20th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)

For the past three issues we have raised awareness on the importance of the Convent of the Parish of Jaro. We have looked into the mind of the Church which reiterates that the convent should be seen both as a symbol and a fact of the extraordinary presence of the parish priest and his assistant priests in the parish. And yet, we know for a fact, also, that this is not just where the priests reside or where their presence is felt and can be readily looked for. We have also explored, especially as we prod and continue to recall our experiences in that the old convent, what it meant for us, and perhaps, how it has affected our lives today. This Kombento has been the center of our continuing education for the faith and our spiritual formation as parishioners. It was a venue for meetings and get-togethers of the religious organizations and ministries of the Parish. It was the center where our remembrances are kept, where records and files from our most distant ancestors down to the present day were secured. It was also the place where every Candle Light was born and has continued for the past 22 years, where our school and barangay catechists prepared and were prepared, where parish pastoral workers were assembled and recharged for their volunteer work in our barangays and MKKs, where indigents get a little hope, where the sick who could not afford were cared for free, where the burdened sought counsel, where our parish scholars saw a brighter future, where married love was deepened, where the young got their first experience of belonging to a greater family - the Parish, where

some vocations to the priesthood and the religious life were born and nourished. We were all part of that Kombento! The place may not have much in terms of conveniences and rich furnishings but I am sure that it has enriched us deeply in so many ways. We have done our best to repair what we could, to suffer where we could, so that it could still serve us a little longer, and still a little longer each time. But as Engineer Nilo Jardeleza told us in one meeting, Father, I am sorry to tell you that the Jaro convent is no longer standing on sturdy pillars or hanging on tough beams. It is standing and hanging on faith alone and it is a miracle that it has not yet collapsed. So there it is. Now, it has to go. And this is where we all come in.

We have delved into knowing the nuances of the words convent, rectory and parochial house with the help of the article of Msgr. Gene, our Parish Priest. We hope that we have discovered the meaning and the value of what we are doing and will be doing in the days and months ahead. Through the Open House three Sundays ago, we have seen for ourselves the real situation of our convent. The faithful generously shared their personal understanding of what the convent is and their suggestions for the over-all plan of the construction project. All the suggestions are deemed valuable that we have tried to integrate them in the floor plan, both in the ground and second floor.

Now, whats next? In this Sundays issue of our Candle Light, the scheme of contribution or donation is being presented to us. We hope to give you an idea on how you can share monetarily for this project as some of us may be wondering on how they can help. As in the article of Fr. Neil, there are many ways that we can share our resources for this project. All of these possibilities are made in such a way that we are still faithful to our vision of a participatory Church. So all of us, whatever our social status in life is, can still give, can still share and can still offer. What is important, after all, is that our giving comes from the heart that our offering is accompanied with love and sacrifice. We remember the widow in the Gospel. Even though the last penny that she had in her pocket could still be very helpful for her

family, she offered it to the Lord in the Temple. With this, the Lord is was so much pleased. Jesus admired the generosity of the widow. How do we give? Do we share substantially or do we give from our surplus? A real act of giving is a giving borne out of sacrifice. Give therefore not just from your abundance but from your substance, for God, who cannot be outdone in generosity, will reward our selflessness a hundredfold. A few years ago, our Cathedral Church was repaired and restored. We know that we made this project possible because of our support and cooperation. And now, we are challenged once again to manifest that same generosity or to be even more generous, so that in the soonest time possible, we shall have a new home a home that testifies to our selflessness and unity.

The Jaro Convento is a memorable place for me, a true-blooded Jarea. It is like home to me because of past and present parish priests who made me so welcomed. Monsignor Sin scheduled a special day for the confirmation of my children and the baptism of my youngest child. Monsignor Piamonte was a father and brother figure to me and my siblings. He shared too much of himself to all parishioners. He served coffee and pan de sal to parishioners and non-parishioners. Monsignor Gamboa has a compassionate heart. He buys things for the convent to make it livable. We shared our Christmas tree and decors during Christmas time. A visiting priest commented hed make a good dcor out of me because I looked like a ball. Later, the terrace looked like a beautiful garden full of plants as Monsignor Gerry asked for. Fond Memories at Jaro Convent...

Our convent was a comforting refugeto natures wrath, braveness and forceviolent tremors, breathtaking winds and biting raindeadly floods rushing from the mountains to the plains.Our convent saw glorious dayswhen Pope John Paul II visited our placeand its son Cardinal Sin became instrumentalto the EDSA revolution that decimated the reigning dictatorial.

Now, our convent is an ailing edificeshrunken and forlorn yet still filled with grace,trembling under the burden of our weightwhenever we hurry to and fro and fret.Now, our convent needs our attentionbecause it shall be closed for massive restorationit pleads for our patience as well as our cooperationand also spiritual and material contribution.

Filipino Knights of Columbus Honored for Culture of Life ActivitiesORLANDO, Fla, August 14, 2014Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council 12405 in San Mateo, Rizal, Luzon, was honored with the International Service Award for Culture of Life Activities at the Knights 132nd international convention for its pro-life activities.On March 25, wishing to commemorate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord and to extend help to others, the council spent the day offering free ultrasounds, food and spiritual assistance to financially unstable pregnant mothers.Seventy-nine women, including 23 teenagers, received the councils services. In addition to the medical services, the council provided meals for the women and the family members who accompanied them.In the months since the event, the council has continued to follow up with the attendees and has provided additional services for the women. The council took particular care of the youngest participant, a 15-year-old who gave birth to her child in April.

They are working on their own; applying ideas which they feel are in conformity with any situation.Our learning institutions are now engaged in the process of community building, physically and intellectually, morally, and spiritually. They are working

on their own! The school officials, the teachers, the students, the parents, they join hands in making our community a beautiful and an exemplary place to live in.Aside from the required subjects, the students are given extra-curricular activities to develop their intellect, their ambition, their physique, and most of all their character and their community relationship.

There is a school which has this theme for the oratorical competition:A Call Siege Against Moral Degeneration: Youth Participation in Leadership, Sports, and Environmental Awareness.In another school:For Binalaybay they have this theme: Kalamidad Pagahandaan; Gutom kag Malnutrisyon, Agapan.Still, in another educational institution: Buwan ng Wika: Theme: Wikang Pagkakaisa.These three themes are trumpet calls for brotherhood, unity, and peace.How many millions of students do we have from elementary to college? As they go out of the classrooms to prove their ability, their knowledge and their sincerity in making the Philippines a model country, though our nation is only a speck of the world on the map, it will prove that all of us are brothers in the Fatherhood of God.Let us help our students drain the

dirty waters of selfish ambition and personal interests. Let us help them climb the mountain of attaining wisdom which embraces the beauty of community building through beautiful communication and Christian relationship.Look beyond tomorrow. Prepare for hunger, for sickness, for natural calamities. Look for something pretty every day (the beauty of character).Let us recall some lines from Henry Wadsworth Longfellows Psalm of Life:In lifes broad field of battle, in the bivouac of lifeBe not like dumb-driven cattle, be a hero in the strife.Not enjoyment, not in sorrow, is our destined end or wayGot to find that each tomorrow find us farther than today.So? Faith is necessary for salvation, actually the beginning. For without faith it is impossible to please God, as no one draws near to God without first believing that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him earnestly (Hebrew 11:6).Faith in its broadest sense is a central reality in human life. Accepting the word of others (pagpati), readily obeying directives (pagsunod), entrusting our welfare to doctors, teachers, civic leaders and even cooks and drivers (pagsalig) are signs of faith without such basic human faith believing, accepting, obeying and personal entrusting, life would somewhat be impossible.But these pagpati, pagsunod and pagsalig in human beings (human faith) do not bring salvation because only faith in God (divine faith) which is grounded in His Own revelation through His Word, words and deeds in Salvation History is

salvific.The Gospel today speaks of the woman, a Canaanite who knows that not belonging to the tribe of Israel, she has no right to talk to Jesus, a Jew, much more to ask His help. But because of her faith in His healing power, she did approach Him due to her desperate need, the cure of her daughter. Despite Jesus initial blunt response

Persistent Faithto her plea, she forgot about herself. This selfishness made her a strong woman to persistently show her faith in the power of Jesus . Because she loved her daughter that much, Jesus was won over. He granted the request of the mother who had suffered for love.We have to know that faith in Jesus touches every part of our being: our minds (believing), our wills (doing), and our hearts (trusting). Faith is believing when my personal knowledge of Jesus is, He is my Lord and my God, thus I have to submit to His power. It is doing when what I believe is translated into witnessing through loving service especially to the needy. Thus, I have to tell Jesus what my neighbors need. It is entrusting when I put all my needs into the hands of Jesus no matter what happens, thus I have to continuously or persistently ask His favor until I receive His response. All these are clearly manifested by the Canaanite woman in the Gospel today.Many of our MKK members expressed in their faith sharing activities how thankful they are as what theyd been praying for were granted. But there are also some who vocally expressed their feeling that maybe God doesnt love them or asked natutulog ba ang Dios? because what they had been praying for is never granted. But when they learned and accepted the truth that God always answers our prayers by either; Yes, Here is a better one, or Wait, this is not yet the right time, the doubting Thomases smiled nodding their heads.We have to remember, God already knows our needs. Just have a persistent faith and you will have the great surprise in your life. Why? All things are possible for one who believes (Mark 9:23).

Family and Life Regional Conference -

a Re-Awakening Education

Minis tr yThe Archdiocesan Director on the Commission on Family Life, Fr. Randy Doromal, initiated the Regional Conference on Family and Life at Iloilo Grand Hotel last July 25-26, 2014. The theme of the conference was: We choose to be Brave, called to be Fighters for the Faith and Sent Forth as Warriors for Life.Our Parish Priest, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Higinio C. Velarde, and Education Ministry Director, Fr. Joenick S. Terrritorio, sent two delegates to the said conference. There were other delegates from Jaro, Kalibo, Roxas, Antique, Taytay, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Kabankalan, San Carlos and Romblon. There were more than 200 participants who attended the said assembly.The conference started with a concelebrated Holy Mass with His Excellency, Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo, Archbishop of Jaro as the main celebrant.The speakers included die-hard Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer and Dr. Dolores Octaviano, Pro-life Physicians, Hon. Cong. Lito Atienza, Pro-life for all time politician, priests, religious and laymen with Dr. Amelita DayritGo, National President, Sangguniang Laiko nga Pilipinas.Among the topics discussed were RH Law, Divorce Bill, the Hard Truth about vaccine, the Prolife War Zone, and the Laity: Who are We? Todays Urgent Challenges for the Church and the country.The speakers exhorted the participants to pray harder for: the enlightenment, guidance and faithfulness of our law

makers, government officials, Church leaders, and laity to promote the Culture of Life instead of abortion, contraception, and euthanasia; Unity with God-driven purpose in life rather than harmful competition; Permanence, indissolubility and sanctity

of marriage between man and woman in place of divorce and same sex union; and Responsible parenting and family solidarity instead of fleeting and self-seeking ambition.An occasion like this gave us deeper and clearer insights on our responsibilities and duties to our neighbor especially that neighbor who has less in life materially and spiritually; to respect his worth and dignity, his life and existence from fertilization to senility; to be aware of the immortality of his human soul; to realize the real purpose and meaning of life; and to love, honor and praise God for the gift of human life and all of His creations.The conference ended with a concelebrated Mass presided by Fr. Randy Doromal as main celebrant.
