ized into one of three screen layouts that mix traditional vehicle data, such as readouts for fuel level and speed, with navigation, phone and entertainment information. The instrument cluster also features a 3-D animated car with performance data callouts.

Powertrain

The XTS features a 3.6L V-6 direct injection engine (RPO LFX) that generates 304 horsepower (226 kW) @ 6,800 rpm and 264 lb-ft (358 Nm) of torque @ 5,200 rpm.

The engine is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6T70 or 6T75 six speed automatic transmission, depending on build content (RPOs M7U, M7W, MV7). The XTS has an available smart Haldex all-wheel drive system, with an electronic limited-slip differential that splits torque between the rear wheels.

Transmission shift paddles are mounted on the steering wheel and have fulltime functionality, so the driver can tap-up or tap-down directly from the steering wheel paddles. The new tap-cancel feature returns the transmission to the automatic mode when the right paddle is pulled and held for 2 seconds.

Chassis

The XTS comes standard with Brembo front brake calipers that have an Auto Dry brake feature and 13.58-inch (345 mm) brake rotors. The rear rotors are 12.40 inches (315 mm). All disc brake rotors use the Ferritic Nitro-carburizing (FNC) process to reduce corrosion.

The XTS is the only luxury sedan with standard Magnetic Ride Control. The electronically-controlled front and rear shocks are filled with a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles. Under the presence of a magnetic charge, the iron particles align to change shock absorber damping in as little as five milliseconds.

In addition the XTS features the advanced GM high performance HiPer Strut front suspension design. It features dual-path top mountings that separate the transfer of spring and damper loads to the body structure.

The rear suspension uses a linked H-arm design and air suspen-sion to provide Automatic Level Control (ALC). The air springs are mounted in the same location where coil springs normally would be mounted.

Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS 2)

The XTS uses GM’s Global A electrical architecture, which is common with the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac SRX, and other recently introduced models. This architecture requires the use of the Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS 2) software and the Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) module.

R-1234yf Refrigerant

A new A/C refrigerant is being introduced in the XTS. R-1234yf is a new environmentally friendly refrigerant that has a 99.7% lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-134a. It requires new service procedures and tools. For more information, refer to the accompanying article on R-1234yf refrigerant.

Unique Vehicle Characteristics

Door Lock – The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter has a stan-dard key inside of the remote fob that can be accessed by pushing on the fob release button. This key can unlock the driver’s door

CUE features include:

LCD Touch Screen – The heart of CUE’s center stack display is the vivid eight-inch (203 mm) LCD touch screen. The cen-ter stack has only seven buttons, four of them for the radio.

Proximity Sensing – As the user’s hand ap-proaches the screen, icons appear and carry out commands. Icons can be customized and arranged by the user.

Haptic Feedback – Buttons on the faceplate and screen pulse when pressed to confirm that the command is being carried out.

Capacitive Multi-Touch Interface – Interactive gestures (such as tap, flick, swipe and spread) make it easy to scroll through lists, enlarge maps or search for favorites, just as with a tablet or smartphone. With a simple swipe of a hand, turn-by-turn navigation and audio information can be moved from the center display to the instrument cluster.

Natural Language Speech Recognition – Users speak as they would in a normal conversation and not with awkward commands and sequences.

Software Updates – CUE software can be upgraded during the life of the vehicle, so the infotainment system never becomes outdated.

Reconfigurable 12.3-inch LCD Instrument Cluster – Available on select models, the instrument cluster can be custom-

only after first remov-ing the cover that conceals the lock cylinder located on the end of the door handle. To access the key cylinder, pull the door handle and insert the key into the slot on the bottom of the cap to pry it out-ward; then move the cap rearward.

Capless Fueling System – The capless fueling system helps keep hands free of dirt and fuel and avoid an illuminated Check En-gine Light due to a loose gas cap. When the fuel nozzle is inserted into the opening, it pushes aside two doors, each locking fuel in with a rubber seal around its edge.

TIP: If the vehicle is refueled with a portable gas can, the funnel in the rear trunk compartment must be used.

Acoustic Glass – The XTS is equipped with acoustic glass in the front windshield and the front driver and passenger doors. Acous-tic windshields are made with a thin, sound absorbing technology that reduces the interior noise by 3dB overall, and even more in the frequency where people hear the human voice. This technology allows using thinner, lighter glass without sacrificing cabin comfort.

TIP: Do not hang key lock boxes on the acoustic glass.

Safety Features

The XTS introduces a network of cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors to help the driver avoid crashes by improving their vision and awareness of road hazards, even braking automatically if sensors predict the vehicle is at risk of crashing. Available safety features include:

Safety Alert Seat – The standard industry-first Safety Alert Seat feature pulses either the left or right side of the driver’s seat cushion to warn the driver of an impending concern, with sufficient warning time to give the driver time to react and make changes. XTS also offers a 360° network of cameras and sensors to enhance driver vision.

Automatic Collision Preparation – When the vehicle sensors determine a collision is imminent, braking is applied to lessen the impact severity with the vehicle detected ahead or even enable the driver to avoid the incident.

Forward Collision Alert – Radar and camera technology detect a possible front end collision threat and alert the driver. The alerting time can be set to far, medium or near settings.

Front and Rear Automatic Braking – Using radar and ultrasonic sensors, this feature can help prevent or mitigate front and rear collisions at low speeds using a progression of alerts that extend to complete braking if necessary.

Lane Departure Warning – The camera-based lane detec-tion system identifies traffic lane markings and warns the driver of unsignaled lane changes. If a turn signal is not used, it will send a warning by providing audible alerts or by activating the Safety Alert Seat. The system activates at speeds above 35 mph (56 km/h).

Rear Cross Traffic Alert – Using radar sensors, the driver is alerted of approaching cross traffic when backing out of a parking spot, including angled parking.

Side Blind Zone Alert – The system uses radar sensors in the left and right side corners of the rear bumper to look for vehicles in the blind zone areas and indicate their presence by illuminating symbols in the outside rear view mirrors.

Mid-Model Year Cruze ChangesOn some 2012 Cruze models, it may be noticed that the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and/or the Reduced Engine Power indicators do not illuminate and the engine coolant temperature value in the Driver Information Center (DIC) is no longer displayed after the vehicle was in for

service that required the replacement of the Instrument Panel Cluster.

There was a mid-model year change (midway through March) to the Instrument Panel Cluster in which the DRLs and the Reduced Engine Power indicator no longer

illuminate and the engine coolant tempera-ture no longer is displayed in the DIC.

This is normal operation and no repairs should be made.

First Use of New R-1234yf Refrigerant in 2013 XTSA new air conditioning refrigerant, R-1234yf, is being introduced in the 2013 Cadillac XTS and upcoming ATS. R-1234yf is a new environmentally-friendly refrigerant that has a 99.7% lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-134a. GWP is a value used to compare different greenhouse gases.

R-1234yf stands for a specific compound: 1 – double bond, 2 – hydrogens, 3 – carbons, 4- fluorines, yf – position of the fluoro atoms. It is the industry accepted solution for a low GWP refrigerant.

The new refrigerant is considered mildly flammable and has thermodynamic properties similar to R-134a. R-1234yf systems require the use of specific A/C compressor oils.

Revised Service Procedures

TIP: As with all refrigerants, always work in a well-ventilated area and never release refrigerants into the atmosphere.

Technicians repairing or servicing motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems in the U.S. must be trained and certified by an EPA approved organization. Certification is obtained by passing an EPA approved examination. Go to http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/609/technicians/609certs.html for more information.

In Canada, provincial regulations require that all motor vehicle air conditioning service technicians must be trained and certified.

Vehicles equipped with R-1234yf refrigerant systems have unique low and high side service fittings, internal heat exchangers (IHX), and SAE J2842-compliant evaporator cores.

There are new or revised service procedures for R-1234yf equipped vehicles (Refer to the appropriate Service Information for details):

•RefrigerantRecoveryandRecharge

•LeakTest

•EvaporatorCores

• InternalHeatExchanger

A/C Compressor Oils

R-1234yf systems require the use of specific A/C compres-sor oils. Refer to HVAC > Specifications > Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants and Sealers in the Service Information for proper type and use.

Only GM lubricant is approved. The XTS A/C system uses P/N 19260643 (in Canada, P/N 19260644) and the ATS uses P/N 19299051 (in Canada, P/N 19299052).

New Tools and Equipment

New tools and equipment are required to service vehicles equipped with R-1234yf.

GE-50300 Recovery/Recycle/ Recharge Machine for R-1234yf A/C Systems — (certified to SAE J2843) Performs gas analysis before gas recovery or fills with recovery/fill lockout if gas is contaminated (less than 98% R-1234yf). VIN input is required. The VIN is retrieved via an integrated VCI cable con-nected to the vehicle’s OBD2 connector or may be manually en-

tered. It records and prints VIN, pressures, temperature, recovered/charged amount, gas analysis results and encrypts into a warranty code. A printed summary of the completed repair from the GE-50300 is required to be attached to each Repair Order and a warranty code is required to be entered into the comment field of warranty claim for reimbursement.

TIP: The GE-50300 Recovery/Recycle/Recharge Machine for R-1234yf A/C Systems requires product activation within 30 days of the machine’s initial startup. Refer to the Quick Start Guide and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the on-line registration and product activation process.

Draining the Volt High-Voltage Battery Cooling SystemWhen performing any service work on a 2011-2013 Volt that requires removing the high-voltage battery pack or disconnecting any electrical connections at the Battery Bulkhead Disconnect Unit (BDU), the coolant from the drive motor battery cooling system should be drained first. Drain-ing the cooling system before begin-ning repairs will prevent coolant from entering any open electrical connec-tors or harnesses.

Any coolant contacting the terminals will quickly result in corrosion and multiple Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Follow the appropriate Ser-vice Information to disable high volt-age and fully drain the battery coolant.

It also may be helpful to use electrical tape to seal the connections on the battery replay junction block and to protect the harness connectors with a plastic bag and cable tie strap.

Before beginning service repairs, also perform a visual inspection of the drive motor battery cooling system reservoir fluid level. If the coolant level of the drive motor cooling system reservoir is below the seam of the reservoir, per-form leak inspection diagnostics.

Anti-Tamper Coolant Bracket Installation at PDI

Ensure the anti-tamper high-voltage battery coolant bracket is installed to the passenger-side of the high-voltage battery coolant surge tank assem-bly. All Volts built after January 27, 2012 (VIN #CU113809 and higher) are shipped with the bracket in the rear compartment. The bracket is to be installed at the dealership during Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).

TIP: After performing the PDI road test and vehicle charge procedures, the high-voltage battery cooling system coolant level must be checked and adjusted if necessary prior to the anti-tamper bracket installation.

New Dual Brake Pedal Position Sensor New for many 2012 and later model year GM passenger cars and trucks equipped with an automatic transmission is the Electronic Brake Pedal Override feature, which reduces engine power if it detects that the brake pedal is applied while the accelerator is also applied. The Electronic Brake Pedal Override uses a dual Brake Pedal Position (BPP) sensor (two sensors in one). The dual BPP replaces the old style open/closed brake switch that has been used for years.

The dual BPP sensor is actually two separate variable resistors (two separate potentiometers activated by the same connection to the brake pedal arm), each working similarly to a Throttle Position Sensor. The resistors are housed in the same part and are not re-placeable separately. The dual BPP has three wires leading to the ECM and three different wires leading to the BCM.

After various service repairs, the dual BPP sensor requires a relearn procedure in both the BCM and ECM (for example, on 2012 Escalade, Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Savana, Sierra, and Yukon models: BCM relearn – Service Information Document ID 1835636 and ECM relearn – Service Information Document ID 2655204). The relearn procedures will set the BPP sensor’s home values.

The BCM’s value is used to determine the action of the driver applying the brake pedal and to provide this information to the vehicle’s subsystems via the GMLAN communication bus. The ECM’s value is used for the new Electronic Brake Pedal Override feature.

The following service repairs will require a BPP relearn:

•Replacementorremovalofthebrakepedalhardware

•ReplacementorremovaloftheBrakePedalPositionsensor

•ECMreplacementand/orreprogram

•BCMreplacementand/orreprogram

• InstallationofanyGMaccessorythatrequiresprogrammingoftheECM or BCM.

Symptoms of an unlearned or incorrectly learned BPP sensor include:

•ServiceStabilitymessage

•DTCC0277Sym4B(BrakeMasterCylinderPistonPosition Sensor) – Home position not learned

ECM•UnwantedElectronicBrakePedalOverrideactivation(lowpower,

feels like the vehicle is in a traction control or stability control event). If the Traction Control System (TCS) is turned off, the condition will not be present. There will be no indication to the driver that the system is active.

TIP: Other items that may disable the Electronic Brake Pedal Override include TCS disable, Vehicle Stability Enhancement System disable, 4WD Low range, and automatic transmission ranges M3, M2, and M1.

If any of the above conditions are experienced, perform a BPP relearn procedure for the BCM and ECM.

DTCs Set after Brake Pressure Modulator Valve ReplacementIf the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) has been replaced on a 2012 Sonic, a current DTC C0131 (Traction Control System Pressure Circuit Malfunction) may set current and there may be a Traction and Stability Control indicator light on in the instrument cluster. The brake pressure sen-sor voltage is 5 volts with brake pedal released or depressed.

Remove the Brake Pres-sure Modulator Valve (BPMV) assembly and inspect the brake pressure sensor assembly to verify that all shipping material has been removed before installation. If shipping material is not re-moved, this will cause DTC C0131 to set, and possibly damage to both the EBCM and the BPMV.

Thanks to Bryan Brunner

Verify that all shipping material has been removed from the

BPMV assembly.

Erratic Backlight Operation and Possible Battery DrainOn a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, the LED backlighting may not adjust with the dimming pot or the LED backlights may stay on with the igni-tion off. The 12V battery may also be discharged. The backlights include the headlamp switch, steering wheel controls, outside rearview mirror switch, door lock switches, over-head console switches and the integrated center stack. A battery draw of approximately 190 milliamps may be duplicated.

These conditions may be due to a fault in one of the dome lights in the overhead console. Disconnect the dome lights from the overhead console one at a time to confirm a faulty light. Replace the affected dome light and confirm the repair.

Passenger Presence System Loss of CommunicationOn a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) setup cannot be completed after a program-ming event or the Passenger Presence System (PPS) will not zero, or commu-nication with low speed modules may be lost. These conditions may be caused by an incorrectly installed, mispositioned or damaged JX300 splice comb.

Remove the left rear door opening sill plate cover to check the splice comb in JX300. The comb may not be completely seated or may be damaged. Re-move and check the comb as well as check terminal tension of the female terminals in the splice con-nector and repair as needed.

Malibu Eco Active Grille Shutter

Guidelines for Power Steering Powerpack Replacement

On a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, the Check Engine lamp may be illuminated and DTC P069E (Fuel Pump Control Module Requested MIL Illumination) may have set in the ECM. In addition, the FPCM (Fuel Pump Control Module) may have set DTC P059F (Active Grille Air Shutter Performance).

Inspect the active grille shutter for any signs of damage due to collision, ice, snow or road debris. Also check for inter-ference from the outside air temperature sensor wiring or connector.

With GDS 2 connected, command the shutter and confirm that it does not contact anything behind the grille, baffles or mountings. Perform a visual inspection on all connections.

If no conditions are identified, replace the active shutter assembly with actuator.

Thanks to Christopher Crumb

There may be a question whether to replace an Electronic Power Steering Gear Assembly or Powerpack (Module) only (RPO NJ1) on some 2011-2012 Cruze, Volt, Regal; 2010-2012 Equinox, LaCrosse, Terrain; 2012 Verano and 2013 Malibu Eco models.

Powerpack (module) part numbers 13286690, 13365402, 13394025 and 19117588 are on restriction through the GM TAC (Technical Assistance Center). If there is no high speed LAN communication or data cannot be accessed with GDS 2, a new power steering gear assembly will be needed.

The following DTCs are the only reason it would be necessary to replace an NJ1 Powerpack.

C0475 00 – Electric Power Steering Motor Circuit Fault

C056E 46 – Unrecoverable Software

TIP: These codes indicate that the Powerpack should be re-placed. It is suggested to use a wired TIS2Web connection when programming the new Powerpack.

For other DTCs, review the latest version of PIT5063A for additional diagnostic tips.

If it is necessary to replace the Powerpack, check the white tag on the black plastic cover of the Powerpack for a 4-digit code, 1 letter followed by 3 numbers (for example, E103). This code is necessary to order the correct replacement part. Contact GM TAC to confirm diagnosis and order a new Powerpack. One of the following part numbers will be needed:

E103 – 13286690

E121 – 13365402

E131 – 13394025

V102 – 19117588

General Motors service tips are intended for use by professional technicians, not a “do-it-yourselfer.” T hey are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the information applies to your vehicle or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.Inclusion in this publication is not necessarily an endorsement of the individual or the company.

IntelliBeam Testing

Instrument Panel Tweeter Noise

Questions have been raised about how to test the Intellibeam® High Beam Control system (RPO TQ5) on a 2007-12 Escalade during daylight hours. The only way to properly test the IntelliBeam system is at night time with the vehicle moving (Vehicle Speed Sensor input). The system uses a digital light sensor on the back of the rearview mirror. Covering the sensors on the mirror during daylight conditions will not work.

Service Information and the owner manual state that there are different sensitivity settings (Demonstration Mode) available for diagnostics. These reference materials indicate that this is done by pressing the

auto headlamp button (on the left side of the mirror) for 20 seconds until the Intel-liBeam indicator light flashes three times. The different sensitivity settings are not intended to aid in diagnosis. The settings are incorporated into the mirror to meet various government standards.

TIP: Using these different settings affect the performance of the mirror and should not be used.

If a customer accidentally enters this mode, the mirror will return to the normal factory setting after cycling the key.

A rattle noise in left side of the instrument panel may be heard on some 2012-2013 Corvettes. The noise may be caused by the tweeter not being secured to the tweeter grill. The curvature of the instrument panel causes the rattle to appear to be on the left side.

Remove the tweeter assembly from the instrument panel. Secure the tweeter in the grill by applying a small dot of hot melt adhesive on each of the three lock tabs. Only apply enough glue to fill each tab window. Reinstall the speaker assembly to the vehicle and confirm the repair.

Thanks to Jeremy Richardson

Apply adhesive on each of the three grill lock tabs.

No Crank, No Communication with GM LAN after ServiceAfter a service repair on a 2012 Escalade model, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra or Yukon model, that re-quired the X109 connector to be discon-nected, it may be found that the vehicle will not crank and there is no communica-tion on the GM LAN. This condition may be caused by the X109 connector being

plugged in backward. The connector has alignment ribs for proper orientation, but may still be installed backward.

Inspect X109 for proper orientation. Make sure the wire colors on both sides of the connector match.
