HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA
Holy God, you sent your Son, Jesus, into our world as bread from heaven. May we taste and see the goodness of the Lord in ways that remove our blindness
sharpen our vision, and strengthen us for the journey through life to death and eternal life with you.
So Be Imitators of God, As Beloved Children, and Live in Love: The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to “be imitators of God” give us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we
should expect of ourselves and others. Don’t we expect God to be patient, compassionate, loving, merciful and wise? Don’t we trust that God will provide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as beloved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as we build up the Kingdom of God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire us to live in love as sisters and brothers in God our Father. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Reflecting on the Word How’s your vision? I remember the appointment when an optometrist first said that I needed glasses. Now I’m surprised when my prescription doesn’t change. Whether through glasses, contact lenses, or even surgery, most of us need help to see better from time to time. Elijah’s vision had gone terribly wrong. Thinking himself a failure, he prayed for death. God’s angel touched him and corrected his vision through food, drink, and words of encouragement. Seeing anew, he made the journey to Horeb. The Jews needed a vision correction, too. They thought they knew Jesus, as did his townsfolk a few weeks ago, but they don’t really know him. It takes time to correct their vision to see him as the Son, who helps them see the Father. Their literal understanding of his words also blinds them to his identity as God’s bread from heav-en. Some vision correction requires a stronger prescrip-tion. Not all chose to understand these words. But for those who did, his flesh is the bread that gives life to the world. The Ephesians were also blinded by bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling. The corrective lens entailed kindness, compassion, and forgiving as God has forgiven. These “little virtues” help us take on the mind and heart of Christ and see the world through the lens that the Holy Spirit provides. These virtues help us listen to and learn from the Father by going to Jesus. He bakes us into bread for the world. Where you see as God sees? Thank God. Where your vision is too narrow or literal, ask the Divine Physician for lenses that help you imitate God, as beloved children, who love as Christ loves. Currently there are openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. In addition to being good singers, potential members must be capable sight-readers due to a limited rehearsal schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Diocesan Music Office (412-456-3042) before August 21. Our grill opens at 6:30 PM along with specialty food each night. Rides, games, bingo, and raffles open at 7:00 PM and nightly bands begin playing at 8:00 PM. We extend our condolences to the family of Arthur McConnell Fryer who was buried from Holy Child Parish. May he
rest in peace in the kingdom of God. May his family and friends know the faithfulness of Christ’s love. A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): “Stop murmuring” Jesus told the disciples in today’s gospel. Complaining is a dead-end and constant complaining is nagging. We might feel better but others feel bitter. Silence or grumbling will not resolve the problem. Address differences honestly and respectfully. Don’t make them personal attacks.

News For Life: It has been 50 years since Pope Paul VI’s groundbreaking en-cyclical about love, sex and marriage Hu-manae Vitae. A documentary “The Sexual
Revolution: 50 Years Since Humane Vitae” is being shown across the country. It is not available in the Pittsburgh area yet, but the trailer gives a glimpse into the movie: https://www.sexualrevolutionmovie.com/trailer.html. Seven years in the making, SEXUAL REVOLUTION seeks to examine the effects of the free-love experiment of the hippie genera-tion and the prophetic encyclical, Humanae Vitae.
