, hot weather!

Rosetta Stone rocked Fletcher Park on July 11 as part of the Chill on the Hill summer series in Mt Zion. Remixed classic rock-n-roll, good food and cold beer kept the lawn packed into the night.

July 13 marked the 11th Annual Pink Ribbon Ride sponsored by Coziahr Harley-Davidson. Hundreds toured the area to support breast cancer awareness.

July 7 marked the 7th annual Rodney T. Miller Triathlon. Athletes from all over the country come each year to Swim. Run. Bike. Remember. A portion of the proceeds from the race are donated to enhance and aid Decatur/Macon County area children in sports-related programs or activities. Young athletes participated in the youth race on July 6. Over 400 community members volunteered their time during the 2-day event.

Ready to throw down? Better be really, really sure ’cause the competition will be fierce at the first annual D-town Throwdown from CrossFit Enhance.

On September 7 and 8, Enhance’s box (CrossFit speak for gym) will play host to hundreds of athletes (222 registered so far) divided into six-person teams (3 men, 3 women).

Teams will compete in three divisions: Rx (workouts exactly as prescribed), Scaled (backed off as needed to meet ability) and Masters (40 years and up).

CrossFit, for the newbie, is the mega-popular fitness program that combines weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastics and then breaks them down into explosive workouts of the day (WOD). (After only four years, Decatur’s CrossFit Enhance, part of the Decatur Memorial Hospital Health & Wellness Department, now has more than 500 members.)

The program’s popularity, as explosive as its workouts, led Manager Josh Newton to the conclusion that Decatur needed to show its stuff. At press time, 37 teams were already registered, and they’re coming from all over the state, plus surrounding states like Missouri and Indiana.

Workout elements could include pull-ups, rope climbs, slow-and-long or hard-and-fast runs, burpees, box jumps, rowing, jump rope, combatives, any number of weightlifting moves and much, much more.

“We’ll do five workouts over two days. Most contests you’re only getting two workouts,” says

Josh. “The cool thing about CrossFit is you don’t have to be in first place the whole time; you’ve just got to be near the top.”

Three winners will be named for each division, and the surprise prize packages will be “well worth their time,” says Josh.

Perhaps more rewarding is the fact that a portion of the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. “I felt like it was a great cause,” he says. “They honor and empower warriors who have been wounded in battle and combat. That’s a great organization, a class act.”

With organizers expecting up to 275 athletes, and perhaps more than 50 teams, Decatur has a huge opportunity to honor those who serve with competition as fierce as they are.

“The great thing about CrossFit is that you’re held accountable; you can do group classes, and workouts are hard, fast and fun,” says Josh.

Not up for the challenge? Grab spectator tickets, just $5 for both days, available online or at the door.

We (you and I) are going to do something different this month. We’re going to be detectives. Well, maybe at least snitches.

Cast your memory back to late winter/early spring when we had all that snow the Sunday before Easter. What sorts of things can we do when we’re walking in a winter wonderland? The song says we can make a snowman in the meadow, but what if you aren’t the outdoors type? Wasn’t there a part about a fire? Hmm…

So let’s get back to the theme of celebrations. Specifically, a celebration nine months in the making. Our big snow day was March 24. Which means nine months from then is Christmas Eve! It’s August, and by now the mommies-to-be are telling everyone and/or showing.

So we need your help. Let’s find out just how big the baby boom is going to be for Christmas this year. Please contact Thrive at [[email protected]] on or before August 15. Let us know how many parents are going to be celebrating with a due date around Christmas.

E-mail us just the number of pregnancies; we DO NOT want names or any identifying features. And have it to us at [[email protected]] by August 15.

Happy sleuthing!

The Food Dude is not a professional critic. He just really, really likes food.

THE FOOD DUDE10Party with a PieWanna make a kid happy? Give him a pizza crust, some sauce, cheese and toppings, and set him loose. Making your own personal pizza makes everyone happy, as participants at a recent birthday party at Sloan’s Calzones can attest.

Kids can make their own 8-inch pizzas, see how they’re cooked, then eat their creations with a breadstick and soda. Bonus: They’re making the pizzas right there alongside the kitchen, just like the professional tossers do.

Parties can accommodate big or small bunches. They’ll host any kind of party, from birthdays to bar mitzvahs and beyond. Small celebrations (say, under 16) can kick off any time except peak hours (11:30 am to 12:45 pm Monday to Saturday and 6 to 8 pm Fridays and Saturdays). Larger parties could choose Saturday at 11 am or anytime Sunday (when the restaurant is closed to the public).

Either way, taste buds of all ages will be happy, as parents can also add a pie for themselves to split or order off the menu, whatever their pleasure. Organizers are welcome to decorate as they please, with decorations, tablecloths and the like.

Sloan’s, making Decatur diners happy since 2007, offers a full menu of goodness: half or full calzones (this Dude’s personal favorite), pizzas, pastas plus a full plate of starters and sides. Specialty pizzas like the buffalo chicken ranch have recently taken the lead.

Die-hards will be pleased to know the options will soon be expanding, with more sandwiches and more wing flavors joining the already awesome selection. Teriyaki wings, possible family or child size pasta portions, buffalo chicken and a BLT may all be on the table come fall.

Also expanding the palate: toppings others just don’t offer, like sauerkraut and salami. They

like to keep things interesting and consistent around here, all accented with their signature sweet, tangy, tomatoey red sauce. Might I also say the fried pickles kick it up a notch with a spicy breading that keeps us guessing.

And they aren’t just making their diners happy, either. Did you know their drivers get 6.5% of everything they take out? Yeah, me neither, but that’s a cool deal, especially since delivery is currently free to Decatur and much of its surroundings.

Even if you aren’t up for the b’day bunch, hit their web site for coupons for tasty stuff like a free pizza, free stix and more.

Your taste buds will thank you and so will your belly!

Publisher'sPick of the Month

$24.99

Well, I might be crazy, but I think this Doctor Who-themed Yahtzee is AMAZING! Possibly, the coolest publisher's pick so far. It's a BBC 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition, so I'm torn between keeping it in the box or playing it [read: transport through time and space].

This excerpt from the box should say it all. "Roll three Daleks and two Cybermen for the classic combination Full House and the ultimate Doctor Who villian rivalry. If you roll five weeping Angels, you've got the quantum locked high-scoring Yahtzee with a Doctor Who twist!"

If this is just the sort of nerdy fun you're looking for, head out to the shop in Warrensburg for more themed classic games, board games, and collectible card games. Plus you can usually find a game to jump into or watch while you're there!

Arts events and experiences that may qualify for a grant should have the arts as the main focus, promote high artistic standards and demonstrate careful planning. High priority is given to those that serve underserved populations (ex: seniors, disabled, rural communities, low economic groups), enhance cultural diversity or are open to the public, when appropriate.

The DAAC service area includes all of Macon County, as well as the communities of Assumption, Clinton, Moweaqua, Pana and Taylorville. Grants are awarded three times a year: October 1, February 1 and May 1, and projects must start 30 days or more after these deadlines.

If you know a non-profit that has an arts-related project that could benefit from a bit of financial support or if you would like to help support the DAAC grants program, visit www.decaturarts.org/grants or call 423-3189 to learn more.

All over Decatur artists and groups are offering high-quality arts events and creative learning experiences for all ages and interests from theatre, dance and music to painting, photography and ceramics. All of this activity gives people in our community (that includes you) a chance to either participate or simply enjoy the creativity of others.

But sometimes, even when these arts groups are lucky enough to have dedicated volunteers helping out, they may still need a little financial assistance to make the magic happen. That’s where the Decatur Area Arts Council (DAAC) can help.

Because the Arts Council’s mission is “to introduce and promote the arts, enhance arts educational opportunities and increase the impact of and access to the arts to improve the quality of life in the community,” the DAAC offers Community and Education Grants.

Every year, more than $10,000 in grants is given to not-for-profit organizations for art-related programs. Money for the grants is provided through the generosity of Arts Council members and donors (like you), Tate & Lyle and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Some of the recipient groups this year included BabyTALK, for a children’s musician to entertain kids ages 0-5 with songs and activities; Decatur Power Drillers, for a one-day exhibition/competition for drum teams; and Macon Resources, for adult classes to make individually designed ceramic tiles for a mosaic. Other groups that received grants were as diverse as Argenta-Oreana Public Library, Children's Museum of Illinois, Decatur Underground Theatre, First Baptist Church and Maroa-Forsyth Grade School.

Celebrating a New Look

Long Time Coming“The funding process for downtown renovations started close to 10 years ago including numerous grant applications, generous IDOT funding in the form of $1.9 million in 2007, and bonds issued,” says Public Works Director Rick Marley.

While several of the downtown changes have been gradual, most recently local citizens have probably noticed the recent facelift taking shape. New sidewalks, new street lights, new electrical, new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance changes and a newly improved Central Park Stage have both the city, and the Celebration, excited for the 2013 event.

The Central Park Stage changes are so new, in fact, that Celebration-goers will be the first ones to lay foot on the freshly laid sod, which now surrounds the area previously covered in concrete.

Rick is proud of the “great working relationship” the city has established with the Decatur Celebration team. Many of the infrastructure changes were made with the event’s needs taken into consideration.

It wouldn’t be summertime in Soy City without the Decatur Celebration. Known for its stellar lineup of live music, eclectic entertainment, food vendors and the Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade, it’s the biggest Decatur party of the year, and you are all invited. Aside from the usual crowd favorites, this year guests will experience the newest Downtown Decatur renovations and find that the new look is much more than just a new coat of paint.

“We look forward to seeing them put the new renovations to use,” he says.

For all of the effort, Rick’s own reward is seeing people enjoy the improvements.

“It’s been an exciting project to be a part of,” says Rick. “It’s rewarding for me to see the improvements being made and to see the full force effort come together.”

New LookThe downtown renovations have definitely shaken things up a bit but in a good way. For the Decatur Celebration, the renovations have called for some moving and reorganizing, which Producer/Director Lori Sturgill, has embraced with open arms.

“The streetscape projects and recent improvements allow us to deliver a better product,” she says. “It’s a challenge, but as we make changes to work with the festival, we are keeping a new spin on the event.”

The 70+ food vendors are the most impacted by the improvements. Many have “legacy” vendor space and

due to lost street space, some will be relocated across the street from their previous location.

“It’s a change, but our vendors have all been flexible and have made adjustments to grow with the event,” Lori says.

Another big change is that now people will be standing in grass at the Central Park Stage, which Lori believes will be a more comfortable setting.

Her ultimate vision for the renovated Central Park Stage area?

“I would love to see families relaxing on the grass in the new area, really utilizing the space as a gathering place for family fun and entertainment. That would be the vision fulfilled,” she says.

The Decatur Celebration team is more than pleased with the new downtown look.

“The work is beautiful,” says Lori. “Part of the Decatur Celebration is our way of showing off Decatur at our best—and the improvements definitely play a big role in that.”

Things You Can’t MissAs you stroll through beautified downtown Decatur, Lori encourages Celebration-goers to check out some of the newest additions such as a 3-D chalk artist, a Hawaiian fire dancer and a duets karaoke competition.

And did we mention that Café Brio will be serving the Celebration’s first ever margarita offering? Yeah, we’ll see you in line.

As with every other year of the Decatur Celebration, “the most exciting family street festival in the Midwest,” take advantage of the opportunity for a fun, festival atmosphere that you can experience at home with the whole family.

If you’ve ever

planned a child’s

birthday party or

you've most likely

of us agonize over

With the school year quickly approaching, we figured moms and dads alike could use some guidance in finding an affordable location for celebrating their child’s special day. We’ve done the research on a ton of amazing, creative opportunities in the Decatur area that make birthday party planning a snap! Here's a snapshot of just a few:

On Safari Party at Scovill Zoo - Staff with the Decatur Park District has taken all the guesswork out of planning this party for the animal lover in your life who is 16 years old or younger. Scovill Zoo offers party packages that include rental for the outdoor deck or Education Center and up to 20 zoo admissions, train tickets and carousel tokens. Packages range from $60-$120 with an a la carte menu for add-ons such as an animal presentation ($30), safari snack sack ($4/person) and gift shop grab bags ($1 and $3). For more information go to www.decatur-parks.org/scovill-zoo/.

Sports Party at the DISC - How do you keep those high-energy kids busy for the duration of a birthday party? Take 'em to the DISC!! Birthday Party Packages can be paired together or purchased separately. Rental for the party room is $22 and allows the party planners to bring their own decorations and food/beverage. Activities range between $33 for the batting cage and $95 for the inflatable bounce house and slide. One of the DISC's most popular party packages is the rock climbing wall ($79), which is recommended for ages 5 and older and can accommodate up to 10 party-goers. For more information go to www.decatur-parks.org, or call 217-429-3472.

Interactive Party at the Children's Museum of Illinois - Geared for younger children, the Children's Museum allows up to 1 hour in the party room for cake, ice cream and gifts plus an additional hour of museum exploration time. Party packages are $75 for members and

Bowling Party at Spare Time Lanes - Offering 3 different party packages, Spare Time Lanes boasts, "You bring the cake; we'll do the rest." We do believe they mean it! Spare Time's "Perfect Game" package at $200 includes 1 hour of bowling for up to 10 people, ten $10 video game cards, 2 one-topping pizzas, 2 pitchers of soda, 10 ice cream cones, 10 gift bags, table service and 20 invitations! What else could you possibly need to celebrate? Smaller party packages are also available. See www.sparetimelanes.net for more details, or call 875-3141 to book your party today.

Nature Adventure Party at Rock Springs Nature Center - Want an all-inclusive party option? Rock Springs Nature Center may be just what you've been looking for! Each party includes up to two hours in a private room, set-up/tear-down, goody bags, pink lemonade and cupcakes for each child, an age-appropriate presentation on the theme of your choice and plenty of time to explore the Nature Center's exciting exhibits. Pricing varies by head count: $90 for up to 12 guests, $120 for 12-18 guests and $140 for 19-24 guests. Talk about one-stop shopping! Call 217-423-7708 to schedule your child's party, or visit www.maconcountyconservation.org.

Arty Party at Madden Arts Center - This is the perfect party solution for the creative, artistic child in all of us. From pre-school kids to adults, the Madden Arts Center is the place to have a party if you love art! Arty Party packages range from $125-$175 for up to 15 children and include one hour of art instruction from a teacher and an hour for games, cake and gift opening. This team of party planners has worked out all the details down to the available party themes. For more information visit www.decaturarts.org, or to schedule your Arty Party, call 423-3189.

Swim Party at the YMCA – Let your water bug and her friends splish splash for a couple hours (1 hour in the pool, 1 hour in the party room) with a swimming party at the Decatur Family YMCA. Twenty-five guests are included, and the cost is $120 for Y members and $145 for prospective members. Party times are Saturday or Sunday afternoon from 1-3 pm or 2-4 pm. Bring refreshments and favors, decorate, open gifts and generally celebrate it up! Y staff will set up the party room, and lifeguards are always available during the swim time. The Y asks that there are five adult chaperones in the water during a pool time. For more information or to schedule a party, visit www.decaturymca.org or call 872-9622.

While not an exhaustive list of birthday party locations in the Decatur area, these organizations certainly provide a good variety of party ideas for children of all ages and interests. Don’t take our word for it! Go ask a kid who’s had a party at one of these great facilities.
