From the Vicarage

August 2011.

I write this in the second week of the phone hacking scandal, and if

the past fortnight is any indication, by the time you read this the

government will have fallen, the Queen will have abdicated, and

Martians will have taken over the world. Oh well, it will give us

something other than the Parish Share to worry about.

I confess that I have been completely absorbed by the unfolding

story, catching every news bulletin, following it on Twitter, discussing

it on Facebook, to the point where its sound and fury have drowned

out everything else. Well, nearly everything else. I went to see an old

lady, a housebound widow, who has spent her whole life hereabouts.

She had never been to London, or been written about in a newspaper,

or been considered important, but she didn’t seem particularly

bothered by this. She had been too busy looking after people; her

brothers and sisters, her parents, her husband and her children and

grandchildren, her neighbours, and had done so not because she was

looking for acclaim or reward but simply out of sheer goodness. She

was shrewd, funny, generous in spirit, stoical, decent and as honest as

the day is long. The more I talked to her the more discomfort I felt

at having become so preoccupied with these faintly preposterous,

thoroughly self-regarding, media melodramas.

As I was leaving she said, ‘I remember for a treat once we walked

across the fields to Twywell and sat outside the pub and had a packet

of crisps and a lemon and lime. It doesn’t sound much, does it? But do

you know, we couldn’t have been happier’.

I wonder how many of those involved in the scandal, winners and

losers, when they get to the end of their lives, will look back and

wonder if, for all the attention, the rewards, and the intoxication of

power, it was really worth it?

Yours in Christ,

Fr Richard.

Wine Walk About The Wine Walkers travelled from England to a stopover in France and on to Italy via Germany and then a visit to Mexico in 3 and half hours. They sipped fine English wines, savoured cheese from France, ice cream and hot cherries from Germany, experienced the flavour of Italy and wore moustaches and sombreros in Mexico. The Wine Walkers all arrived at their final destination, the Vicarage, in good spirits for a cup of coffee. The high point of the evening came with a mass sing song accompanied by Father Richard on his grand piano. A splendid evening was had by all. Thank you hosts for giving everyone a fun evening. The consensus of opinion was let us do it all again next year. Approximately £250.00 was made for Church funds.

Summer Fete The weather forecast was dire but fortunately we did not require our galoshes. A short sharp shower just after we had erected the tents sent us scurrying for shelter and once again after the Fete was opened by the Chairman of the Parish Council, Mr Gordon Swann. Many thanks must go to that hard core of people who worked so hard before and after the Fete - it was back breaking work and in some cases sent the legs a wobble. Thanks to the lovely May Queen and her pretty attendants, all those people who helped on the stalls and everyone who donated cakes, bottles and raffle prizes, etc. Well done to Christian for the puppet show. The children adored it and so did the adults. Thank you also to everyone who donated teddies and soft for the soft toy tombola. We had around 140 and they all went to loving homes. It was a joy to see the faces of the children as they won them. Please save your soft toys again for next year. Congratulations to Kathy Hobbs who managed to find 20 more people to join the Church Monthly Draw at the Fete. For anyone not sure what the Draw entails - you buy a number which will remain the same each month for £1. The draw is made in church on the first Sunday of the month. If you are lucky and win - and many are - there are 3 prizes. All profits go to the Restoration Fund for the church. If you would like to join to help the church, please speak to Kathy Hobbs, John Havlicek or a churchwarden. Back to the Fete, we raised almost £1,700 for the church. Thank you to all who turned out, on a risky day weatherwise, to support us.

Church Monthly Draw

Total receipts of £298.00 are divided equally between the winners and the Restoration Fund. Winning numbers for the July monthly draw are: 1st Prize No. 121 £74.50 2nd Prize No. 302 £44.70 3rd Prize No 273 £29.80 If you would like to join the monthly draw (£1.00 per share per month) which takes place on the first Sunday of the month, please contact Kathy Hobbs on 01933 398794.

Songs Of Praise on the Green.

On a lovely hot summer’s evening we gathered together under the shade of the trees on the Green in Well Street for Songs of Praise organised by the Inter Church Group. Approximately 80 people from the Chapel and Church took part and joined in the hymns with the lusty singing. We were accompanied on the Keyboard by a well-known personality - none other than our own Vicar , Father Richard Coles. The Songs of Praise was led by Tony Webster , the Chapel Minister which he scattered with amusing anecdotes Perhaps next year we could have some requests to sing hymns that have a special meaning to the people who choose them.

St Mary’s Church Fund Raising Events

The fund raising committee are organising the following events:

Afternoon Tea The next afternoon tea will be on Sunday 7th August between 4.30 and 5.30 pm in the church. On the menu will be sandwiches, trifle and cake - highly recommended.

Evensong will be at 6.00 pm which will be followed by light refreshments.

Sponsored Bible Reading We are hoping to have a sponsored bible reading in the autumn to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Money raised will go towards the cleaning of our Church organ .We need to raise about £14,000. The cleaning can be done in phases and Jonathan, our organist, is seeking donations from various places to help raise the money. We hope as many people as possible will take part. It has been recommended we only attempt the New Testament this year. At present we are still working out the details but it will not be done in front of a congregation just those taking part at the time. The organ is about 250 years old and is a particularly famous instrument. From time to time it needs an MOT to keep it in splendid working condition. The last time it was cleaned was 50 years ago.

Installation of the Bishop of Brixworth

Wednesday the 29th June was the patronal festival of St. Peter the Apostle. Each year Peterborough Cathedral celebrates their patronal festival of St. Peter by inviting Church wardens, Chairs of Governors of Church Schools etc to a service in the cathedral followed by tea in the Bishops Palace garden. This year the service was a little special it focused on the welcome and installation of the new Bishop of Brixworth, The Right Revd John Holbrook. Also, the service featured a signing of a Partnership Declaration between the Bishop of Peterborough and the Bishop of Seoul, ( that is to say a twinning with Seoul). In the Cathedral not a seat was empty, there must have been about 1,000 people plus guests including mayors and mayoresses from the Diocese. It was a bit daunting the only faces I recognised from all those people were Bishop Donald and Archdeacon David. Not a familiar face was in sight. While waiting for the service to begin Cecilia Okjoo Park, the organist from Seoul Cathedral, played the Cathedral organ. It can only be described as magnificent. A tiny Korean Lady whose finger work and expression on the organ was breathtaking. The new Bishop of Brixworth began his sermon with a couple of jokes, one which was rather thought provoking will be at the end of this article. During the sermon the Vicars wife sitting on the next chair fell asleep. It must have been the warmth of the cathedral. After the formalities of Installing the Bishop the service moved on to signing the Commitment of Partnership . Bishop Don welcomed the Most Revd Paul Kim, Primate of Korea and Bishop

Page 10: AUGUST 2011

of Seoul and his delegation. Bishop Don announced that Bishop Paul was going to speak. It took a few minutes to realise that he was speaking in Korean and not in English with a very strong accent. However, there was a Korean Priest living and working in England standing right next to him who translated. The Korean Bishop did speak again later in clear English with a voice that demanded attention which to listen to was very pleasant. In future we can look forward to exchanges with the Koreans and to learn a great deal about their culture and their country. After the service the hoards of people retired in crocodile fashion to the Palace gardens for tea and strawberries.

The Bishops Joke with a message In one particular monastery it was the custom that the Sunday sermon was given by each monk in turn. Finally it became Brother Daniels turn, ( who was not a pubic speaker and was terrified by the thought). He rose from his place and began:- “ I don’t suppose you know what I am about to say this morning”, he asked. His brother monks replied, “No”. “Neither do I” said Brother Daniel and fled to the vestry. The Abbot was not best pleased and informed Daniel that he was to give a proper sermon the next Sunday. Come the day and Daniel rose from his place and began: “I don’t suppose you know what I am about to say?” His brother monks all replied in unison “Yes”. “In that case”, said Daniel, “ there is no point in my repeating it” and once again he fled into the vestry. The Abbot was furious. Daniel was charged with delivering a proper sermon the next Sunday or he would be in serious trouble. Again he rose from his place and faced the assembled monks. Again he began, “ I don’t suppose you know what I am about to say?” His fellow monks were somewhat puzzled. Some said ”yes” and some said “No”. Daniel said,” In that case those who know can tell those who don’t” Again he fled into the vestry leaving a buzz of chatter in the pews. After the service there was no immediate reaction from the Abbot. He appeared in Daniels cell just before Evening prayer saying:- “Masterful! The best sermon I have heard. Those who know tell those who don’t. Congratulations Daniel”.

Thank you to the Buffs

My mother Mrs Joan Parker from Little Harrowden was 80 years old in May this year and we held a birthday party for her at Burton Latimer Recreation Centre. Her wish was for no presents but donations to help the heroes. Because I Guide in Finedon, I suggested we ask the Buffs for a donation for the raffle which we did. On the night and they were very generous donating lots of prizes. Altogether £900 was raised. Mother sent out thank you letters and had a lovely surprise today, the Buffs sending her £100 to make the amount up to £1000. Thank you to all their members and all the good work they do.

Are you able to help at the Flower Festival?

In order to ensure that the Flower Festival runs smoothly throughout the weekend we would very much appreciate your help with the following:

Refreshments Could you spare an hour or two to help with serving refreshments and washing up Please contact Jean Marlow on 680987 or Tracey Hawkes if you are able to help.

Stewards Stewards have a very important role at the festival as they are the first contact at the door for visitors. Two stewards are required on the door throughout the festival and this will be on a rota basis. There will be a rota on the notice board at the back of the church and if you are able to help, please place your name against a time convenient to you.

Donations Donations of refreshments, cakes, jams, marmalade and raffle prizes would be very much appreciated.

Teacher: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?

John: You told me to do it without using tables.

Teacher: Glenn, how do you spell 'crocodile?' Glenn: k-r-o-k-o-d-i-a-l' Teacher: No,, that's wrong Glenn: Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it. (I love this child)

Teacher: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water?

Page 14: AUGUST 2011

Donald: h i j k l m n o. Teacher: What are you talking about? Donald: Yesterday you said it's H to O.

Teacher: Winnie, name one important thing we have today that we didn't have ten years ago.

Winnie: Me!

Teacher: Glen, why do you always get so dirty? Glen: Well, I'm a lot closer to the ground than you are.

Teacher: Millie, give me a sentence starting with 'I' Millie: I is..

Teacher No, Millie.. Always say, 'I am.' Millie: All right. 'I am the ninth letter of the alphabet.' Teacher ‘Now, Simon, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?

Simon: No sir, I don't have to, my mum is a good cook.

Teacher: Clyde, your composition on 'my dog' is exactly the same as your brother's.. Did you copy his?

Clyde :No, sir. It's the same dog.

Teacher: ‘Harold, what do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested?’

Harold: A teacher How to get to Heaven

(from Yorkshire....) I was testing children in my Barnsley Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. I asked them ‘If I sold my house and my car, had a big jumble sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?’

‘No!’ the children answered. ‘If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the garden and kept everything tidy, would that get me to heaven?’

Again, the answer was ‘No!’

Page 15: AUGUST 2011

By now I was starting to smile. ‘Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave sweeties to all the children and loved my husband, would that get me into heaven?’

Again, they all answered ‘No!’ I was just bursting with pride for them. I continued: ‘Then how can I get into heaven?’ A six year old boy shouted:

‘Tha’s got t’ be chuffin’ dead’
