Here are a few of the cats that are ready for homing

JakeJake is a 6 year old tabby boy. He is adorable and enjoys playing as well as being very friendly. He loves having a fuss. He has no teeth but still manages to crunch dreamies and biscuits. He gets on with cats and children but he would prefer to be “Top Cat”. Jake is ready to be homed

Pip as in ‘Pipsqueak’ because she squeaks instead of miaows, is a black and white female approximately 12 months old. She doesn’t like to be held for long but lie down and tap the floor and she will lie next to you and want her tummy stroked. Best suited to a home with no other pets and no young or boisterous children. Pip enjoys quiet and relaxation.

Albert and Victoria are Jasmine’s kittens. They had no human contact for the first 5 weeks of their life so they are very nervous of people. They really do need to be homed together as they would be very scared if on their own, they cuddle up together when they are worried and play together. They would also probably be better if there were no other cats or dogs in the house.

Victoria is getting much braver and does not run off and hide now when her fosterer goes in the pen and has started to purr when she is stroked Albert however is not so trusting and does sometimes run and hide. They are going to need a lot of time and patience when they are re-homed as they have never been in a house so all noises such as washing machines and hoovers will scare them.

Both Kittens use a litter tray and eat wet and dry food.

Jasmine is about 6 months old and was found in a car park in Tamworth so we have no details on her previous life. She was very nervous when she came into the branch, but she now trusts her fosterer enough to allow herself to be picked up and she loves having her tummy rubbed. She does run and hide if anyone else goes in the pen, but is getting better. She uses her litter tray and is not a fussy eater. Jasmine is now ready for homing and is looking for her new family.

Jasmine

Albert & Victoria

Offside is Murdoch’s brother and is black and white. He likes to be cuddled and held when he is tired. He enjoys playing and being fussed and is a lovely boy.

Murdoch is one of Pipsqueak’s

kittens. He is very playful and

won’t sit still for long but pick

him up and he likes a hug and

a kiss.

He is neutered and fully vaccinated.

Riley

O’Malley is a ginger boy, approximately 4 years old. He is shy to start with but sociable and friendly. “Wigwam is a beautiful friendly black and white female cat aged approximately 6 years old who has had a tough 6 months before coming into Lichfield and Tamworth Cats Protection care. We believe due to stress and inactivity, Wigwam was over grooming and had lost all the fur from the back end of her body and some muscle waste in her back legs. She was also very shy and nervous of new people, quick movements and loud noises. After lots of TLC and a course of tablets we are pleased to say that Wigwam has improved greatly. Most of her fur has now returned to normal, with just a little still growing back. Now Wigwam is moving around a lot, the muscles in her back legs are returning to normal too and she is becoming more outgoing as each day passes. Wigwam will never be the most confident of cats and because of this we would like to home her in a quiet place with no other animals or children. She would be best as an indoor house cat because if she becomes spooked by someone or something, she tends to run very quickly and hide and this could be dangerous for her if she were outside. It is important for Wigwam to have daily interaction but in a peaceful environment, she is very friendly when she has got used to you and if you are gentle with her you will get a lot of affection back. Wigwam loves to be combed and have an occasional play with her toys but mostly she is happy either having a fuss, snuggling in her bed or watching the birds through the window. Wigwam is fully vaccinated and micro chipped and ready to go to her new home. If you are a patient person looking to give a loving and friendly cat a permanent home, Wigwam would be delighted to come and live with you! “

Advice taken from International Cat Care (Formerly Feline Advice Bureau)

How to Introduce a new cat or kitten to a resident dog

Traditionally we think of dogs and cats as enemies. However, while they may be wary of each other initially as unknown entities, they can and often get on very well. There is no direct competition and so cat and dog may get on a great deal better than cat and cat. Success in introductions will need consideration of several aspects – the dog’s breed, age and your control of it. Very close relationships between dogs and cats are usually a result of good early experience and socialisation for both species, but it can be achieved with careful and patient introductions.

If the dog or cat has lived with the other species before this will help the process as they will probably be much less stressed simply by the presence of another creature. If the dog has lived with a cat before it may initially show interest in a new individual but will probably soon settle back into doing what the cat tells it as it did before!

If you are unsure how your dog will react then you need to take care. If you have a terrier or chasing breed such as a greyhound then it may be much more driven by its instincts to chase than some other breeds.

● Introduce the dog with the cat in a kittening pen or dog pen then this will make sure that no chase ensues no matter what.

● Place a box or make a covered crate within the

cage so the cat can hide if necessary. Position the cage in an area away from the dog’s bed and feeding place.

● Tire the dog out by giving it a long walk so that it is not so excitable when it comes to meeting the cat.

● Stroke both animals and exchange scents so that they are at least familiar with each other’s smell and it also becomes a component of the household smell – that of their den.

● Let the dog sniff the cat through the cage. The

cat may hiss and growl but it is safe. The dog may also be wary of this display and feel happy that the cat is inside!

● Reward the dog for quiet interaction and the

behaviour you want. ● Bring the cage into the sitting room in the evening

and all sit quietly watching the television so that no great interest is taken in either animal and it all feels very relaxed and normal.

● The first time they meet outside the cage make

sure the dog is on a lead and cannot follow if the cat runs away.

● Make sure the cat has lots of high places to

escape to – shelves, window sills etc. ● Ensure that the cat can access litter facilities,

outdoors, food, water and resting places without having to pass the dog directly, until such time as they are relaxed in each other’s company.

● Never leave the dog and cat alone together until

you are happy that they are safe together

A tiny three week old kitten survived a 1,000 mile trip inside the engine of a car. Two days later, the kitten was found and an animal rescue group and a tow truck company worked together to get him out safely.

The car owner called Julia Di Sieno, the founder of Animal Rescue Team, Inc and said that she believed there was a stray cat trapped somewhere inside her car. Later, she was advised to contact the police department and ask them to call animal control.

Julia said: “Animal control was dispatched, an officer showed up, and he thought perhaps the kitten was no longer in the compartment.”

But she got another phone call from the car owner later that afternoon, saying she could still hear the cat. “I had to go do something,” she said.

It took them a while and a lot of team work to locate the kitten. They got help from a tow truck company

so that they could lift up the car to look underneath. Eventually they found the kitten lodged in the silver Honda Fit’s engine compartment.

“I was concerned about this kitten because it had been in the car engine for two or three days. I put on latex gloves, and I managed to get my hands in there until I had a little kitten and wiggled it through.”

“He is very tame now, purring, and finally eating. We’ve been treating him with antibiotics.”

“The moment I pulled him up, it was so exhilarating,” she said. They named the kitty Love after the owner of the tow truck company for volunteering to help in the rescue.

The kitten was dehydrated and had an eye infection but is expected to make a full recovery.

True StoryThe Love of a Man for his Cat

A man kept his beloved cat with him and swam in the rising flood waters to make sure his cat made it to safety as the torrential floods hit western Canada.

Kevan Yaets and his cat Momo were stranded in their pickup truck and had to swim to safety before the vehicle became submerged in flood waters.

Kevan climbed out the back window of his truck with his cat Momo tightly held in his arms while his car was slowly sinking in the flood waters and being swept downstream.

They started swimming to safety. Momo, followed by Kevan, made their way to the higher ground. Kevan closely swam behind Momo to make sure his cat was ok.

Their truck was completely submerged, but Kevan is happy that he and his cat Momo are safe.

Kevan crawls out the window of his truck with his cat tightly held in his arms while his truck is sinking in flood waters.

Now that’s what I call “a Happy Ending”

“Just thought you might like an update on Jeffrey. I picked Jeffrey up from the cattery on Monday 10th June, and took him to his new home. He has settled in very well here, eating and drinking quite well too. He has lots of new toys and a new bed, which he sleeps on during the day, then he comes and snuggles up to me at night, on my bed. Jeffrey enjoys his daily grooming first thing in the morning, and loves his huge great big cuddles. Included some new pictures of him, and will send regular updates and photos, so you can see how he’s doing!

Kindest regardsTracy, Gary & Jeffrey xx”

Lulu was one of our adorable kittens looking for a new loving home and along came Yolanda.

She fell in love with Lulu and offered her a home immediately.

“Lulu has adapted well & loves her room, especially the basket!!” says Yolanda.

As you can see Lulu is exploring her new garden. She loves the flowers and is quite in awe of the very large tree. “hmm” she thinks, “I wonder if I can climb that when I am a bit bigger”.........I bet she can.

Tink is one of our older cats and she came into branch care with her friend Little Mo. She was with us a while when Karen, Ethan and Joseph came to visit her and decided she was just the cat for them. This is what they have to say:

“To everyone at Cats Protection, Lichfield

I just wanted to let you know that Tink has settled really well into our family, it seems she has been here for months rather than weeks. My initial concern was that being a mature lady of 7 years, she might feel unsettled around my 12 and 8 year old sons, but I had absolutely nothing to worry about. She has really taken to them, particularly my eldest son, and chooses to alternate between their bedrooms each night to go to sleep. She loves being fussed and having her tummy tickled, and is so playful - you’d never guess she is as old as she is! Her favourite ‘toy’ is a simple piece of string, and her eyes light up if she sees you pick it up. I can’t believe that we initially dismissed her when we saw her on the website, as my youngest son was so set on having a tabby. Luckily, he agreed to come to see her and immediately fell in love with her - as we all have.

Karen, Ethan and Joseph”

Paws for Thought

Cats!There’s a danger you know.

You can’t own just one, for the craving will grow. There’s no doubt they’re addictive, wherein lies the danger

While living with lots, you’ll grow poorer and stranger.

One cat is not trouble, and two are so funny,The third one is easy, the fourth one’s a honeyThe fifth is delightful, the sixth ones a breeze.

You find you can live with a house full, with ease.

So how ‘bout another? Would you really dare? They’re really quite easy, but Oh Lord, the hair!

With cats on the sofa and cats on the bed,And crates in the kitchen, its no bother, you said.

They’re really no trouble, their manners are great. What’s just one more cat and one more little crate?

The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty. The floor is all footprints, the furniture’s dusty.

The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?Who minds a few nose prints and a little more hair?

So let’s keep a kitten, you can always find room. And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.

There’s hardly a limit to the cats you can addthe thought of a cutback, sure makes you feel sad.

Each one is special, so useful, so funny,The food bill grows larger, you owe the vet money.

Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay,Except other cat folks, who live the same way.

Your lawn has now died and your shrubs are dead, too.Your weekends are busy, you’re off with your crew.

There’s cat food and vitamins, grooming and shotsAnd entries and travel and motels, which cost lots.Is it worth it you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?

Then that favourite comes up and climbs in your lap.

His look says you’re special and you know that you willKeep all of the kittens in spite of the bill.

Some just for showing and some just to breedAnd some just for loving, they all fill a need.

Late evening is awful, you scream and you shoutAt the cats on the sofa, who refuse to get up.

The cats and the cat shows, the travel, the thrillsThe work and the worry, the pressure, the bills.

The Whole thing seems worth it, the cats are your life. They’re charming and funny and offset the strife.

Your lifestyle has changed, things just won’t be the same.Yes, those cats are addictive and so is the cat game!

Women and cats to as they please,

Alan Holbrook

Cats are smarter than dogs.

You can’t get eight cats to pull a sled

through snow.

Jeff Valdez

The cat could very well be

man’s best friend, but would never

stoop to admitting it.

Unknown

What cats most appreciate in a human being is not the ability to produce food

which they take for granted but for his or her entertainment value

Geoffrey Household “Rogue Male”

Of all God’s creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would

deteriorate the cat.

Mark Twain, Notebook

It was soon noticed that

whenever there was work to be

done the cat could never be

found.

George Orwell“Animal Farm”

I would never wound a cat’s

feelings, no matter how downright

aggressive I might be to humans..

A.L. Rowse“Three Cornish

Cats”

It’s hard to believe, but some people claim their cats

are almost human - and they mean it as a compliment!

Cats are a mysterious kind of folk. There is more

passing in their minds than we are

aware of.

Sir Walter Scott

If a dog jumps into your lap it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat does the same

thing it is because your lap is warmer.

A. N. Whitehead (1861-1947)English philosopher and mathematician

....with the cat you stand on much the same footing that you stand with a fine and dignified friend; if you forfeit his respect and confidence the relationship suffers. The cat, it is well to remember, remains the friend of

man because it pleases him to do soand not because he must.

Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964)Amercian Writer

What’s On

A Kitten Complains!Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble, how those geese and ganders squabble!

Cluck, cluck, quack, quack, quack, ducks and chickens answer back.Woof, woof, bark, bark, bark, puppies romp around and lark.

Moo go the cows, and bull goes moo, oh what a hull-a-ba, hull-aba-loo.The horse cries neigh and the sheep goes baa-a-a,

squeak goes the trailer on the farmers car.the piglets are squealing, grunt, grunt goes the sow.

“miaow,” wails black pussy, “miaow,” what a row, there’s such a commotion, how can a cat sleep?

With the noise of the dogs and the cows and the sheepand the hens and the ducks and the ganders and geese. And the squeak of the trailer that’s needing some grease,

with the moo of the bull and the neigh of the horseand the shrieking of the piglets to make matters worse.

But - it’s no use complaining, for nobody hears,so I’ll hide in the loft and stuff hay in my ears.

Up there, warm and cosy in my coat of fur,I’ll practise my solo, “miaow, purr, purr, purr.”
