A MAN OF PRAYER

ST. JOHN MARIA VIANNEYReverend and dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, prayerfulgreetings to you in the Holy Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1. Man of God, man of the community

St. John Maria Vianney was born on 8th May 1786 in Franceand was ordained a priest on 13th August 1815. In 1818 hewas appointed parish priest of Ars, a small poor parish wherethe faithful were abandoning their faith practices. He realizedthat he had a hard work to do at Ars. He prayed and heplanned his pastoral ministries.

At the feet of the Eucharistic Lord: “More things arewrought by prayer than this world dreams of”. St. John MariaVianney became fully aware that without the Lord he coulddo nothing and with the Lord he could do everything (Cf.Jn. 15:15). He spent long hours at the feet of the Eucharistic

The Holy Father's Prayer Intentions for August 2016General: That sports may be an opportunity for friendlyencounters between peoples and may contribute to peace inthe world.

Mission: That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witnessto faith, honesty and love of neighbor.

ARCHBISHOP'S MESSAGE

224 Message

Lord, praying for the people entrusted to his pastoral charityand service. His devout prayers changed the hearts of his peoplewho renewed their faith practices.

At the Altar: St. John Maria Vianney celebrated the Holy Masswith great faith, fervour, piety and attention and prayed with hispeople and for his people. He kept the Eucharist at the centre ofhis life and ministries. From the Eucharist he got the necessaryinspiration and energy, strength and courage for his pastoralministries. He gathered the people around the altar and madethem a believing, praying and witnessing community.

At the Confessional: The sacrament of penance is thesacrament of divine mercy. St. John Maria Vianney saw theconfessional as the proper place where the faithful couldencounter the merciful Father. He sat at the confessional for manyhours, reconciling the people with God. Many people went toArs to make their confession to the holy priest.

At the houses of the faithful: Jesus was not only waitingfor the sinners to come to him (cf. Jn 4:5-42) but also he wasgoing to meet the sinners (cf. Mt 9:9; Lk 19: 1-10). Followingthe example of Christ, St. John Maria Vianney went in search ofthe people. He reqularly visited the families and prayed withthe people and for the people. He comforted the lonely andsupported the poor.

St. John Maria Vianney is a shining example to all of us priestsand religious:

♦ As priests we are called to be men of Prayer andteachers of prayer. Do we take our prayer life seriously?Do we take time and make efforts to prostrate ourselves atthe feet of the Eucharistic Lord, praying for our people? Arewe faithful to the Divine Office? The morning prayer andthe Evening prayer are the pillars of the liturgy of the Hours.

Do we honour the Blessed Virgin Mary by praying theRosary? Do we engage ourselves in mental prayer?

♦ As priests we are stewards of the mysteries of God inthe service of His people. Our people have the right to beassisted by us from the spiritual riches of the Church, especially by the word of God and the Sacraments.

♦ Do we seriously prepare ourselves for a worthy and fruitfulcelebration of the most holy Eucharist? Do we prepare wellfor the homily?

♦ Do we make ourselves available to the people forconfessions? In this jubilee year of mercy, let us sit at theconfessionals regularly and serve as instruments of divinemercy for our people. As priests and religious, we areexpected to make frequent and fruitful confessions.

♦ Personal knowledge of the concrete living conditions ofour people will help us to understand them properly and toserve them effectively. Do we make regular visits to ourfamilies?

♦ Our visits to families will bring peace and joy to the people.

♦ Veneration calls for imitation. Our veneration for St. JohnMaria Vianney is an invitation for us to imitate him in his lifeof prayer and dedication to pastoral ministries.

May Mary our beloved mother help us, priests and religious, tobe deeply prayerful and to be fully committed to our pastoralministries and services.

FROM THE DESK OF VICARS

Freedom Month

Let us thank the Risen Lord and our Beloved Country for awakeningthe people to journey towards total freedom, human dignity andreligious identity on the seventieth anniversary of Independence.

Instead of spending time and money for selfish motives every yearas a ritual, may we educate our people towards real freedom throughformal and non-formal education.

New Education Policy

Any and every policy that evolves for the integral way of life needto be based not exclusively on any government but on terminal valuesand the principles of our constitution. No hidden or open agenda ofimposing anything or anybody on the inborn freedom of every child

of God. When God Himself does not impose anything on anybodynobody has the right to impose. In a democracy from the grass-rootlevel policy will evolve and on national level coordinate and animateand go beyond the country to the world and nature. Now is theacceptable time for prophets to speak aloud through media andlead people towards awareness.

Tips to Toe

01. Black-Day: Deprived people were discriminated on the tenthof August. Church awakens the nation through “Black-Day”demonstration and prays to God to come to the rescue of His chosenones. It is not black-flag-day but only black-day. No black-flag-hoistingor wearing but building awareness through meetings, processionsand prayers.

02. World-Religion: Our country is secular which means to respectthe sacred in the secular without majority minority complex. NoReligion has any caste factor within itself for the spirit of religionhas no name or form. We as Christians within the religion neverplace before any caste, rite or ethnicity but only the transformedRisen Lord only. With caste-awareness, nobody can overcome thelimitations of caste. So focus on the human that is common to all,the Christian, who are all equal through baptism and theconsecrated who live for the glory of God and the well-being ofall. Therefore all the Christians, especially the clergy and the religiousdestroy the caste-awareness within the church and focus on human,Christian and consecrated only to journey towards the Reign of God.

Simple Celebrations:

Our life in our nation and the church is always filled with variouskinds and levels of celebrations. For us in particular marriage, feasts, functions and other celebrations are intimated, informed and invitedwith a variety of costly invitations based on unhealthy competitionand prestige which are disposed easily and fast into the dustbin. Itcould be very simple with no pictures, human and divine, which we

tear and throw. Instead of being influenced by consumerism let usbe alert and awake to make it simple and grand.

For the parochial feasts we invite a lot of priests etc. to celebrate inthe morning, evening and at other moments with fireworks etc. Howmuch money we have to share with all at the expense of the commonfund for the poor. Not only main stations but also sub-stations, road-side, grottoes etc. more than external celebrations what is expectedis the inner celebration of joy, peace, unity etc. we could simplifyoutside and focus on the inside journey of faith.

Analysis and Synthesis

Based on individuality and uniqueness we have too many divisionsin our human and Christian life. Too many departments, commission, councils, committees, groups, associations etc. etc.without any efficient coordination at the diocesan, regional andnational levels which is really unhealthy and unbecoming for theimage of the church and the Reign of God. In multiple commissionsand boards the ego plays a dominant role than the uniqueness. Itbecomes a way of life style for many to thrive and shine rather thanthe image of Jesus Christ. There is no interdisciplinary approach information, research studies and annual gatherings with lot of fundsspent on ourselves. Divide and rule becomes a way of life and study. We need to journey from the mind to the heart, from religion tospirituality. Where there is no spirituality there is no unity in theperson and the community.

Split theology has made us split persons. More than the Word theSpirit is important. The Spirit of Triune God has to unite everyoneof us, the church and the humanity. It is easy to know, to study, tospeak, to preach about God, but we need to experience God andJesus Christ. Experience matters much more than any other thing. It is in this way the church can be renewed now and always. Aspastors dhyana alone will help us to be renewed. Fidelity and loyaltyto daily dhyana is a means to Jesus-experience.

Asian Chair in Christianity

Our beloved MEP Society helped us to have the Asian Chair inChristianity in Pondicherry University. It is high time that we payour attention to this department and revive the chair under theleadership of our Archbishop and Fr. Jonas, in-charge. Lay-people,brothers, sisters and priests are highly recommended to do theirstudies as an on-going formation, insertion into the secular university, ecumenical, inter-religious. Persons in charge need to disturb thecomfortable towards this goal. May the month of freedom bring newlife to all of us.

VOICE FROM METROPOLITAN MATRIMONIAL TRIBUNAL - 70

Pastoral Note on marrying those close relations why asan impediment of consanguinity exists (canon 1091):

A. Science and technology gives one more reason to avoidconsanguineous marriages

A body of evidence shows that children born out of consanguineousmarriages suffer from several congenital problems. This is particularlyso in the case of children born out of union involving first cousins. The problem in close relative marriages surfaces when a personcarries a defect in any of the genes associated with some form ofdisease and marries a person from the same kindred who also sharesthe defect. The child inherits two copies of this faulty gene, andthus has the disease

Now, a study published recently in the journal Cytogenetic andGenome Research reports the presence of a ring chromosome in atwo-year-old child of a first-cousin marriage. The child died whenhe was seven years old. Ring chromosomes are rare unbalancedchromosomal abnormalities that occur in about in 50,000 foetuses, says the paper. Ring chromosomes occur when the tips of thechromosome are broken at both ends followed by fusion of theseends or telomere-telomere fusion of the chromosome without theloss of genetic material.

The child also had facial dysmorphic features including low-set earsand upward slanting eyes, microcephaly, suffered from seizures andhad mild spasticity. Karyotyping revealed that different chromosomalabnormalities were present in differing proportions.

Detailed study of the ring chromosome 9 revealed gene loss due todeletion of a particular segment of the chromosome. However, theloss was seen in only one arm of the abnormal chromosome. (Ref.The Hindu, Monday, June 20, 2016, Education Plus, p.2)

“Consanguinity is the blood relationship between persons whodescend, either legitimately or illegitimately, from a common ancestor.Societies and legal systems have a prohibition on marriage betweenclose blood relatives; the canon law is no exception. The reasonsfor the prohibition are the possible genetic consequences of such aunion and a desire to protect the sanctity of the family. Theimpediment extends to all degrees of the direct line and as far as thefourth degree in the collateral line. In the collateral line, therefore, for most practical purposes the impediment extends as far as firstcousins. Consanguinity in any degree of the direct line a divine lawimpediment and that consanguinity in the third and fourth degreesof the collateral line is an ecclesiastical law impediment. Marriage isnever permitted if there is any doubt as to whether the parties arerelated by consanguinity in any degree of the direct line or the seconddegree of the collateral line.” (Ref: Commentaries of the Code ofCanon Law 1983).

B. Legitimate marriage cannot be dissolved: “Matrimonyis a Sacrament and therefore

Subject to the Spouse of Christ” (Gregory XVI, by FrancescoPodesti Pinacoteca Civica, Ancona, Italy.)

The honorable union of Christians, which Paul calls a greatSacrament in Christ and the Church (cf. Eph. 5:32; Heb. 13:4),demands our shared concern lest anything, based on erroneousconcepts, contrary to its sanctity and indissolubility is proposed. Our predecessor of happy memory, Pius VIII, has already recalledthis to you insistently in his letters on the subject.

However, the onslaughts of the adversaries grow without ceasing. All the people, therefore, must be taught that a marriage rightlyentered upon cannot be dissolved; by the will of God, the spousesjoined in matrimony form a perpetual companionship, with linksthat are so binding that they are only loosed by death.

Recalling that Matrimony is a Sacrament and therefore subject tothe Spouse of Christ, let them consider and observe the laws of theChurch concerning it. They should render them holy and scrupulousobedience, for upon the fulfillment of these laws depends the efficacy, strength and virtue of the conjugal union.

Let them take care lest for any reason they permit that which is anobstruction to the teachings of the sacred canons or the decrees ofthe councils. They should be well aware that those marriages willinevitable have an unhappy end which are entered upon contraryto the discipline of the Church or without God’s favour or becauseof concupiscence alone. With no thought of the Sacrament and ofthe mysteries signified by it. (cf. Gregory XVI, Excerpts from theEncyclical Mirari vos, 15/8/1832, Translation: Heralds of the Gospel,June 2016, p.7).

C. In common, many Catholics are ready to obey the laws of theChurch and the code of canon law for the common good of everyone. But few Catholics are always look for loop holes and try tobend laws for their convenience or break the law and finally theconsequences hit them very badly. They think that they havesucceeded or bypassed the formalities by their influence and powerat that moment, but the failure and the guilt conscience follows forthe wrong they do by their negative motives and side effects. Whenthey live already in disorder or illegal union, all the more it affectstheir own sons and daughters for any new union. “Keep the Rulesand the Rules will Keep you” is the best policy instead of looking forother means to achieve the end. When the means are proper andgood, the results are always excellent.

Doctor's MessageGastric Obstruction – Causes, Symptoms Treatments

Continues from previous issue...What happens when your gastrointestinal system is obstructed?

When the small intestine is blocked, it will begin contracting in orderto move its content beyond the obstruction, which can lead to frequentdiarrhoea. In later stages, it will become less effective, causing a buildupof water and electrolytes that can lead to dehydration.

The obstruction will also create pressure on the intestinal walls, andif left untreated – will only get worse. This can lead to venous drainageobstruction, a rising of the diaphragm, and a suppression of the lungs’function.

Patients lose their ability to pass feces and gasses along the intestine, causing swelling and increasing stomach pains. The large intestine willexpand due to the buildup of bacterium, liquids, feces and gasses.Which symptoms can indicate an obstruction?

Symptoms can be evidence of obstruction caused be stomachcramping or phytobezoars. Once you notice these symptoms, it isrecommended that you pay a visit to your family doctor, to evaluatethe nature of the obstruction. Not all symptoms may appear, but theywill appear in these general groups:Constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, lethargy and swelling.

Headaches, memory loss, blurred vision. Burning sensation in theupper digestive system.

Weight gain, lack of energy and indigestion. Ulcers in the stomachand Duodenum, ulcerative colitis and stomach inflammation. Urinarytract infections and inflammation of the kidneys.

Constant colds, allergies, joint pains and chronic diseases. The mostbasic treatment is hooking the patient up to an IV, which can only beperformed by a doctor. In some cases, the obstructions can be relievedby using a nasogastric tube, and in severe cases, an operation will berequired. Prevention:

The best way to unblock a phytobezoar obstruction is by eatingfood that is high in protein and low in fiber. Once the blockage isgone, follow these dietary tips to heal and prevent reoccurrences.

Beverages: It is advised that you keep your body well hydrated.Drink fruit-shakes, water, and sports drinks that are rich in electrolytes.Avoid high-fat dairy.

Dairy: Stick to low-fat or fat-free products.Grains and bread: Fiber from whole grain tends to slow down the

digestive process. Focus on plain white bread, pasta, and regular grain.Fruits and vegetables: Boiled or canned fruits and vegetables are

the way to go. Avoid eating the skin. Watermelon, melons, and bananascan be consumed fresh. Avoid high-fiber fruits and vegetables.

Meat and meat substitutes: Protein is essential to the healing process.Stick to skinless chicken or turkey meat. Other kinds of lean meat, such as fish, eggs and tofu are also good.

Other: Avoid fried foods and use as little butter as possible. Boiledor steamed foods are the most recommended. Minimize the use ofseasoning and fatty sauces and dressings.
