Initiation for Adults (RCIA) can help

you. If you have questions about the

Catholic faith, please drop by for

Inquiry any Wednesday evening at

WE NEED YOU

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation . . .

During the school year we rely on our

St. Mark students to bring in non-

perishable food items each week for

those in need. They do a wonderful

job of helping us fill local pantries.

School’s out for the summer and we

need our parishioners to do their part

to help those who are hungry and have

come to rely on St. Mark to help them.

Please bring items with you to Mass on

the weekends and drop off in the

baskets in the Gathering Space or the

bins by the Parish Hall. God bless you

for sharing His blessings to you with

those less fortunate.

Faith Formation for Elementary

Grades Begins September 7 —

Faith Formation office - and the Youth

Ministry Office.

Order your Magnifikid! NOW for

your child OR grandchildren OR

nieces and nephews!

Just like the Magnificat publication that

alot of our adults use for Mass, the

Magnifikid! is a tried and true

resource that enables children ( ages 4

and up) to follow the Mass more

closely, while learning more about our

Catholic faith in an enjoyable way. I

am renewing our parish subscription

SOON, so if you are interested in

getting a subscription ( Nov. 2016 -

May 2017; Sept and October 2017),

please contact Anne Doyle

Subscriptions are $ 10.00 for the year

due to our bulk rate. If you would like

to see a sample, please feel free to

stop by the Children's Faith Formation

office to see one.

Checks can be made out to St. Mark

Catholic Church. I would like to have

all orders in NO LATER than Sept.

Stewardship ~ Sharing News & Announcements New Parish App

Launching TODAY!

TODAY, August 14th, St. Mark will

launch our own app for iPhone and

Android smart phones. This will

allow us to better communicate with

you throughout the week and keep

you updated with relevant parish

news or updates. The app is very well

designed and very intuitive. It will be a

great resource for parishioners by

providing daily Mass readings,

Catholic news and prayers,

convenient prayer and Confession

reminders, our bulletins and more.

We hope for our new app to be a tool

for fostering stronger parish life at St.

Mark and better engaging the New

Evangelization.

Please stop by our official launch

table after each Mass on Sunday,

August 14th.

August 21

volunteer. Grab a friend and join our

Last month was a pretty big hit, so

we’re hoping for great attendance

again this month. We could really use

your help, so please don’t be shy. If

you can’t help out this month, just

come on over for Bagels and see

My Old Car and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

I tend to drive old cars for as long as they’ll run. This is

partly a blend of humility and a lack of vanity, but also

because I’m a church musician with six children, which

requires a certain frugality in my personal life.

Currently I’m approaching 200,000 miles with my 1998

Subaru Forester. It’s a good car – sturdy and

dependable – but some things are not working as well as they did when it was a

younger model. Like me, I suppose…

A few weeks ago while driving around town, the AC compressor began cutting in

and out. During the hottest days of the summer, the interior would suddenly get

very warm, like a hot flash. I just endured the slight discomfort…part of growing

older, I told myself. Then the fan and compressor died altogether. So I rolled

down the windows and suffered, thinking: “If anyone wishes to be my disciple, he

must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

I listen exclusively to classical music and Catholic radio in the car, all the time.

Well, last week the entire sound system died, a wiring issue I think. No radio, no

CDs. Nada. So now I sit in the hot car, in silence, contemplating: “Be still, and

know that I am God.” (Ps. 46:11)

This car is a 5-speed standard transmission. I noticed a few months ago that,

when in gear, the shift knob would swing wildly from side to side. It drives just

fine, but probably needs a new bushing in the gear shift linkage. My own

bushings are a little worn, and sometimes I wake in the morning and notice that

my parts don’t move like they used to. But God sustains me, and I remember:

“Even to your old age I am he, even when your hair is gray…I will carry you to

safety.” (Is. 46:4)

Eventually, my old car will go to the scrap heap, like all cars do. My own body will

give out, as well, to return to the dust from which it came until the end of time,

when there is “a new heaven and a new earth” (Rev. 21:1) and Jesus Christ

“changes our lowly bodies to conform with his glorious body” (Phil. 3:21). It’s the

fate of every human being ever created, with one exception.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, who by divine privilege and in honor of her role as the

“New Eve,” the new “Ark of the Covenant” and the “Theotokos” who bore God in

her womb, was spared the decay of her body “and, having completed the course

of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly

glory” (Munificentissimus Deus, Apostolic Constitution, 1950). This dogma of the

Catholic Church (believed from the earliest Christian era) is a great source of

hope to us, for we see in the Blessed Virgin Mary a foretaste of our own bodily

resurrection.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – August 15th – is usually a “Holy

Day of Obligation.” This year it falls on a Monday, so Catholics in the United

States do not commit serious sin if they do not attend. However, all are

encouraged to attend – it will be a proper and festive Solemnity, with music,

white vestments, and all the liturgical beauties of a Sunday Mass, celebrated on

Monday morning at 8:30 am. Think of it as a “Holy Day of Opportunity!”

I’ll be there for sure, unless my car breaks down.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Word: An unsettling Truth

Jesus said, "Do you think that I have come to bring peace

to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!"

(Luke 12:51)

Living the Word

As we know, it is not always easy to proclaim the Gospel -

whether it is in our work places, our neighborhoods, or

even on the soccer field! Jesus is telling us that His

message will most likely bring division between people -

between those who will accept it and those who will

not. The moral issues of today causes division between us

who share in Jesus' mission and those around us who do

not follow the Word of God and the teachings of the

Catholic Church, much like the early Christians. We pray

that more people will build their relationship with our Lord

so that they too, will be 'on fire' to help spread the Good

News of the Gospel.

Questions of the Week

Children: Is it important to do the right thing even if

others are angry as a result? Why or why not?

Adults: When has your taking a strong stand on a

moral issue created division rather than healing in the short

term?

St. Mark Catholic School Mary Myers, Principal

Our objective at St. Mark Catholic School is to provide an

educational environment where children of all backgrounds

can thrive. The strong spiritual foundation that a Catholic

education provides will help a child succeed throughout life.

St. Mark's academic programs are designed to give

students a firm background in the sciences, mathematics,

and language arts as well as a solid understanding of the

Christian faith. Students in all grades also study foreign

languages, music and physical education. The entire

student body at St. Mark participates in community service

and Faith in Action projects throughout the year. St. Mark

offers numerous extracurricular clubs and fields numerous

champion sports teams.
