Local Mission - Crossroads 2017 "Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25: 37-38,40 The gospel was demonstrated to God's glory Sunday August 6th at Crossroads. 35 volunteers prepared and served 450 meals to a thankful community. Many thanks to those who participated in this important mission event. Sister Liz said First Presbyterian of Plymouth is a much appreciated veteran team! A special thank you to Joan Oldham for her time and talent, and Wayne Krupin for his willingness to be the "man behind the scenes." It was a blessing to serve with all of you. Kris Black

FPCP is helping to support foster children in Wayne County by collecting school supplies and backpacks.

The greatest need is for backpacks for grades 6-12.

There will be a supply list in the narthex and on the church web site. Items may

be placed in the collection area downstairs. Thank you for helping 2,000 children start the new school year with a smile on their face.

The Gospel According to Paul, by John MacArthur Join this 8-week Bible Study, Tuesday Evenings in the Chapel

7:15 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesdays from September 19 to November 7, 2017 The subtitle of this new book by John MacArthur, published in 2017, is “Embracing The Good News at the Heart of Paul’s Teachings.” Unlike the rest of the apostles, Paul never spent time with Jesus during Christ’s earthly ministry. However, he defended the authority and purity of the gospel: “I am appointed for the defense of the gospel of God.” MacArthur writes, “Gospel truth permeates everything Paul ever wrote.”

Join in reading and discussing topics, including Things of First Importance, How Can a Person be Right with God, Alive Together with Christ, and The Lessons of Grace.

Sign up on the bulletin board next to the elevator on the first floor.

Copies of the book (cost $13) will be available at the first class on Tuesday, September 19.

WEDNESDAY MORNING WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

AMP - A Morning’s Peace & W3 – Women in the Word on Wednesdays

Twelve More Women of the Bible Study Guide: Life-Changing Stories for Women Today by Sherry Harney September 13 – November 15, 2017 (10 weeks) Cost: $15 (Materials & Study Guide)

This Bible study is for women of all ages and is structured to meet once a week for 10 consecutive sessions. We will look at the spiritual lessons learned from ten women in the Bible and what they mean for us today. You will look at these women’s successes and failures, see how they drew near to God in the midst of trials, and learn how they overcame rejection and disappointment. Their stories will inspire us to persevere through difficult times and find joy in the hope that Jesus has provided. This 10-week Study Guide provides reflective questions to be answered between sessions. A DVD lesson is shown in class each week with small group discussion to follow. Class meets from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. with free childcare. Contact: Rev. Emily Campbell ([email protected]) or Sue Kage ([email protected]) or register online at: http://fpcp.net/grow/adults/wednesday-morning-womens-bible-study Additionally, you may sign up on the Life Long Learning bulletin board by the elevator. Please register by September 10th.

Early Word Bible Study Begins the study of the Reformation

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017

Come join Early Word at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesdays for an 11- week study of the reformation. What does “Protestant” mean? What are the differences in worship among Protestants? Who were the Huguenots? What does the Reformation mean for us today?

In an easy-to-use question-and-answer style, Reformation Questions, Reformation Answers highlights the key facts, people, and theologies of the Protestant Reformation, as well as major legacies of the historical movement. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, this study will help us understand a critical moment in Christian history that still deeply affects who the church is today. Questions: contact Sue Kage at [email protected].

Continuing the Word Bible Study Starting Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 11:30am - 1:00pm. Hearth Room

Parables from The Backside by J. Ellsworth Kalas, ($11, available on the first day of class) This 12 week class focuses on some of Jesus' well-known parables but approaches them from a different point of view. We all know the parable of the Good Samaritan, who very clearly was a good human being, but did you ever wonder what the Jewish "victim" was thinking about this Samaritan fellow? Or, what about the Father in the story about the prodigal son? What was going through his mind? This is a "retelling of the stories through the eyes of minor characters." This Study is open to all ages, men and women. For more information, contact Joann Oldham, 734-455-4639 (daytime) or [email protected]

News & Announcements

Darlene Maginley joins Staff as Interim Director of Children’s Ministries

Darlene Maginley has accepted an appointment as Interim Director of Children’s Ministries, effective Monday, August 7. The 20 hours-per-week position opened with the resignation of Victoria Barkoff as Director of Children’s Ministries, effective July 31, following five years of service to FPCP. The Interim Director of Children’s Ministries coordinates, participates in, and oversees all aspects of young children’s programs, infant through grade 5. The interim director helps develop the calendar and yearly budget for Christian Nurture, maintains Sunday School registration, recruits Sunday School teachers and executes teacher training. The interim director writes articles for the bulletin, coordinates children’s mission projects with the mission committees and plans special events to include children in worship. In addition, the interim director integrates music in the Sunday School, and attends staff meetings, Family Ministry team meetings, Christian Nurture committee meetings, as well as the mid-week Bridge program. The position supervises the Young Child Care Coordinator. Newly added to the position description for 2018, the interim director directs the Vacation Bible School (VBS). Darlene, along with her husband Matt and their daughter Claire, has been active in church life since the Maginleys became members of FPCP. Darlene earned her BS in Education from Indiana State University and taught pre-school for several years. At FPCP, she has taught Sunday School, and pre-school classes in Vacation Bible School and Bridge. She is a Deacon, co-coordinator of FPCP’s Prayer Shawl Ministry Group and a long-time member of the church’s Hand Bell Choir. A regional, expanded search will begin shortly to identify a permanent Director of Children’s Ministries, a 20 hours-per- week position.

Calling All Gardeners (and shoppers!) Once again we have the opportunity to help families within our community by donating fresh fruits and vegetables to Northville Civic Concern. If your garden has an abundant crop, please consider sharing. Whatever you bring in and leave on the produce stand in the Narthex will be delivered to Civic Concern. Each week they donate groceries and produce to local families that may otherwise go without. If you do not have a garden but would like to contribute, store bought produce is also accepted. The Local Mission committee is so thankful for your generosity. We will be collecting produce through the end of September.

Stewardship Update for August

So far this church year, the total of donations is $592,124. The budgeted expenditures are $600,653. Donations normally slow down in the summer, particularly in August. So, if you’re going away on vacation, please be sure your pledge is up-to-date. This will help our church avoid a “cash crunch” at the end of August. Thanks for your support! The FPCP Stewardship Committee: Tina Creguer, Martha Boeve, Orlean Heidel, Jack Farrow

Presbyterian Women Host an Exchange Student! Make a New Friend from across the Globe!

IE- USA is seeking host homes for the upcoming school year. Why not branch out and try something new and different this year? Hosting an exchange student is simpler than you might think! The students come equipped with their own insurance, their own spending money - all you need to supply is “room and board” plus the emotional support of a family. The rewarding relationship you receive in return is priceless!

Would you consider helping these students by welcoming one of them into your home? To get more information with no obligation, please call Heather at (313)300-9059 or email at [email protected]

Experience the Wonders of SpringHill Camp… The weekend of Sept. 29 – Oct. 1, 2017 Presbyterian Women will journey to SpringHill Camp in Evart, Michigan for a Women’s Retreat. Here is your chance for a life-affirming, faith-renewing opportunity to feed your body and soul. The SpringHill Women’s Retreat will rejuvenate through encouraging messages, uplifting music, challenging and practical workshops, thrilling activities and meaningful connections with other women. You’ll also get some quiet time for personal reflection. This year’s speaker is popular author, Liz Curtis Higgs. She is a must see!!!! Liz has 3 abiding passions: encouraging sisters in Christ, exploring the stories of women in the Bible, and writing novels set in Scotland of old. When she's not traveling, speaking, or spinning a story, she connects with readers online, take copious photos, and reads historical novels. Liz say she is a lame housekeeper, a marginal cook, and a mediocre gardener, but home is still her favorite place to land. Cost is $180.00. More details can be found at the link listed below. Price includes housing, meals and the weekend program (plus shared gasoline costs). There is a sign-up sheet on the Presbyterian Women bulletin board. We hope you will be able to join us for this relaxing and renewing weekend. https://www.springhillcamps.com/experiences/retreat-events/michigan/womens-retreats

Did you know….Proverbs 8:17 says, “I love those who love me and those who seek me find me.” Does this

mean God insists that we love Him first before He loves us back? NOOO! God loves us unconditionally! It’s called Grace! “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19) Sometimes we innocently misinterpret Scripture. What God really wants is a true relationship with us – He wants our hearts. Proverbs 8:17 is talking about wisdom (personified). In other words, wisdom loves those who love wisdom and those who seek wisdom find it. Learn more; join a Bible Study. Lord, I know you a little; I want to know you more. Amen.
