ICE CREAM! Sunday, August 26th the Shiner
United Methodist Women will host our annual “ICE
CREAM SOCIAL” along with a “SILEN AUCTION”
in the Activity Center. This is your chance to bring
your most favorite home made ice
cream recipe and win the coveted
“Ice Cream Scoop” award.
The social starts at 5:00 p.m. when
we partake in a variety of sand-
wiches, chips, dips and deserts.
Then we get to feast on the deli-
cious home-made ice cream and
choose a winner. In the past years
we have had many different types
of ice creams from vanilla to Rasp-
berry Sorbet!
Along with our ice cream we can
enjoy all the items in the Silent
Auction. If you have anything that
you would like to add, you can bring it Sunday at
the social or anytime during the week to the church
office. This is always a fun time trying to out bid one
another on the item that we just have to have!
So, bring the kids and come out and enjoy a day of
good food, good fellowship; and an all around good
time at our Annual Ice Cream Social and Silent
Auction.
We all Scream For….

For the message about the cross
is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved
it is the power of God.
1Corinthians 1:18
Last month a man cleaned out his deceased grandfa-ther’s house. He found much of what you might ex-pect from an abandoned home. Let’s cut to the chase and just call it all junk. Well, not all of it! In fact, some have labeled one of his finds as “cardboard gold.” Stored away in the attic was a box of mint-condition baseball cards with names like Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Christy Mathews. You baseball buffs are probably drooling. For the rest of you, just know the cards have been con-servatively valued at $3 million. Go check your attics! Trading cards aside, it isn’t uncommon to be amazed at what we find when we are searching for God. Life and faith with God are not rigid. God moves in power-ful ways, opening our eyes to newness each day. The kingdom of God is very near. Chances are, however, you and I have missed it many times. It hasn’t been covered in dust, stored away in an attic. No, we’ve probably been looking elsewhere, looking for some-thing else or just not paying attention. But when we seek, we find, and then we realize God is working all around us—what a find!
Blessed Beyond Belief,
What a Find!
Hosanna
This comes from the Hebrew word “Hoshana.”
It translates “save, pray,” or “O save now!” The
Jewish Feast of Booths includes this cry. It is
also a part of the triumphal entry of Jesus into
Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
“I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should
ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am
afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having
the form of religion without the power. And this undoubt-
edly will be the case unless they hold fast both the doc-
trine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out.”

Church Email
Words From Wesley Beginning this month, our church is mailing out a
weekly newsletter—by email. It’s not exactly a
newsletter, but it does include a few words from
our pastor, John Fletcher, about some things go-
ing on at church. There are also links to inspiring
stories and interesting articles. The email is open
to anyone who wants to stay in touch with our
church, and, although we don’t want to say it’s
the best part, it is free!
So, get on your computer, IPAD or Smartphone
and go to http://eepurl.com/fjxVE to sign up to-
day. The first email is scheduled for the first
week of the month.

News From Around the United Methodist Church
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — United Methodist
Communications has received two gold Hermes Crea-
tive Awards for the agency’s e-newsletter MyComand
the redesign of its official web-
site UMCom.org. Hermes Creative Awards
is an international competition for those in-
volved in the concept, writing and design of
traditional and emerging media. UMCom.org
was redesigned last year. MyCom was cre-
ated in response to the needs of local
churches for marketing and communication
support.
EDGERTON, Ohio (UMNS) — The community is rallying
around members of the Edgerton United Methodist
Church after their church building burned July 17, ac-
cording to a report on Fortwaynehomepage.net. Fire-
fighters believe lightning was the cause of the massive
blaze. "The only thing you could see through the whole
smoke, I mean you couldn't see nothing except for the
cross — the cross that was lit on the front of the
church," said church member Jaenice Hill.
SAN ANTONIO (UMNS) — A recent
night in jail made headlines but is noth-
ing new to the Rev. Lorenza Andrade
Smith, a United Methodist pastor who has been
living on the streets, offering ministry to the home-
less for the past year. She turned herself in July 1
on a warrant and ticket for “camping in public.” It
is the second time she has spent time in jail for this
offense. The court had given her the option of a
$150 fine or community service. She refused both
because she says she wants to make the point that
the homeless often are jailed for minor offenses
and cannot pay fines or do community service.
“Old tickets pile up, they get stopped for some
silly reason and they get arrested again. They leave
kids behind,” she said. “It is really a tragedy.”

NEW PROVIDENCE, Bahamas (UMNS) — New York
Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty went on the offense
for God at a two-day football camp for more than 50
young Bahamians. Besides introducing them to the work-
out regimen of a professional football player, he also em-
phasized the importance of having a spiritual presence in
their lives. The camp was a partnership between Canty’s
foundation and The United Methodist Church’s Western
North Carolina Annual (regional) Conference.

Faith is Fun YOUTH NEWS
It’s already August and what a fantastic time of year for the youth of our community. The kids are wrapping up their well deserved break from school and most extracurricular sports and activi-ties. There’s been somewhat of a break within the Shiner FUMC youth program, as well, but we’re happy to have kept our Sunday School class going strong through the summer which is something that hasn’t always happened at Shiner FUMC.
The after school program F.U.S.E. took a break during July, but will return for a week this month. We are going to host Vacation F.U.S.E. August 6-9 from 5 to 7 pm at the Activity Center. This will be a traditional style F.U.S.E. event but in-stead of one day a week in August, we will put 4 days into one week, at a little bit later time of day, in hopes that we can introduce some new kids and new volunteers to our program.
If you are interested in volunteering or helping with the Vacation F.U.S. E. we are in need of adult and/or high school mentors & kitchen help from 5 pm to 7 pm. We will also need hot dog wieners, hot dog buns, water balloons, markers, crayola’s, construction paper, glue and glue sticks.
I am very excited about the upcoming school year for our youth program and always welcome ideas, concerns &/or questions, so feel free to contact me anytime. And get out there and invite a child and their family to church!
Blessings always,

We yearn for a stronger connection to God. Many of us
recognize prayer as an important part of that connection.
Yet, praying can seem like a daunting and almost impossi-
ble task. Paul Escamilla shows us how we can learn to
pray through the noise of life.
