Dear AVMA Executive Committee,

During the review of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture's (AAVA) Resolution

(Resolution 14-2013) for admission as an AVMA affiliate organization, there was discussion

regarding claims that AAVA would exclude some members who have "successfully completed"

one specific foundation course in veterinary acupuncture from running for office in AAVA. This

argument was used to suggest that AAVA does not represent all veterinary acupuncturists that

practice in the United States. Article 1, Section 1 of the AAVA by-laws state that Credentialed

members must have "successfully completed an AAVA approved veterinary acupuncture course

or an equivalent program in Traditional Chinese Medicine andlor acupuncture." This allows for

any approved veterinary or human acupuncture course as well as Traditional Chinese Medical

course. The clause designating "approved" is present so that AAVA may review an unknown

course and ensure it is more than a cursory course such as a weekend session. We have included

Board communications from 2004 that indicates a policy that allows "Credentialed" ("Active" in

2004) membership to those successfully completing the Tufts University,

International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, Chi Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and

the Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians. We believe this debate about AAVA being

discriminatory or exclusionary was all a misunderstanding by individuals not involved with the

AAVA and therefore not familiar with the requirements for membership.

Additionally, please find an attached copy of an email communication with the Medical

Acupuncture for Veterinarians (MAV) office inviting anyone associated with the course to

submit a proposal for a presentation at the joint AAVA and International Veterinary

Acupuncture Society Congress this year. The Congress program committee chair personally

contacted and arranged for Bonnie Wright, DVM, Diplomate American College of

Anesthesiologists, an MAV instructor, to be the keynote speaker in the 2013 Congress. Our

programs include Traditional Chinese Medicine based acupuncture, Traditional Asian Medicine,

and neurophysiology based acupuncture. AAVA has a complete member spectrum of

acupuncture philosophies and neither discourages nor discriminates between them.

And as a fmal note, the AAVA Board entrusted Dr. Mili Bass, a graduate of the Colorado State

Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians acupuncture foundation course, to represent AAVA at

Reference Committee 1 in July where our Resolution 14-2013 was reviewed. And Dr. Tim Holt,

another graduate of the Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians and instructor for that course, is a

current AAVA Board member.

The AAVA Board requests that Resolution 14-2013 be resubmitted with the AVMA House of

Delegates as was approved by the AVMA Executive Board and the House Advisory Committee

this June.

Annual International Conference on Veterinary Acupuncture

May 15-18, 2013

The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture and the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) arepleased to announce a jointly sponsored International Conference on Veterinary Acupuncture.

This AAVA-IV AS event will be held at the Hotel Monteleone located in the heart of the French Quarter. Guests needonly step outside to discover shop after shop of fabulous European antiques, estate jewelry, Oriental rugs, art andantiquities from around the world. With Bourbon Street just one block way, we will be within walking distance ofexciting night life where Mardi Gras is a state of mind and jazz is king.

We are pleased to invite clinicians and other professionals to submit abstracts of a presentation for our 2013Conference. Papers selected will be presented by the Author and printed in the 2013 Proceedings Book of the event.

Abstracts must be typewritten in English, double-spaced and should not exceed a single page of 8.5" x 11" paper (A4)with 1" margins (2.5 cm). You are encouraged to send your abstracts by email. Please format the abstract in aMicrosoft Word document and send it as an attached document identified as "2013 AAVAlIVAS ABSTRACT" in theemail subject line.

Curriculum Vitae for each author must accompany the abstract. Abstracts submitted without this information will not beconsidered.

The deadline for submission is May 1, 2012.

The AAVAlIVAS Program Committee has determined the following topics to be the focus of 2013 Conference;

1. Acupuncture in the ICU

2. Designing and conducting clinical trials3. Herb-drug interactions, as well on how to assess and choose quality herbs for your patient4. Sports medicine and rehabilitation5. Feline medicine

Other acupuncture, acupuncture related and Chinese medical therapy articles will be considered, including Chineseherbal medicine, food therapy and Chinese Tui-Na therapies. There is also an opportunity to present posters and WetLabs. If you are interested in presenting a Wet Lab, either equine or small animal, please submit your ideas.

Keynote Lecturers (lectures of 4 hours or more) will receive honoraria and travel expenses. Primary authors ofselected papers of less than 4 hours of lecture will receive an hourly honoraria rate. Wet lab instructors will alsoreceive an hourly honoraria rate. The hourly honoraria rate is $300 per hour. In addition, all presenters will receivecomplimentary registration and one (1) banquet ticket. Poster presenters will receive a discounted registration andbanquet ticket.

Followups -

From IVAS (Ed) - Though AAVA dues have in the past been included inIVAS acupuncture course fees, they are not currently. Course fees includea julv 1 - June 30 IVAS membership, but nothing from AAVA.

Tufts is an IVAS Recognized Course, meaning they have had theircirriculum approved by the IVAS cirriculum committee and graduatingstudents are eligible to sit for the IVAS exam if they wish. Colorado andChi have been recognized in the past and the CirricuJum committee iscurrently trying to get them re-recognoized. Their students areapparently being allowed to sit for the exam during the negotiations.

From Narda (Colorado State Basic Acupuncture) - Narda was concernedthat IVAS certified members were somehow getting something fromAAVA that her students wouldn't be eligible for. I wrote her back andassured her that IVAS certification was not required for membership andthat students finishing her basic acupuncture courses were eligible tobecome full voting members of AAVA.Whether or not they chose tobecome IVAS members was up to them. She emailed me back thanks forthe support, but didn't say whether she wanted brochures.I followed up with another request.

From Chi - Dr. Xie asked for 50 brochures for his upcoming basic class. Iemailed Melissa the address to send them to.

Dear Simon:It has been astutely pointed out to me that the classification of certainmembers as associates in your data base (given to you by Rick Alampi) isnot correct. ACTIVE members are those that have completed thenecessary 120 hours minimum from any approved AAVA course namelyColorado, Chi, Tufts and IVAS. They do not require IVAS Certification inthat some have taken and completed the IVAS course but never becamecertified and that is OK and they are still active members.As such we have more active members than originally thought.Our dues renewal form should indicate where the applicant has receivedtheir 120 hours of education.My point is that the by-Laws probably did not pass the 20% sponsorshipand that we should "fix" your data base accordingly when themembership dues come in and only then remaster the bylaws and resend.Sorry ... but thanks to Ken and John for pointing this out.Nothing to do about the bylaws is the end result just now except to workon them after learning any deficiecies brought up this past go-around.I will post accordingly to the bulletin boards.Clear as mud?DirkDirk B. Posted on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - 10:37 am:Okay, we finally have input from all 4 veterinary acupuncture courses asfar as what they consider completion of their course of study:

Tufts:completion of 4 modules, totaling 140 hours. No formal finalexamination given, although there are "mock" Kg and Equine pointlocation exams. The students are given information regarding attainingcertification at their last class session.

CSUjAAVMA: completion of 5 modules, totaling 140 hours. Written andpractical examinations are given in each module. Students receive acertificate of course completion after successfully finishing all 5 modules.

Chi Institute: completion of 4 modules, totaling 130 hours. Written andpractical final exams at end of 4th session.

IVAS: Verbatim from Drs. Claeys and Boldt: "completion of the coursemeans IVAS Certification - attending all sessions (120 hours) passingexams, doing internship (or extra case reports as is sometimes stillallowed) and the 1 required case report."

So now it's up to the BOD to decide if we }will accept these definitionsapropos our bylaws, and award or deny active membership statusaccordingly.

We need to go by our the stated definition of active member, not our ownopinions.
