Chair’s Corner
I was privileged to join Scott Carter at the Arnold Palmer Golf Management and Century Golf annual partners’ meeting at Latrobe Country Club last week. Hosted by Arnold Palmer, it was a great experience as board chairs and general managers from clubs around the country had the opportunity to share their clubs’ status, challenges, opportunities, plans and programs. The common thread at virtually all clubs is the challenge of adding new members and retaining existing members. But like here at Thorntree, the future looks brighter as membership at most clubs has stabilized and is now on an upward trend. Which reminds me to remind you… this is a great time to bring your guest to the Club and introduce them to our many sports, social, and dining events -- as a “family-friendly” country club, we’re a great value for the whole family to enjoy.
Hope you and your family are taking advantage of the summer weather and spending some tan-time at our pools. Of course many of us are on the golf course and some are also enjoying tennis. Whatever you’re doing outdoors, remember to stay hydrated with plenty of water and/or sports drinks.
54 players enjoyed the MGA Championship tournament which took place July 10th and 11
th.
Congratulations to the overall gross champion, Michael Lord; and to overall net champion, Jody Reese. Other flight winners were Hardy Browder, John Tufts and Rick Mills.
The Junior Club Golf Championship was also held in July – Karsten Green, 12, and Jake Henderson, 8, won their age divisions. Congratulations!
Upcoming golf events in August include the Ladies Club Championship on August 7th and 8
th
and the Men’s Club Championship on August 13th – 15
th. Be sure to sign-up in the golf shop.
And don’t forget there’s a Junior Sports Camp being held Tuesday – Friday August 3rd
– 6th.
If your company, organization, church, school or family reunion is looking for a fun activity, they can sponsor a tournament at Thorntree. Contact the golf shop for to set a date.
Mark your calendar for Thursday August 12th
at 6pm – it’s “Cocktails with the Council” featuring complimentary appetizers, beer & wine, prizes, and socializing. Please bring a prospective member as your guest… it’s a great way to introduce them to your Club. Also if you’re a golfer, your guest can play complimentary golf on this special day and Friday August 27th! C139
Rhonda Whisenant, membership director is looking for your referrals… let her know of any friends, business or church associates that you think would be a prospect for membership… she’ll take it from there. Don’t forget -- there’s a special bonus if you sponsor the most new golf members: you win a free trip as a member of the Partners Championship golf team that goes to Florida. I look forward to seeing you at the Club – bring a prospective member as your guest!

The Help (Aug 5): Set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, this page-turner
focuses on white Southern households and the black domestic maids who
toiled in those households. The white characters range from ―politely rac-
ist‖ Junior Leaguers to matrons who openly despise and mistreat the very
maids who help them raise their children. Speaking primarily through three
voices (regal black maid Aibileen‘s, and sassy cook Minny‘s, as well as 21-
year-old Old Miss graduate Eugenia ―Skeeter‖ Phelan‘s), the author writes
of a room "full of cake-eating, Tab-drinking, cigarette-smoking women"
planning a fundraiser for the "Poor Starving Children of Africa.‖ Author
Kathryn Stockett doesn‘t hit us over the head with the ironies inherent in
these 1960‗s situations. She does, however, get her point across, all the
while portraying her characters - whether black or white - with insight and
humor. DreamWorks Studios recently announced a film version of the
"The Help.‖
Labor Day (Sept 2) : In a review of her coming-of-age book Labor Day,
author Joyce Maynard states that the idea for Labor Day came to her in a
dream. She wrote the book in 10 days, for she was eager to discover how
things would turn out for her characters. By Maynard‘s account, the book,
set in a small New Hampshire town in 1987, contains many of her ―own
obsessions: being a single mother, the loneliness of being a boy who is
trying to be the man of the family.‖ The story focuses on 13-year-old
Henry, whose chance encounter with an apparent drifter named Frank for-
ever changes Henry‘s life - and the life of Henry‘s mother Adele.
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet‘s Nest (Oct 7): Late Swedish writer Stieg
Larsson‘s final novel in his Millennium Trilogy is said by reviewers, once
again, to be an exhilarating demonstration of ―Larsson‘s mastery of the
unexpected.‖ Lisbeth Salander, the unorthodox young computer hacker
involved in a long-distance (online) relationship with publisher Michael
Blomkvist, lies in her hospital bed, recuperating from serious injuries she
received during events at the end of Larsson‘s previous novel. From this
hospital bed (where she spends most of the third novel), Lisbeth puts her
brilliant mind to clever use in outwitting the long arm of the Swedish Secu-
rity Service, her silent but most mortal enemy. The film version of Hor-
net‘s Nest enjoyed a popular European debut in November 2009.
