Our HSC Students have been hard at work. Some of the wonderful major works of our Art students feature above.

I did have a wonderful holiday in Mongolia and next issue, will publish some photos and bits and pieces about the trip. I went on a botanical expedition to do a survey in the remote Altai Mountains, in western Mongolia and trekked to within 5 km of the Chinese border. Mongolia is a very beautiful country, the people are lovely and their nomadic life-style is fascinating. I will definitely return! Deputy Principal’s Position We have permission to advertise the Deputy Principal’s position that was vacated by Gerd Kreiss following his recent retirement. I am hoping that this position is filled prior to the end of Term 3.

Parent Survey

Parents are invited to complete a survey to assist us in better serving the needs of our school community. You can find the survey under recent news upon this website. Thank you in advance for completing the survey.

students have worked very well all year and are well-prepared for their HSC examinations next Term. For those that have not met requirements, there will need to be a formal interview with me as Principal and their parents. I will call anyone in this situation very soon. Attendance We are continuing our push on improved student attendance – all the statistics show that children who attend school every day do much better not only at school, but beyond school as well. Your child also needs to go to every class and to be there on time. Ms Ruis (years 7-10) and Ms Boyd (years 11-12) are our two Attendance co-ordinators. If you are concerned about your child’s attendance, please contact them. Uniform Thank you to the majority of students and parents who have co-operated with us on improving the uniform. A few students have slipped back into old habits and the school executive will be working with you and the students to rectify this si tuation. One parent has spoken with me about the stitching in her son’s track pants and shirts coming undone; if you are experiencing any problems with the quality of the uniform, please contact me at the school. Quality of your child’s learning I am working with the executive of the school to examine the quality of the programs being offered to your son or daughter in their classes. The first step has been to audit all the teaching and learning programs in the school; the next step will be to look at the quality of these programs. My initial focus will be on Year 7. If you wish to speak with me about any aspect of your child’s learning, please contact me at school. We are also completing a Situational Analysis across various areas of the school, to inform the next 3 years of school planning. This analysis will investigate literacy, numeracy, HSC and SC performance, quality of aspects of the school’s organisation, school leadership. If you wish to learn more about this work, come to a P&C meeting to ask questions.

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK Our HSC students have just completed their trial exams. This is a stressful time for both Year 12 students and teachers and any support the whole school community can give is always appreciated. Parents need to encourage students to pace themselves during the exams – good food and sleep are very important. Taking each exam day by day and trying to avoid feeling overwhelmed is the key to success. We have many resources in place to assist students that are feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Please contact Ms Winter, Mrs Calvert or myself if you are concerned about your child. Completing the HSC is very much a partnership between students, parents and teachers. Congratulations to all students who attended the Rewards day on August 12 at Luna Park. Ms Byrne has commented on their outstanding behaviour and all students had a fantastic time. Students are continuing to strive towards personal goals throughout the year and we hope to have more students involved for the end of year rewards day to Jambaroo. Thank you to Mr Bonacorsso and all Teachers who have worked extremely hard to provide transition activities for our Primary students. This year many students have participated in activities, which this year included our Gifted and Talented program. Windsor High School strives to provide outstanding learning opportunities for all students and cater for their individual needs. I was fortunate enough to work with our sports program and teach archery to a group of talented boys and girls. What a wonderful group of students who represented their schools with outstanding participation and sportsmanship. Students from years 7 to10 will soon participate in an Anti -Cyber Bullying program hosted by the NSW police. This program will inform students about the legal process behind cyber-bulling and strategies to cope with any forms of cyber-bullying they may encounter. Parents play a key role in this process and are encouraged to work with the school and community to ensure their children are safe while using social websites and mobile phones.

A number of recommendation will be highlighted in the next edition of this newsletter to help students and parents cope with this most crucial element of child safety. Year 7 has progressed well so far this year. I have been visiting a number of classes over the past week to check on student’s work and behaviour. I do see more students becoming very familiar with their new surroundings and making the most of each and every lesson. However, in some classes students are not working consistently and some improvement is required. I will be continuing to work with year 7 teachers to ensure all students have the right to learn in a safe and harmonious environment free from disruption. On Friday September 2nd Year 7 vaccinations will occur. Parents will be receiving more information regarding this process very soon. Any enquiries should go to Ms Ruis in the Science faculty. Year 11 students will commence their yearly exams on Wednesday 14th September. This is a final stepping stone prior to the HSC and it is imperative that students begin to prepare themselves for these exams and develop appropriate study skills. Year 12 is almost at the end of their school life!!! Thursday 22 September is the school Graduation followed by the formal on the last day of term. I look forward to the Harbour Cruise and wish all year 12 students the very best for their upcoming HSC exams. Every lesson counts, your teachers are working very hard to ensure you are well prepared for the HSC, the rest is up to you!!! . Good luck.

Until next time...... Mr J Galbraith - Deputy Principal (Relieving)

The new SRC this month decided to support a new charity, the RSPCA. On Tuesday August 16th we held “Cupcake Day for the RSPCA”. We baked up a storm and sold cupcakes at recess and lunch to raise money for the RSPCA; so that they can continue their life saving and important animal welfare work in our community.

On Friday August 26th students raised funds for the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day; by selling pens, badges and wristbands. The sale of this merchandise aids research into a cure for Cancer.

WINDSOR ON STAGE On Wednesday the 3rd of August Windsor High Students presented Windsor On Stage – a matinee concert and evening concert in the school hall. More than 60 students from Years 7 to 12 presented musical and dance items, original compositions and artworks that highlighted the talent of Windsor High students. The overall quality of these performances and artworks reinforced the innate creative skills that so many of our students are able to develop through the schools CAPA programs. Windsor on Stage was well attended and produced some incredible performances. Everyone was more than impressed by the exquisite performance of our year 12 music students, Georgina Sultana, Nathan Trevarthen and Paul Fear. While our junior student’s delighted audiences with a selection of popular, rock, jazz, Latin music and dance. Their dedication to the Arts and desire to succeed ensured that they were able to extract the most from the experience and provided an excellent example of what can be achieved with hard work and commitment. A very special thank you to our P & C and all the wonderful parents and students who helped with publicity, tickets, set up, refreshments, front of house, back stage, sound and lighting. Also, thank you to the school SASS staff who were invaluable in helping to promote and sell tickets for the concert. We need to praise the efforts of our Entertainment crew; Nicole Galbraith, Laura Bishop, David Berger, Rhys Mendham, Emily English, Jasmine Breeze and Shannon Muscolini who worked tirelessly to prepare the front of house, lighting and the sound elements that guaranteed a wonderful show. Finally, we need to acknowledge the dedication of our wonderful teachers and tutors, Mrs. West for the many hours spent organising, preparing and rehearsing students. Mrs Horan and Mrs Windon for their commitment and preparation of the Sydney Met West and Samba dance items, Mr Beedham for preparing and setting up an exquisite art display of student work, Mr.

The Mathematics Faculty would like to welcome parents and students to semester two. Students are now settled into their new classes which remain for the rest of the year. Year 12 have been studying hard, finishing off the curriculum topics and completing revision in readiness for their Trial Examinations. Year 11 will be sitting their yearly examination at the end of this term. We encourage all our senior students to participate and to work with a consistently high effort in their lessons. All students are welcome to come to the staffroom and request any help that they need. We also advise students to take advantage of these excellent websites available for revision. mathsonline.com.au http://hsc.csu.edu.au Students from our top year 9 and 10 classes were invited to attend a mathematics and science career day at the University of Western Sydney’s Parramatta South Campus on Friday 26th August. This was an inspirational day for these students and will help them decide whether to pursue a career in either mathematics or science. During the day, the students heard some motivating talks from some of Australia’s top scientists and mathematicians. They were also able to gather information about some of these careers. This term we are concentrating on teaching our year 8 students extra strategies for problem solving. Students are provided with prompts to help them decode problems and to identify the correct algorisms to work out the answers.

Some of our talented students sat the Australian Mathematics Competition. Results are usually forwarded to the school in October. We are impatiently awaiting the outcomes. Recently some of our students have not been on task during their lessons. I would like to finish off with two suggestions for improving student performance and achieving higher results: Use class-time effectively. Using class-time effectively means staying on task throughout the whole lesson. In this way you learn more when you work in class and have the teacher there to ask questions. If you work in class you don’t get into trouble, your report comments are positive, but most of all it is just common sense – time you waste in class means time you have to make up at home. Choose carefully who you sit next to.

Just because you are compatible with respect to friendship does not mean you are compatible as workmates. Some friends work really well together but other friends always prove to be a major source of distraction. There are just some people that you will not be able to work well with.

In Drama... Parents, siblings, friends and teachers were treated to a wonderful night of performances during the Senior Drama Night in Week 3 of term. Ms Thompson’s HSC class presented their Group and Individual HSC projects and did very well at remembering all their lines! The girls have put in a lot of work over the last few months and are now tweaking their performances ahead of their practical exam in a few weeks time. Ms Parker’s Year 11 class presented several pieces they have been working on in class, their group performance produced many tears of laughter. Ms Barton’s Year 8 drama class have taken to the subject with a great deal of enthusiasm while Ms Parker’s Year 9/10 class are building on their knowledge of mime and movement so the stars of the future are working hard. Finally, a quick reminder to students and parents that mobile phones and Ipods need to stay off and out of sight during class time. Your conversation CAN wait until the next break! The English Faculty

Windsor High School

In English... The start of Term 3 has seen English classes from 7-12 studying a range of exciting new topics. Year 7 have been learning how to ‘read’ visual texts ahead of their film study later in the term while Year 8 have been exploring a range of classic Australian texts as they learn about how Australian culture is represented. Years 9 and 10 are studying some weighty term long units with Year 9 focusing on Shakespeare and Year 10 completing a novel study. Year 12 are continuing towards their HSC, with Trial exams having just been held. Year 11 have been the talk of the English staffroom with the fantastic work many of them have put into their recent speeches; hard work really does pay off. We look forward to the speeches that students in years 7, 8 and 9 are due to present throughout this term. In Public Speaking... Congratulations to both Rhiannon Dark (Yr 8) and Amie Brown (Yr 9) who represented Windsor High School in the local final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking competition. The Legacy competition requires students to present a prepared speech on a topic of their choice along with an impromptu speech on a topic set by the adjudicator on the day. Rhiannon spoke about the impact of the proposed Carbon Tax on Australia while Amie spoke about gay marriage. Amie was selected to represent the region at the next round of finals to be held in two weeks time. Best of luck, Amie.

So much has been happening in Sport that we have not had time to sit at the computer and write a report!!! The Athletics Carnival was held in perfect weather on 20th May at the Blacktown Olympic Park, Rooty Hill. It certainly is a fantastic venue and allows our athletes to really excel at their favourite events. The age champions for 2011 were ... 12 Year Girls ... Jorja Wilson 12 Year Boys ... Kalilou Kamara 13 Year Girls ... Jazmine Hart 13 Year Boys ... Lewis Howarth 14 Year Girls ... Taylah Cottees 14 Year Boys ... Dean Frew 15 Year Girls ... Jamie Eaton 15 Year Boys ... Corey Madden 16 Year Girls ... Chay Wallace 16 Year Boys ... Jesse Jones 17+ Girls ... Claudia Ward 17+ Boys ... Blake Swain

The House Champion for 2011 was Bunderluk on 902 points. Murriong was second on 796 with Kurabi on 717 closely followed by Jirramba on 715. Well done to all those students who attended and competed to the best of their ability. Attendance at the Carnivals continues to be disappointing. School carnivals are considered to be normal school days. Carnivals are about increasing school spirit and developing social relationships beyond the classroom, skills that young people will need in their future lives. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children attend all school carnivals in the future. The Zone Athletics Carnival was again held at Blacktown Olympic Park this time on the 14th June in absolutely appalling weather! It was pouring rain with freezing winds but this did not deter the band of dedicated teachers from Windsor High School turning up and working all day under such extreme conditions! Unfortunately not many Windsor students were as brave as the teachers. We were unable to field even one relay team! This was bitterly disappointing for those students who did attend and tried their utmost to support Windsor High

in a positive way. Congratulations to Luke Rose who qualified for Regional Athletics in shot put. Macquarie Zone cross country carnival was a most successful event for Taylah Cottees who placed first in the 14 year girls. Shanaye Kuntze placed second in the 15 year girls and Lewis Howarth was fourth in the 13 year boys. These students should be congratulated for their continued excellence in all their sporting endeavours. The winter grade sport competition has concluded. Windsor High had three teams in the finals ... Open girls basketball A and B teams, and Open girls soccer. Congratulations to these girls on making the finals in the grade sport competition. Well done to the super coaches, Mrs Brice and Miss Charles. Without the ongoing dedication of these teachers, the competition could not continue to be such a success. Summer grade sports commenced on the 17th August. The boys competition involves cricket, basketball and touch football. The girls sports are softball, volleyball and netball. There is also a mixed t-ball competition but that team has proven to be very popular and is full. Parents are reminded that grade sport is a commitment. It costs $7 per week with coaches and buses being organised according to student choices at the sports assembly. Students cannot change sports. Please support the school by encouraging your child to be in full pe uniform every Wednesday, ready and enthusiastic to participate in their chosen sport. Until next time ... go the basketball and soccer girls ... Mrs Windon and Mrs Horan Sport Coordinators

Welcome to term 3! PE classes are back into the swing of things. There are plenty of new developments going on with the outdoor enclosed courts being totally refurbished. When completed there will be a brand new netball/basketball court and a multipurpose court for our practical classes to use and a new fence.

We have also been lucky enough to have the NSW AFL kindly donate new AFL goal posts plus padding and a whole range of AFL equipment.

Coles Sports for Schools is back on!!!!!!!!

In the first week we accumulated 770 vouchers so keep them coming in. Last year we were able to purchase two new high jump stands, high jump pole, two outdoor soccer portable goals, table tennis table and class set of juggling balls.

All vouchers can be handed into the front office or the PDHPE staffroom. In other exciting news on Monday 1st of August the Hawkesbury City Council Sports awards were held.

Mr Cooper a member of the PDHPE faculty received the sports medal award for 10 years of sporting excellence and commitment to the H a w k e s b u r y C i t y Soccer Club.

This award shows Mr Coopers dedication to his chosen sport. Congratulations Mr Cooper.
