Not all children learn in the same way which is why you have options about what school to enroll your child in. Private, public and home schooling all have their individual advantages and disadvantages, but one of these schools will provide your child with their ideal learning environment!

EducationEducation

If you’re looking to save money, private school may not be the best choice. However, if you feel your child will greatly benefit from

private school, then search for scholarship opportunities! Your child’s education is extremely important - whatever the cost. Also, private schools rarely provide their students with transportation, which may cause working parents to stress about how their child will get to and from school. Private schools have many positive notes as well! Classes are small and your child can easily receive one on one attention with their teachers. Public schools tend to be the go to school for families and it’s easy to see why. They’re convenient and have a variety of paths for your child to take. If your child is interested in band, cooking or even sewing, they can take a class on that subject.

Public Schools

and

Beyond

EducationEducationHaving the option to take subjects that aren’t strictly based on the c u r r i c u l u m makes every day more exciting for the students. Not only do the classrooms provide students with options, but there are also numerous after school activities for your child to join. This is ideal for parents who work late some nights and gives children an extra opportunity to interact with their fellow students. Classroom sizes at public schools are large and sometimes children may not receive the attention they need. Public schools also teach at a mid learning level, which will either be beneficial or disadvantageous, depending on your child. However, honor courses are available

for students who need more of a challenge. Not all t e a c h i n g has to take place in a school b u i l d i n g .

Home schooling may be the best option for some families who want their child to learn in a controlled environment. By home schooling your child, they will be taught self motivation and independence because of the freedom they have. Your child will also learn without the negativity of other students who may not be focused on their schooling. If you do decide to home school your child, make sure they have other opportunities to interact with children their age. As a parent, you have the final say in what school your child attends, but including your child in the conversation is important. Their personal input may sway your decision for the better.

After School ActivitieS

Your child returns from school, throws of their shoes and announces, “I’m bored”. You look around at your newly cleaned house and begin to panic. When the school year starts up, parents everywhere begin to get back on schedule, but whenever kids get home from school, it’s as if summer never ended.

Keeping your child entertained doesn’t have to involve a TV remote or game controller. Remember how much fun you had as a kid? Try introducing classic kid games to your new generation of little ones. Games as simple as hide and seek, tag and cops

and robbers have been forgotten in this technological age. Plus, playing outdoors keeps the house clean and the children active. If it’s warm out, purchase a bag of water balloons and watch in amazement as children from all over the block venture out of their bedrooms to partake in a friendly water balloon battle.

If weather permits, encourage your children to put up a lemonade stand in the yard. Just

because gas prices are up doesn’t mean all prices have to inflate! Sell refreshing cups of lemonade to your neighbors for 50 cents and maybe throw in a freshly baked cookie for another quarter. Who knows, maybe your kids will start a weekly event!

Another idea to keep your children entertained and happy is by making an arts and crafts box. Fill an empty shoe box with construction paper, glue, markers, stickers, dry noodles and anything else your child can use to create a masterpiece. After their Picasso is complete, make sure they safely repack their goodie box so it’s ready for their next art project.

Kids may be difficult to please at times, but once their imagination starts up, play time can easily last for hours!

As parents, we want to keep our child consistently happy and sometimes this involves feeding them unhealthy snacks. Thanks to tempting commercials, our children have been exposed to every delicious, unhealthy food product on the market. Children will naturally be drawn to the foods that are cleverly advertised and have pretty packaging, but these foods do not promote a healthy lifestyle.

When your child looks for a snack, healthy choices should always be readily available. If your pantry is composed of granola bars, fruit and trail mix, your child only has the option to snack on healthy food. When you have the decision to eat a doughnut or oatmeal for breakfast, desire usually overcomes us. However, if the doughnut was not an option to begin with, the oatmeal wins. Eliminating junk food from the menu is the easiest way to develop healthy eating habits. We don’t have to deprive our children of these treats altogether, but junk food should definitely only be eaten in moderation. You don’t have to announce to your child that they will begin eating healthy because sometimes kids associate “healthy” with “not tasty”, just switch up your pantry.

The eating habits children develop when they are young will determine their relationship with food for their whole lives. If your child is exposed to healthy eating habits at a young age, they will make healthier choices as adults.

The Magik TheatreIn the past 14 years, the Magik Theatre has

taught San Antonio children about the beauty and magic of theatre. Their unique philosophy proves that education and imagination can truly intertwine. All the plays produced at the Magik Theatre are based on books children read in school. Along with watching a fun, but educational play, all kids are provided with a study guide designed to help them think about the play more clearly and understand all the lessons reflected in the plays. The Magik Theatre rests in the heart of downtown and has been the destination for countless field trips.

If you’ve been thinking about the next place to throw your child’s birthday party, the Magik Theatre will be happy to provide you with a day of nonstop entertainment! Their birthday packages include tickets to the show, use of the lobby and a gift for the birthday boy or girl.

Starting August 10 and lasting until September 24, the Magik Theatre will be playing “The Jungle Book”! The play will transport you to the jungle with Mowgli and all of his jungle friends. Bagheera, a black panther, and Baloo, a friendly bear, will help Mowgli decide whether he should stay in the jungle with his animal friends or go live in the real world. The Magik Theatre truly is a magical experience for kids and parents of all ages. www.magiktheatre.org

State Parks Day Trip

The weeks seem to become more and more hectic, but your weekend should be filled with relaxation and family time. Visit one, or all, of the state parks in Texas and watch as your children play and your stress melts away.

Lost MaplesVisit Lost Maples this fall and witness the gorgeous transformation from summer to fall. The red, gold and orange foliage draw people to the beautiful state park as well as the vast array of rare bird species. The Sabinal River flows through the park and provides campers with a place to cool off after a long hike or bike ride. Lost Maples is easily one of the most beautiful parks in Texas, especially during these fall months.

Bastrop State ParkSpend the day paddling a canoe, swimming in a sparkling pool or golfing at one of the best courses in Central Texas at Bastrop State Park. Bikers enjoy the 12 mile scenic route along Park Road between Bastrop and Buescher State Parks and if it’s too hot outside, jump in your car to experience the beautiful scenery in air condition. Lake Bastrop provides campers with a place to water ski, boat and fish for a day of water fun!

Dinosaur Valley State ParkDinosaur Valley State Park is quite a drive from San Antonio, but the drive will prove to be worth it once you step foot in the remarkable park. Located near Glen Rose, Dinosaur Valley has some of the best well preserved dinosaur tracks in the entire world! Along with the breathtaking prints is a 70 foot Apatosaurus and a 45 foot Tyrannosaurs Rex. Your family will feel as if they’ve been transported to the prehistoric ages! Camp grounds and cabins are available, with hotels nearby.

New BraunfelsNew Braunfels

WILLKOMMEN!For those of you who need to

escape the city noise, come to New Braunfels. New Braunfels brings fresh, southern air to all visitors who enter the historic town. Unique shops align the streets with numerous attractions all around. Kid friendly activities include venturing into the caves at Natural Bridge Caverns, visiting the McKenna Children’s Museum and floating down the Guadalupe River. The McKenna features tons of exhibits that your child will love! Destination Space takes your child into the depths of outer space and the grocery store provides hours of fun. If you don’t want to plunge into the Guadalupe, you can still enjoy gazing upon the beautiful river while eating an amazing meal at the Gristmill. Thankfully, New Braunfels hasn’t been developed into a metropolitan and hopefully it never will!
