MEET YOURNEW EDITORS!!!If you’ve ever sworn Pam
Dawber (of Mork ‘n’ Mindy fame) sat in front of you during Kabbalat Shabbat, take a second look and try again—it is our own Robynn Merkel! A graduate of Harrison High (Go Warriors!!!), she is a bona fide, dyed-in-the-wool, native Evans-villain. Daughter of TABI Board member Bob Levi and the late Gladys Levi; wife of computer geek Monte Merkel since 1999; mother of Aidan (10) and Phoebe (7); and sister of Joshua Levi (who resides in Indy with his wife Lori and three children), Robynn is a self-professed lover of all things furry, feathered, and scaled. She drives Monte crazy by leaving food and water outside for any wandering critter. The Merkels share their home with two dogs, three cats, one leopard gecko…and a goldfish…and a snail.
What DOESN’T Robynn do? She can identify native Indiana plants, photograph a newly-hatched moth, vigilantly look out for all lost pets in the greater Evansville area, and sit as Vice President on the Board of the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Friends and run the annual booksale. Need I say more? How about continuing as a full-time Ivy Tech student
majoring in Human Services? Teaching in the TABI Religious School? If that still isn’t enough, Robynn is one of the kindest, most thoughtful, exuberant-about-life,
women I’ve met--it is such a pleasure to work with her on this project!
-Jennifer Wampler, co-editor
You may wonder, “Who is this Jennifer Wampler? “ Let me fill you in: our Jennifer was raised in Farmersville Ohio and studied at Bryn Mawr College (AB) and later, Purdue University (PhD) specializing in foodborne pathogens. (I will take my food consumption cues from her at all future picnics and banquets!) At Purdue, Jennifer met the affable Hugh Lippman. After graduation, the
couple moved to San Diego for 2 ½ years. Then destiny--aka Mead Johnson--called and they relocated to Evansville! What good fortune for our community! More good fortune arrived a few years later with the birth of their daughter Aubee Jean.
When Jennifer isn’t educating the world on Mead Johnson products as a medical writer, she travels with Hugh and Aubee Jean, drinks coffee, reads, and practices yoga. She is an excellent cook and makes the most delicious challah I have ever tasted. Being co editor does have perks!
When Jennifer first approached me to co-edit the TABI bulletin, I
admit some trepidation. I mean geez, I am an avid fan and ardent contributor to Facebook but the bulletin for our synagogue?! I was nervous, but am onboard thanks to Jennifer’s cajoling and encouragement. I will be contributing articles and reaching out to our members, but Jennifer is the driving force behind this production.

TEMPLE ADATH B’NAI ISRAEL 2 CHAI TIME
The Word From Our TABI President
From my perspective, our Temple congregation appears like a large and diverse family; some of our family members were born into the congregation and others married into the family, including my wife and myself. Like any family, we can bail out whenever we become dissatisfied. But it’s not good for a family, a faith family, to lose members. We can’t grow that way, we can’t improve if we lose interest in each other.
Every marriage and every family faces adversity. What is important is how we respond to tsuris. To respond well to bad things we need good shared experiences to fall back on. Our Temple Board of Trustees will continue to organize those experiences, to initiate good memories, and as family members, you can help a great deal.
Let us know what the Board is doing right and where we can improve. For me, email is the best way to reach me. I also text on the mobile phone but never when driving! Please prioritize your concerns. It’s good to ventilate when you’re not happy, but it’s not healthy to hyperventilate! Please remember that much of the work of running the temple is the responsibility of fellow congregants giving of their time. Be generous with a word of thanks and encouragement.
Join me in thanking Connie and Joe Grobstein for organizing the bulletin, the service onegs and
Saturday lunches. They have been a great addition to our family for about 5 years and will be missed as they return to Lexington. Also we extend our thanks and farewell to Donnie Wood as he leaves for Dubuque. His voice added much to the beauty of our services and he is helping organize our music program. Todah rabah!
We are grateful for our fine committee chairpersons and their committees. I welcome Jennifer Wampler and Robynn Merkel as they take over publishing our bulletin. Merral Lewis, Phil
Siegel, Mark Senzell and Joe Grobstein conducted our July Shabbat services. Again, todah rabah. Next month, Dr. Lewis will be reaching out to you to help us with the readings during the High Holy Days, the Days of Awe. When he asks, please tell him, “yes, it is an honor.” Please join us as we observe and celebrate this important time of our holy year. And we have a new school principal: we welcome Cheryl Brice and her assistant principal, Lisa Seif. Congratulations and thanks are in order here and we look forward to
an exciting, energetic and engaging new school year.
Finally, about those good experiences…… please join us for our monthly movie nights, Tuesday minyan, Friday and Saturday Shabbat services, and at the end of August, a visit from our Scholar in Residence, Rabbi Michael Cook.
Take care and todah rabah. [email protected]

TEMPLE ADATH B’NAI ISRAEL 3 CHAI TIME
We mourn the deaths of five outstanding and loving individuals, namely, Isabella A. Fine, whose husband was Oscar Fine, a member of B’nai B’rith; Stan Bate, the son of Jack Bate, a member of B’nai B’rith; Virginia “Gigi”
LeVine, the wife of Irving LeVine, a B’nai B’rith member; Michael Sabel, the son of Dr. Emanuel Sabel, a B’nai B’rith member and June Zendell, a member of TABI who seldom, with her family, missed a Shabbat Service. May their souls rest in peace and our sympathy to their respective families.
An emergency meeting of the local Lodge was held to say the Mourner’s Kaddish in memory of those who died.
Discussion followed our prayers. We learned from Scripture that “God is just, although we do not always comprehend His ways; that there is a season for everything, a time for every experience under heaven; a time to be born and a time to die.” The President then read a poem which appeared in the Temple bulletin dated May 30, 1974 (see sidebar).
On the brighter side...
The Lodge received a thank you note from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) for our Teddy Bear delivery. We thank Karen Tannenbaum for her assistance and note stating“My CASA Boys sleep with the teddy bears.”
Dear friends of the Lodge, Alvrone and Ron Sater also made a donation in honor of Phyllis (Grusin) Weinstein’s birthday, to honor their great grandson, Samy Weiss on his first birthday (Mazel Tov to Joni and Danny, mother and father of Samy), in honor of
Hilda Schatz and Hannah Barancik on her Bat Mitzvah.
B’nai B’rith takes this opportunity to thank Joe and Connie Grobstein for all that they did for our Temple and to show our appreciation for their contribution to the Teddy Bear Project.
Livesavers
In last month’s TABI bulletin the B’nai B’rith article said:
“If you, the reader of this article, has your name in the minutes herein above described or elsewhere, you are to send your check for not less than $5.00 made payable to B’nai B’rith and mail to:
Phillip H. Siegel100 Northwest First Street #202Evansville, IN 47708”
The Lodge only heard from Alan Newman, Scott Lobel and Jeffrey Berger, all of Hilliard Lyons for which we are grateful.
However, we are very disappointed in the response and blame it all on the economy.
It was suggested that we remind those “lifesavers” who have overlooked the above request.
Thank you!
GODGod is not exactly a person
Nor a spirit to me,He is some kind of spirit-person
Who lives inside of me.
His house is billions of miles tall,With greenery up and down the wall. And on the wall He has a picture of
Moses “Our Teacher” at Sinai,And of the people of Israel who cry
“We will hear and we will obey.”
His bed is the whole sky,So big, nice and cozy.
Even though I have never seen itWhen we sit on my green shag floor.
He has a small dinky telephoneOn which He talks to me alone.
Oh, my goodness, twenty minutes!I have to get off the phone.
He has the whole Artic CircleFor His refrigerator,
There He keeps His kosher meat-But not alligator.
When He has me over for dinnerHe fixes me some juicy corn beef.
I am using a whole piece of paper,Writing about God and my belief,
But, there is not enough paper on earthTo “RIGHT” on GOD and His
technique.- Kathy S.

MEET YOURNEW TABI RELIGIOUS
SCHOOL PRINCIPALAfter a fond farewell to
Principal Elissa Bakke, it is a pleasure to welcome Cheryl Brice as the new TABI Religious School Principal.
Cheryl brings over 32 years of leadership and teaching experience with children and adults. Her passion is making a difference in the lives of 1,000’s of my students by helping them to achieve leadership excellence through goal setting, life skills, and through the example of positive role models. The rewards of seeing a shy child of five become a World Champion martial artist at age ten by utilizing the life skills of persistence, focus and discipline that she learned through our Black Belt Leadership program is amazing. To see that same child become a young adult of twelve and complete two levels of instructor
certification so that she can mentor other children (and adults) to have those same life skills is priceless! This is Cheryl’s work and the life she has chosen – to make a difference in the lives of all her students.
Her desire to help others stems from the Jewish values, ethics and integrity her parents provided through her Judaic studies and from their examples of self-sacrifice.
Cheryl’s daughter, Katherine, is currently enrolled in the
TABI Religious School where she is learning and will continue to learn these same values.
If you are interested in teaching at our TABI Religious and Hebrew School
please send your personal information and teaching experience to

My new travel mantra is “if you can’t eat it or wear it, don’t buy it.”
Armed with that as a guide to all shopping opportunities with the exception of purchasing gifts for others, Michael and I boarded the plane to Tel Aviv and headed for Israel.
Ten hours later, we landed at Ben-Gurion Airport, an architectural beauty welcoming over 11 million visitors each year.
We picked up a car and headed to the northernmost town of Metula located on the Lebanese border. On the way we stopped in Safed for lunch at the Café Bagdad. This was our second visit to this lovely outdoor café with seating overlooking the upper Galilee and allowing for great people watching. Safed is one of the 3 holy cities in Israel (along with Jerusalem and Tiberius) and home to a sizable population of ultra orthodox Jews. There was a lot of typical tourist shopping as well as “frum” clothing, items that are designed for the very modest wearer. A long black skirt made its way into my bag and we headed for Metula.
We checked into the Alaska Inn and spent the next 2 days exploring the Golan Heights and the northern Galilee. The weather was sublime with gentle breezes sweeping over the lush fields of the northern regions. We stopped at Israel’s only ski resort (yes, it is small!), a winery and several battlefield sites remembering the wars of 1967 and 1973.
We checked out and headed for Nazareth to visit the Church of the Annunciation. Nazareth is known as the “Arab capital of Israel” and the shopping reflects that culture. It is easily possible to purchase gorgeous long dresses known as abaya and a colorful array of scarves, as well as many chotchkies and pretty souvenirs to keep the memories alive long after returning home.
Braving the traffic once more in leaving Nazareth, we made our way back to the airport where we returned the car, jumped on the train, and journeyed to Jerusalem. After checking in at the architecturally famous YMCA, we headed out for a walk to the Old City.
Images of Israelby Nancy Drake
Nancy and Michael Drake enjoy traveling and all that goes along with the pleasures of getting to know new places and re-visiting favorite old spots. This article is a journal of their third trip to Israel in October 2009 and their experiences. Nancy, along Kelley Coures and Jack Schriber, also writes the weekly On and About Town column for the Evansville Courier Press.

TEMPLE ADATH B’NAI ISRAEL 8 CHAI TIME
There are not enough words to adequately describe Jerusalem. It is easy to fall in love with this glorious, historic, ancient, modern, busy, beautiful, religious, and thrilling city. She is home to the holiest of places for Christians, Jews and Muslims. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Via Dolorosa, the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock shrine are but a fraction of the places bringing tourists numbering in the millions to visit Israel and make their religious connections. All these sites are to be found in the Old City, a walled collection of four distinct neighborhoods appearing much as they did in the 1860s when that area was the entire city.
When in Jerusalem, it is imperative that one visits Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum. Established in 1953, this museum exists in the tradition of "Vehigadeta Lebincha" ("And you will tell your children"), insuring the young will learn about this tragic and horrible event in our history. It is not a comfortable visit and many visitors are reduced to tears. This was our third visit and it was as painful as the first.
We bid farewell to Jerusalem after breakfast on the veranda overlooking the King David Hotel, boarded the train, and arrived in Tel Aviv in time for a walk along the beach and a great lunch of Middle Eastern fare. The languid breezes helped along with slow-turning ceiling fans and open windows overlooking the Mediterranean made for a perfect welcome to the hottest spot to be in Israel today.
Tel Aviv is fast paced and exciting. Cranes pepper the skyline as new construction and renovations are taking place everywhere one looks. The city reflects the Bauhaus designs of many of the German Jewish architects trained in the Modernist school of architecture in the 1930s in Germany. The style collaboration of these designers became known as the International Style.
The final full day was spent in Jaffa, an easy walk from our hotel, along the Mediterranean. Restaurants, art galleries, fine stores, theatres and souvenir shops make this a most pleasant
sojourn. We enjoyed lunch at Doktor Shakshuka, a well known restaurant in the flea-market area and known for its Moroccan and Libyan fare. Most ordered dish? Shakshuka, a tomato and egg concoction that is quite delicious.
The question most asked of us is the matter of feeling safe. This was our third visit to Israel and we feel as safe there as we do anywhere else. As military service is compulsory, one encounters soldiers everywhere, and there is a tremendous sense of security in that. It is impossible to gain entry in any public building without going through some sort of security check.
There is a real zest for life in this tiny country. Surrounded by historically unfriendly neighbors, some intent on their destruction, the Israelis display a passion that is palpable and exciting. Theirs is a multicultural population of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, Ethiopians, Druse, Bedouin, Russians, Arabs and Americans.

Tending Our RootsThe Washington Avenue temple, completed
in1904, served as a vibrant worship space until the 1980 purchase by Patchwork Central. Fire destroyed the building only three years later. Patchwork members preserved the corner Tower surrounded by a green garden sanctuary. The Tower continues to signal the presence of Patchwork Central at the corner of 6th and Washington as well as define its current logo:
Although the synagogue has been lost, the Tower stands as a reminder of the cultural history of Evansville. And the non-profit Patchwork organization continues to serve the struggling neighborhoods near downtown Evansville.
Twenty-five years have passed since the Tower was rebuilt. At a minimum, renovations including rebuilding the wooden roof and floor, repairing and resealing all windows, and patching and tuck pointing masonry are now necessary to guarantee it stands for many more. Patchwork anticipates the project will cost $36,000 and to date has raised a total of $15,000 from the Lois Hamburg Trust and Evansville Redevelopment Commission.
To directly contribute to this project, checks should be made payable to Patchwork Central and designated “Tower Fund”. All contributions are tax deductable. Contact Alan Winslow or Patchwork Co-directors John and Amy Rich (424-2735) for more information.

AND JOY FINE PASS THE CHALLAH AND TAKE NAMES...
An Oneg Committee has been formed to share the responsibility of providing food for Friday night Onegs. The Co-Chairs have asked the following to assume this monthly responsibility:
August - Nancy DrakeSeptember - Joy Fine
October - Lois Simon and Marcia PearsonNovember - Sonja Eskind &Nancy Givon
December - Sandy Newman(Stan) & Jennifer WamplerJanuary - Deena Laska & Havi Trofkin
February - Debbie Goldman & Rachael GoldmanMarch - Helen Anne Siegel & Sonnie Cibull
April - Lynn Senzell & Dana LobellMay - Sue Shovers & Sue Barancik
If there is a problem at the time of your Oneg, please call Doris or Joy. To avoid over-buying the chairs have provided the following suggestions:
1. Two challot may be picked up at Schnuck's on Washington Avenue. This is a standing order.2. Purchase no more than two sweets to avoid an accumulation of baked goods.3. A seasonal fruit.4. Cheese & crackers.
The actual purchases will be up to the individual(s) assigned for each month. The donations may be dropped off at the Temple and Tony will set up the trays. (Please call ahead to ensure Tony or Barbie is available to let you in).
We hope this arrangement works well. We thank Doris Siegel for kicking off the Oneg season for the month of July. We thank all the monthly contributors in advance for their full cooperation.

Dear Friend:
One of the last visual reminders of the Jewish community’s presence within the city of Evansville sits on
the corner of 6th
Street and Washington Avenue—the corner tower of what once was the Washington
Avenue Temple. The Tower is now owned by Patchwork Central and is in need of renovation. We are
asking for your help to see that this landmark is preserved.
As you may know, the Washington Avenue Temple
was completed in 1904 and was the worship space
for the congregation until 1980 when the building
was sold to Patchwork Central. Patchwork is a non-
profit organization founded in 1977 that seeks to
serve the struggling neighborhoods near downtown
Evansville by offering a variety of services to low
income residents.
Only three years after Patchwork bought the
Temple, the building was destroyed by fire. While
the rest of the building was demolished, members of
Patchwork decided to preserve the Tower and
surround it with a green garden sanctuary.
Twenty-five years have passed since the Tower was
rebuilt, and it needs renovation so that it may stand
for many more years. While the cost of this
restoration is significant for a small non-profit
organization like Patchwork, our Board of Directors
and Worship Community are committed to
completing the project.
We recognize the Tower as part of the cultural and
aesthetic history of Evansville, even though the
synagogue has been lost. Maintaining the tower maintains Patchwork’s longstanding—more than 30
years now—commitment to its neighborhood and to what is beautiful about that neighborhood at a time
when many venerable city structures are more expediently destroyed. The Vanderburgh County historic

Avner, Yehuda. The Prime Ministers: An Intimate Narrative of Israeli Leadership. Avner arrived in Palestine in 1947 as a dedicated 19-year-old Zionist, on the eve of the birth of the Jewish state. He eventually entered Israel’s Foreign Service and served as speechwriter, secretary, and advisor to four Israeli Prime Ministers: Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, and Menachem Begin. This often-fascinating insider’s account of the careers and personalities of these leaders is a semiautobiographical rendering of Avner’s own experiences during critical episodes in Israeli history, especially during the War of Independence. This is a revealing story of how these leaders operated in moments of both calm and crisis.
Lipstadt, Deborah. The Eichmann Trial. “The Eichmann Trial makes an excellent primer on a landmark event. With impressive authority and commendable concision, Lipstadt frames and explores to its known

horrifying and depressing episode.”—The Washington Post

His uncle takes his kippah home with him to Los Angeles and wears it on Rosh Hashanah. A big gust of wind blows the skullcap away and it lands on the head of Benjamin

Australia. As the yarmulke changes heads, it travels to Israel, Paris, Argentina, and Miami, celebrating the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Hanukkah, and Purim, until it coincidentally makes its way back to New York where Josh discovers it in a box in the synagogue on Shavuot! Fun for K-2nd grade.
Rubenstein, Robert. Zishe the Strongman. Based on a true biography, this picture book in warm sepia tones tells of a Polish
Jew who emigrated to the U.S. in the early twentieth century and became a famous circus strongman. Amazing! (The current issue of Reform Judaism has a lengthy article for adults on this man) For K-3rd grades.
Stampler, Ann. The Rooster Prince of Breslov. When the prince rips off his clothes and insists on crouching naked on the floor and crowing like a rooster, the king and queen offer a bag of gold to anyone who can cure him. The doctor, the magicians, and the sorcerers all fail. Yet a frail old man with a very peculiar plan turns the rooster prince into a real mensch, full of compassion and ready to become a wise and benevolent king. Stampler's witty
retelling and Yelchin's imaginative graphite and gouache illustrations bring to life this well-loved Yiddish folktale from Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810). Grades 1-4.

It is time for our congregation to bid a fond farewell and best wishes for future success to three of our TABI member families. All have
contributed their time, skills, and love of Judaism to enhance our Temple.
At the end of July, Connie and Joe Grobstein will return to their permanent home in Lexington. During their five years plus in Evansville, they have made the Temple a priority in their lives. Besides being regular attendees at Shabbat services, both Friday nights and Saturday mornings, their involvement has been extensive. Connie has been the Editor of the Bulletin; she and Joe cooked, served, and schlepped for Onegs and Shabbat lunches; they have both served on temple committees. During the time when we were without an office manager, Connie stepped in to fill the job. We wish Joe and Connie a hearty Mazel Tov on their move back to their much loved city and wish them good health and happiness.
Farewell and best wishes to Michael and Heidi Slavkin and children Jacob and Emma, on their move to the Fort Wayne area for Michael’s new position as Dean of the College of Teacher Education at Manchester College in North Manchester, IN. Heidi will be teaching at a junior-senior high school. The Slavkins will be greatly missed for their contributions as teachers in the TABI religious school. While employed at USI, Michael brought in an excellent exhibit from the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington that attracted students and the general public.
Donald Wood will be sorely missed by the Shabbat morning group, not only for his friendship, but also for his beautiful singing voice, as he moves to Iowa for the next chapter of his
life. Donald has enhanced services and special programs at TABI by leading the congregation in song. Mazel tov, Donald, on your future opportunities in music and teaching Spanish and whatever life brings.
We extend a very heartfelt Mazel Tov to Carol Abrams and Lisa Seif for their inclusion in the Evansville YWCA’s list of 100 women who have made significant contributions to the community over the past 100 years. Also on this distinguished list are the late Isabella Fine and Sadelle Berger for their many civic, philanthropic and cultural contributions.
Leah Lurye Murphy, the daughter of Lillian and Donald Lurye, received her Doctorate in Psychology on May 18th from New York University. Besides her beaming parents, Leah’s cheering squad included husband, Eddie, and their two-year old daughter, Sabrina. Leah and her family reside in Memphis, TN. Congratulations to all.

TABI GIFT SHOPThe Temple Gift Shop is experiencing a reawakening!
We have ordered lots of new items. The man in the big brown truck has delivered a really BIG brown box for the shop. It is just the first of many that we will be ordering in the weeks to come. I am most excited because this order is one of exceptional values. We were very fortunate to be able to obtain a wonderful assortment of merchandise at truly great prices. Everyone loves a bargain and this fits the bill! We have a few New Year cards, honey jars, and
shofarot. There are plastic shofarot for the children and ram's horn for the adults. We have a lovely supply of jewelry--necklaces and bracelets--beaded and jeweled. You must see these things to really appreciate their beauty. We also have lovely Bar and Bat Mitzvah gifts for
our young people. We have many things to enhance a young person's Judaic collection. There is a great supply of CD's from recent Temple concerts. While I know that not all of our customers’ needs
may be met, I do know that we are able to order many items specifically for JUST YOU! My catalogs are beautiful to see and I know there is something for everyone's taste We can order items and they most likely will be here within a 2 week period. As always, I am just a phone call away. Our regular Sunday hours will begin with the beginning of Sunday School in the fall. I am at the Temple every Tuesday morning from 8-9 and Barbie, most graciously, will be able to help you.
