Welcome, guests! God’s love welcomes you—no matter who you are or where you come

from— and so do we. We believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect

life, innocent death, and triumphant resurrection he saves all sinners even without our help. Jesus

Christ makes us special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible,

God’s authentic message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time guest or a

curious observer with little religious background, we are delighted to share our worship with you.

Please come back and worship with us again.

DIVINE SERVICE II WITH HOLY COMMUNION

HYMN

INVOCATION

[We invoke, that is, call upon the name of the Triune God to be with us this morning. The name of the

Triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms]

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son ╬ and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN

M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,

For sins of habit and sins of choice,

For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,

You should cast me away from your presence forever.

O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

ABSOLUTION

[The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the

sins of penitent sinners” (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23]

M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in

Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

LORD, HAVE MERCY

[Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses

in the Christian church.]

M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sus-

tain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost may be

brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we many not lose the hope of heaven as we

await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you.

C: Amen.

GLORY BE TO GOD Sung to the tune of hymn 323 Christian Worship All glory be to God on high!

Your name, O Lord, we glorify;

We praise you for your peace and grace,

Your favor toward our fallen race

Our grateful thanks to you we bring,

For your great glory, heav’nly King,

For all, O Father, you have done

Through Jesus Christ, your only Son

O Lamb of God, to you we pray.

You take all human sin away.

Have mercy, Lord; receive our prayer;

From God’s right hand, your mercy share

You, Christ, are holy—Lord alone;

The Father’s glory you made known.

We by your Spirit sing again:

“All glory be to God!” Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

[The Prayer of the Day compliments the theme of the day.]

C: O Lord, our God, govern the nations on earth and direct the affairs of this world so that

your Church may worship you in peace and joy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

FIRST READING Exodus 3:1-15

The LORD proclaims his name: I AM

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led

the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the

angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though

the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange

sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,

God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”

5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are stand-

ing is holy ground.” 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of

Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying

out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come

down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a

good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites,

Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me,

and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to

Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of

Egypt?” 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have

sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers

has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God

said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to

you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the

God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’

“This is my name forever,

the name you shall call me

from generation to generation.

THE WORD

[Like Mary, we sit at the feet of Jesus to hear his Word (Luke 10:39).]

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 7:7-14

Suffer for the gospel. Guard the faith that was given to you.

7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me

in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not

because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was giv-

en us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the ap-

pearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to

light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teach-

er. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I

have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that

day.

13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Je-

sus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit

who lives in us.

[It has been a tradition in the Christian church to stand for the reading of the

gospel for the past 2,000 years. Just as subjects rise when a king speaks,

we rise out of respect for the words of our King.]

Please stand

M: The Gospel according to Matthew chapter 10.

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

GOSPEL Matthew 10:26-33

Boldly confess Christ and do not be afraid.

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hid-

den that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whis-

pered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot

kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two

sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30

And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more

than many sparrows.

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

SERMON based on Matthew 10:26-33

When confessing, do not be afraid

NICENE CREED

[Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity.]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully hu-man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13)

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on

earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those

who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom,

the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy

Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has called us to be

his own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting righteous-

ness, innocence, and blessedness. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven,

we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus) Sung to the tune of CW130

O holy, holy, holy

Lord God of pow’r and might,

Your glory, earth and heaven In countless ways recite.

Hosanna! Come and save us, Lord God of hosts on high,

And in your grace and mercy Receive our fervent cry.

Hosanna in the highest! How truly blest is he

Who in God’s name is coming To set his people free!

He comes to bring salvation

And with his blood outpoured,

Deliver us from bondage— Hosanna, mighty Lord!

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks,

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for

you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is

my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this,

whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

O Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, assured: For I have seen your promised Incarnate, saving Word— A Light that will enlighten all gloom where Gentiles dwell; The brilliant, crowning glory of those in Israel!

PRAYER M: We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet that you have given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit help us to live as your holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.
