August 15, 2012

Dear Parishioners,

When school opens at the end of the August, St. Edward School in Stafford Springs will open its doors for its 138th year as one of thirteen elementary schools in the Diocese of Norwich. Just four and a half years ago, when I began serving as principal of St. Edward’s, there were 22 diocesan elementary schools. Certainly the rate at which we are losing our Catholic schools is both alarming and heartbreaking. When you consider the outstanding academic achievements of our students, the difference our students make in our communities, and, most importantly, the way our schools provide a foundation for faith and values in our ever-changing world, there is much at stake. Last year, St. Edward School students made numerous headlines for academic and athletic achievements, served 500+ meals at our local soup kitchen, raised funds for the tuition of a child in Haiti, and were recognized by the military for support given. Many souls were touched by the love and spirit of St. Edward School. Perhaps some of our greatest excitement was witnessing the entrance of three of our older students into the Catholic faith. Drawn by example and love, these three students chose to make their Profession of Faith, their First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion in our midst. Two others who had been baptized, but had not received Reconciliation and Holy Communion, joyfully received those Sacraments before our school community as well. Seeing the seeds of our Faith blossom in our students was life-giving and spirit-filling … Catholic education making a difference in a most life-changing way! It is no wonder why the New England Association of Schools and Colleges chose to award St. Edward School “exemplary” status in the areas of Mission, Program (curricular and extracurricular), and Experience of the Student.

I write to you today to ask for your prayerful support of St. Edward School and

of Catholic education in our diocese. If you have thought of Catholic education for your child, grandchild, niece, or nephew – now is the time! If you are able to sponsor a child’s tuition, there are many families who have expressed their desire for a Catholic education, but simply cannot finance it. If you are able to make a donation to our annual appeal this year or take part in any of our many engaging fundraisers, please consider doing so. As always, your prayers for our beloved school are most appreciated. Acts as simple as clipping General Mills Box Tops for Education or collecting ink cartridges for recycling help our school – sometimes pennies at a time … but it all helps. Please know that on behalf of our faculty and staff, we will work tirelessly to help secure the tradition of excellence for which St. Edward School is renowned so that many more of God’s children may receive the benefit of a Catholic elementary education.

If you would like to know more about St. Edward School or how you can help, please call or e-mail using the contact information above. Thank you and may God bless you!

In His Love, MaryAnne Pelletier, ‘81 Principal
