VPTechnical-DaveDexterThe Chapter’s first technical meeting of the

2006-2007 season is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to get back to the business of professional plumbing design. The September meeting will again be a lunch meeting at Barley’s Smokehouse & Brewpub. High Purity Water System Applications will be the topic. This should be an interesting topic for all. While it has limited applications, at some point in everyone’s career, we touch on this type of system.

As you will see from the “Meeting Schedule” included with this Newsletter, there are numerous opportunities for exciting topics to be discussed at our meetings this year. While Board continues to search for just the right topic, we welcome your suggestions and input. This Chapter and Society are about its members’ development and knowledge growth. Send us your ideas and suggestions for topics and seminars; every effort will be made to incorporate those ideas and suggestions.

As this is the first meeting of the new ASPE year, I hope to see all of our members in attendance. Everyone I have spoken with likes

the new “lunch” format and location. However, the Board is always looking to improve the meeting content and to find acceptable meeting locations within a reasonable cost. Again the membership’s suggestions are welcome and appreciated; send your comments or thoughts any time.

Remember, the ASPE Convention is just around the bend. This year’s convention will be in Tampa, Florida in late October. This convention looks like a great opportunity to improve one’s design skills and network with other members and non-members to your betterment and the betterment of the profession and ASPE. This is your Society, join the other members in Tampa and let your voice be heard. Your voting delegation along with other members will be there to represent your interests. However, it would be much better if you could attend. I hope to see a large number of the Central Ohio Chapter in attendance. Come join us for a great educational experience and an enjoyable social gathering; see you there.

Legislative-EricLemanThe Plumbing Ad Hoc Advisory Committee has

been very busy lately. As the State is considering the 2006 IPC as the basis of our next OPC, we all received a package of proposed revisions a few weeks ago. By the time you read this, the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee’s comments have already been presented to the BBS Code Committee at their August 22, 2006 meeting.

While it is the Board’s intent to “Ohio-ize” the IPC only as needed to meet Ohio laws, many of the proposed revisions were, in my opinion, attempts at “Ohio-izing” the IPC language. Let’s face it – other than a few extremes regarding climatic conditions, a plumbing system doesn’t know in what jurisdiction it is installed.

As always, more to follow. On August 0, 2006, Ohio EPA adopted a

final new rule for Design Flow Requirements for Treatment Works Sized for 00,000 gallons per day (gpd) or less. It is Ohio Administrative Code 3745-42-05, with an effective date of Nov , 2006. For

more information, please go to: http://www.epa.state.oh.us/dsw/rules/final_design_aug06.html.

The BASF "Better Home, Better Planet" house, located in Paterson, NJ, is now open for private tours. The BASF house is an acclaimed 2,900 SF dwelling designed as a prototype home of the future and residence for a local paraplegic boy and his family, constructed using elements of universal design and green concepts. Through June, the three-story project will serve as a design "clinic" for homeowners, builders, architects and government officials. The BASF house includes a special hoist installed in the boy's bedroom that runs on a ceiling-mounted track to the adjoining bathroom, which is equipped with a track and wheelchair accessible shower, provided by Best Bath Systems (Boise, ID). Alternate wheelchair entry to the shower is facilitated by a neoprene "water dam," a Best Bath feature that eliminates the need for a curb to keep water from flowing onto the bathroom floor. In addition, overall comfort is ensured through energy-efficient heating and cooling, ergonomically enhanced amenities and "smart" building controls. For more information, visit www.best-bath.com.

The ISH North America International Trade Show for Kitchen & Bath, Plumbing, Commercial/Industrial PVF, Heating and Air Conditioning is coming to Chicago Sept. 28-30, 2006.
