Hill Country Animal League History

HCAL’s meager beginnings started with a neighborhood group who had a love of garage sales and a concern about feral cat colonies. They decided to establish a rummage store while at the same time wanting to do something about the overpopulation of feral cats in the area. They started with participating in the TNR program and then started a clinic of their own.

Hill Country Animal League has come a long way since 1986! Now we have an affordable spay/neuter clinic and a thrift store that supports the clinic’s mission. The number of surgeries climbs each year. Last year we performed over 5,000 surgeries! We hope to go above and beyond those numbers this year, expand our clinic, and promote educational measures about over population, how to be responsible pet owners, wellness programs for pets, adoption partnerships with City / County shelters and Rescue Groups and much more!

In an effort to find homeless pets a family forever, ASPCA promotes an annual Mega Adopt-A-Thon Adopt A Shelter Pet Program. This year, Hill Country Animal League has been approved by ASPCA to begin our annual event with marketing support through ASPCA.

In collaboration with the ASPCA, City of Boerne, Kendall County and local dog and cat rescue services, Hill Country Animal League and the City of Boerne will be hosting “Animal Unity in our Community” adoption event with a sponsorship through ASPCA.

This year’s “Animal Unity in our Community” Adoption Event will be held Saturday, October 1, 2013

from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at Boerne Town Square.

The City of Boerne Animal Shelter and Kendall County Animal Shelter will be present with many dogs available for immediate adoption.

As of this Newsletter, many of our rescue organizations have also pledged to be present with the dogs and cats that they have available for immediate adoption as well.

All adoption fees will vary and will start at $25.00 per animal.

We will have many fun things to do at our adoption event such as an all day Chili Cook Off with cash prizes! Dress Up Your Mutt and Strut

parade at Noon for those that bring their pets (in costume or not!) and another parade at 4:00 for all of those newly adopted family mem-bers!

ASPCA has also tasked us with issuing engraved tags and taking photographs of new adoptions and posting them on Facebook and Twitter!

This will be a fun and highly publi-cized social event! See our de-tailed ad on page 5 of this Newslet-ter.

Come on out and join us for a day of Animal Unity In Our Community and have fun with your old four legged friend or find a new one!

The City of Boerne Animal Shelter and Control Facility houses animals from the City of Boerne , as well as, animals from the City of Fair Oaks Ranch.

Primary guests are dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. The shelter even has the occasional “exotic” guest too! Chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, owls, bearded dragons, exotic birds and even a fifty year old tortoise have all come through the Boerne Animal Shelter.

Most of the animals at the shelter are found as strays, which have to be held for a minimum of three (3) business days.

If they are not claimed by their owners they are then put up for adoption provided they are not too sick, injured or aggressive. Some pets are turned over by their owners who can no longer car e for them. Occasionally the shelter even has pets that have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect.

Whatever the reason for them being at the shelter, these pets share one thing in common,

... they all need to find new, loving homes!

Founded in 1866, the ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” While there are SPCAs and humane societies all over the country, the ASPCA is not directly affiliated with them. However, the ASPCA works nationally to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with many shelters across the country.

Today, the ASPCA is the nation’s second-largest animal welfare grant maker, providing support to U.S.-based nonprofit animal welfare organizations through cash grants, sponsorships, executive and technical assistance, and training. In 2012, the ASPCA gave over $17 million in 1,665 grants to nearly 1,040 animal shelters, municipal and governmental agencies, rescue groups, sanctuaries, and other animal welfare or-ganizations.

Through support from the ASPCA, the Hill Country Animal League is able to spearhead the Unity In Our Community Event in October. This even brings together our spay/neuter clinic and rescue organization with local City and County Agencies and the community at large.

We are thankful for ASPCA continued support of our efforts to decrease over population.

Although Hill Country Animal League promotes the spay and neuter of all pets, fostering and adopting ani-mals is not something that is within our means. During the spring “cat season”, we do house and find homes for some of the stray kittens, we leave the fostering and adoption process to those rescues that are “Friends of HCAL” and very proficient in animal rescue, rehabilitation and placement. A larger list of res-cues can be found on our website under the ADOPTION tab and they would love to hear from you and help you find you a new friend!

TNR—Trap, Neuter, Return Program

Ever heard of TNR or Trap, Neuter, Return? This is a selfless program that many of our local residents take part in to help prevent unwanted kittens in our area. Several local area residents have taken on the challenge of setting out live animal traps in highly populated areas of feral cats which include WalMart, HEB, Home Depot and other similar locations around Boerne and surrounding areas. Once a feral cat has been trapped, the animal is brought to HCAL the next day for spay or neuter surgery. Our highly trained technicians are familiar with handling these feral cats and sometimes we provide surgery and ra-bies shots on 40 or more cats in a single day—along with our scheduled appointments for that day! These cats are then picked up by the resident that has trapped them and the cats are returned to the same location they were trapped. These cats can now live a full life of catching rodents and fending for themselves without producing MANY more kittens! Our hats are off to the wonderful service that each of our TNR members provides our local community! Without the TNR individuals and groups, Boerne and the surrounding areas would have been overwhelmed with kittens in a very short period of time! If you see a cat missing the tip of one ear, this cat was part of the TNR program!
