LOOKIN’ FOR A BLESSING!

“Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best.” – Colossians 3:22 (MSG)

I’ve been taught all my life that if you want your work to be blessed by God, you need to exceed what is expected of you. As kids—even ‘town kids,’ my four siblings and I all had chores to do. That’s the way my folks were raised and that’s what was expected of us. But, as it turns out, it wasn’t just an empty request of parents who wanted to hold parental power over their kids. They were actually trying to teach us something. And it’s biblical (coming from God’s word)…

As one of my long-time mentors, Rick Warren used to say, “No matter what you do, whether you’re a truck driver, an attorney, a cook, or a teacher, do more than the minimum. Don’t just get by.” In other words, God wants us to go beyond the normal—surpass what’s required of us. In Paul’s letter to the Colossians (see verse above), he tells us to exceed the expectations of our bosses … and to exceed the expectations of our customers (as we really work for both). That is the kind of work God blesses!

Unfortunately, we live in a culture of mediocrity. I can’t tell

you how many times I’ve complained about having to stand in line way too long to check out, only to experience poorly trained personnel who’s math skills don’t seem to be up to the task. Or, how about that product only made to last seven years … and then it’s obsolete? Whatever happened to quality workmanship? I know that Americans used to take pride in their work, but all too often today, it’s become about just getting by—just enough to make a buck. So many people just put in their time, doing the minimum that’s required, cutting corners, and making do on as little effort as possible. ‘Sound familiar?

Well, that’s the bad news. The GOOD NEWS is this: It

makes it very easy for you to stand out at work. Any time you take pride in your work and decide to do more than expected, you’ll rise to the top. It’s really all about our attitude. Are we doing this ‘as if unto Christ?’ which brings me to this…

Another reason we should exceed in our work is this: We

represent Jesus Christ. We are ambassadors for Christ. And Jesus himself said, “If someone demands that you go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5:41). Do you want God’s blessing in your life? In your church? If you do, we need to exceed what’s expected of us, doing everything we do ‘as if unto Christ.’ Then, when that’s our attitude toward everything we’re a part of—including the work in our church, we can watch God bless it. Adult Fellowship

Adult Fellowship is an organization within our church that has been meeting for approximately 60 years. Our evening begins with a potluck meal followed by a variety of programs. We listen to travelogues, have hymn sings, game nights and picnics in the park. We’ve had wood carving and stained glass demonstrations and some nights we just “fellowship” with one another. We meet on the second Thursday of the month April through October. In November we traditionally have a turkey dinner. The majority of our meetings are in Fellowship Hall, but we occasionally meet at the home of one of our members. We have an interesting mix of people and always welcome any adults that would be interested in joining us. August 8 we will be meeting at the home of Jeanne Kapotas at 6:00 p.m. If you have any questions see Charlie and Louise Price or Ron and Bobbi Butteris.

WORSHIP & PICNIC AT CENTENNIAL PARK On August 18th at 10:45 we will hold our annual Worship &

Picnic in the Park at the shelter closest to the pool at Centennial Park. There will be NO early service that day.

Please bring a dish to pass as drinks and place settings will be provided.

return at the early service on Sunday, September 8th. We will have our first rehearsal of the season on Wednesday, September 4th at 7:00 PM. Blake was so tired one night in the middle of the mission trip that he fell asleep at the table during supper! When he got home he was sick for a week, became dehydrated and had to spend time in the Emergency Room.

Now that he's recovered, his pastor asked him, "If you had

known ahead of time that you were going to get so sick, would you have gone anyway?" Blake quickly responded, "Of course! Those people have to live like that all the time. We only had to do it for one week. And, we were able to build some things to help make their lives a little better."

God gives us time, talents and treasures to use for God's glory. They are not gifts given to us to store in bigger barns for ourselves. They are like seeds, given to us to plant in good, rich soil so that they can bear the fruit of God's love for us to share with the world.

We often feel the temptation to use all the blessings that come

to our own lives for our own benefit. Our Christian faith, however, invites us to live in community. Jesus calls us to TITHE, SHARE, and SACRIFICE from all our blessings.

Adult Fellowship

Membership, Confirmation, Spiritual Enrichment Class

Offered Fall 2013

Essential Transformation (E.T. for short) is a 13-week class

for those desiring to explore the basics of the Christian faith and is open to everyone—including long-time members! This class is a prerequisite for any sophomore (or up) who desires to confirm their baptismal vows or for those considering membership at Dodgeville UMC. The only thing we ask is that those interested are currently active in the church (i.e. regular weekly worship, youth group, etc.)—that they’ve shown evidence of or interest in being an active part of our local congregation and its ministries.

We will be having an informational meeting on Wednesday,

August 14, at 6:30 PM in the library at Dodgeville UMC. (High schoolers must bring their parents with them to the informational meeting!) Regular 90-minute classes will start in September and end in December. (Actual day and time of class will be determined in August, with full schedule available shortly after. Also nursery care is possible by prior arrangement.)

For all who have sensed the Bible or Bible study to be

intimidating, this is the class for you! We start at the beginning: We start with how to get around in the Bible itself. Then we move to basic beliefs of our faith - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and how God works in and through our lives in special ways. Along with that, we hope to answer your questions about things like "Why the church?"

The Adult Fellowship group met Thursday, July 11 at Shelter #1, Centennial park, Dodgeville.

18 members and friends of the Dodgeville United Methodist

Church attended. Present were Charles and Louise Price, Ron and Bobbie Butteris, Ivy Wilson, Klint and Wanda McCutchen, Richard and Mary James, Charlene Mingst, Charlene Bennett, Cathryn Tredinnick, Jean Leigh, Rosemary Edwards, Jeannie Kopatos, Marilyn Liddell, Anna Lynch, Gayle Stewart

There was no formal program. After a blessing led by Ron Butteris a pot luck dinner was enjoyed.

Donations of $21,.00 were received. The next meeting will be a pot dinner on Thursday, August 8 at

Jeannie Kapotas home, 3451 Veterans Parkway, in the Military Ridge subdivision, Dodgeville.
