July Report

Guest Speaker: Brett Summers Regional Rail Link

SAM Keown introduced guest speaker Brett Summers, Construction Manager and assistant Suzanne Waddell from the Regional Rail Link to inform the Club about the new rail link being built between Werribee and Melbourne.

During an extensive explanation of the new rail project by Brett Summers, outlining reliability and capacity, there were plenty of questions from the floor as members did their best to understand what the project would deliver and how it would affect future travel, especially to Werribee!

Show & Tell (Rosie Hollis & Margaret Allen)

ROSIE Hollis & Margaret Allen presented an extract from Matron Taylor’s ‘An Oral History’ relating to nursing practices of Margaret’s mum at Baxter House in the 1950s and the control of the ‘Baxter Bug’.

Next Guest Speaker: Barry Carter

Barry Carter, The Age Newspaper, Host: Rob Tonkin

From the President’s Desk!

Dear Probians

WELCOME back to some of our members who have been absent over the last few meetings. I trust you have had an enjoyable break from the bleak winter and also to Joan Earl who has had major surgery and is now back home and feeling good. For those members who attended our July meeting, you will have noticed that we placed the seating further back in the

room. I believe it worked better but would appreciate contact from those who are still having difficulty in hearing the meeting clearly. 24 members and guests attended our lunch at The Lara Hotel and were very pleased with the quality and presentation of their meal which were delivered with a minimum of fuss. Rosie made us aware of the Rotary District Project at the former Corio Shire Maintenance Depot which we will visit on 7 August and should be very interesting to see what happens to donated goods. Our Show & Tell segment was most fascinating with a story told by Margaret Allen and Rosie Hollis on ‘An Oral History’ of the former Matron of Geelong Hospital Margaret Taylor. Margaret Allen’s mother was mentioned very favourably in the book and coincidentally Rosie had worked under her during her nursing career. A wonderful connection of 2 members within our Club. Peter Wallis will be taking money for those who put their name down for tickets to ‘South Pacific’. Could you please place your payment in an envelope with your details and place in the tray at the back of the room for collection by Peter. I mentioned the Energy Saving Devices currently being installed in Lara and district and for anyone who would like these connected Free of Charge, you can contact Jade Mills on 0431 028172 who will arrange a time to suit you and explain how they work. They will save you money as all power is turned off once your TV or computer has not been used for a while. Previous units have been left with households with no explanation and therefore many have been disconnected or thrown away. Hopefully you have been enjoying the recent sunny days and that we may catch up again for lunch on 2 August at Black Salt Restaurant or at the Rotary District Project on 7 August.
