Vacation Bible School 2015
Vacation Bible School will be held Monday, August 3-
Friday, August 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. It is open to
children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall through
those who will be going into the 6th grade (Middle School) in
the fall.
This year’s theme is Everest, Conquering Challenges with
God’s Mighty Power. Each day children will celebrate and
sing at Base Camp and at the Summit Celebration. They will
learn that God has the power to provide, that God has the power
to comfort, that God has the power to heal, that God has the
power to forgive, and that God has the power to love us forever.
Along the way from base camp to the summit celebration, chil-
dren will learn about the prophet Elijah at the Bible Expedition,
play outdoors at the Glacier Games, share in some yummy
Mountaintop Treats, learn how God provides, comforts and
heals at Kidvid Cinema and exercise their imaginations at
Imagination Station.
Our mission project this year is to collect funds for Opera-
tion Kid-to-Kid to purchase Thai-language Bibles for children
in Thailand. $4.00 will purchase one Bible. We are inviting the
entire church to participate in this project and we will continue
collecting funds throughout the month of August. In past years
you have all been very generous in providing such things as
malaria nets and clean water for children through Operation
Kid-to-Kid. Please help us again!
Reminder !!! DWM/CWF Day
Group No Meetings scheduled
for July and August. Will resume
meeting in September.
Reynolds Price (1933-2011) was a distin-
guished author, poet, and longtime profes-
sor at Duke University whose spiritual re-
flections influenced much of his writing.
Our church library has several of his works;
the most recent addition to our collection is A Palpable God:
Thirty Stories translated from the Bible. The stories are from
both Old and New Testaments, including all of Mark's gospel.
Although Mark gets 43 pages, most of the other stories are one
or two pages. Although the 'translator' does not claim an in-
depth knowledge of either Hebrew or Greek, he has researched
the various translations through the ages and his gifts as a novel-
ist make these Bible stories what one reviewer calls 'required
reading.' You will find Reynolds Price's works in the bookcase
opposite the library door on the shelf labeled "Worth Noting." Marilyn Cardwell, Librarian

Youthful Information . . . . . Well, the summer is coming to an end, and the school year will once again soon be upon us. This past month has been
quite eventful for the Youth! From July 13th through July 18th, six of our Youth and two adults ventured to Black Moun-
tain, NC, to participate in Christmount’s Work Camp experience. All had a wonderful time, learned a lot, and worked
hard! As a result, Christmount is cleaner, prettier, and more financially accessible than ever to those who would otherwise
be unable to afford it. In addition to Work Camp, the Youth have been actively involved in Wednesday night fellowship
and Summer Sunday Movie Nights, both at 6pm in Taylor Hall. Speaking of which, Summer Sunday Movie Nights will
continue in August up to the start of the school year, with titles such as The Emperor’s New Groove, Hook, Despicable
Me, and Holes. Youth Group will continue on Wednesday nights as well with food, fun, and fellowship. As far as major
events go, the Youth will be having a pool party at Lou Morris’ house (2425 Greenwich Rd) on Wednesday, August 5th,
at 6:30pm after our usual meal at the church. Then, on August 19th, we will be helping to wash windows around the
church. We will officially return to our regularly-scheduled Youth Group activities on August 26th, with food, a game,
and a Bible study every Wednesday between 6 and 7:30pm. If you would like any additional information on any of the
above events, or if you are not on the Youth email list and would like to be, please email Chris Rinker at
. . . . . . . . From the desk of Chris Rinker.

Grace and Peace to you all!
I cannot believe it is already August! It seems like this summer has just flown by. But, while I do enjoy all the activi-
ties of summer, I am looking forward to cooler temperatures in our neck of the woods.
We have enjoyed a great summer here at FCC filled with joyful worship, community outreach, and deepening fellow-
ship with our summer bible study on Wednesday nights. I have heard nothing but great things from you all about our
Wednesday night activities and the sense of fellowship and connectedness that have resulted. And I have also heard
that many of you are missing the small group experience we enjoyed this past Lent.
As we enter into the dog days of summer and the beginning of fall, your church leaders are working hard to plan a
revival of our small group discussions centered on gifts of the Spirit.
Some of you may know all about spiritual gifts while for some this may be something of a new concept. Well, just to
refresh your collective memory, spiritual gifts are those qualities and abilities graced to us all by the one who created
us. Scripturally, these gifts include prophecy, healing, teaching, exhortation (encouragement), giving, leadership, com-
passion, wisdom, knowledge, and discernment among others. Moreover, these gifts do not exist for themselves or by
themselves but rather exist to give glory to God as well as for the betterment and furtherance of God’s covenant peo-
ple. Indeed, I think it is fair to say that within all of us, there is a deep desire to know God and ourselves in deep, pow-
erful, and transformative ways. Our collective work on spiritual gifts is designed with this goal in mind. On Wednes-
day, September 2nd we will meet as a congregation to share a meal with each other and organize ourselves for this im-
portant work. I hope you all can be a part of this enriching experience as we prayerfully discern who we are and who
God is calling us to be.
However, before this, we will be celebrating the end of the summer with our 2nd annual block party and school suply
drive on Saturday, August 22nd. I hope you all can come and bring friends as well as meet our neighbors.
Peace, Ryan
