Truth shall spring out of the earth,

and justice shall look down from heaven.

    — Psalm 85:12

    Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of

land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we

have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can

awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-

ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare

us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and

whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to

plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-

ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-

itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach

heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.

    Amen.

    Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

    From the Pastor’s Desk

Fr. Ron Rolheiser, OMI, currently serves as President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX, and is an author whom I have come to appreciate over the years. I recently ran across the following in one of his articles:

“Faith is not easy today for any of us. To have real faith, an actual belief in God, requires something more than simply continuing to roll with the flow of our own particular faith communities. I say this because it is becom-ing clearer that today it is much easier to have faith in Christianity, in a code of ethics, in Jesus’ moral teaching, in God’s call for justice, in an ideology of Christianity, and even in the value of gathering for worship, than it is to have a personal and real relationship to God.

“Being born into a Christian family and worshipping within in a Christian church can give us a relationship to a religion, to an ideology, to a truth, and to a community of worship; but these things, of themselves, are not the same thing as an actual faith in God. Just as we have people who believe but do not practice, many of us practice but do not believe. Subscribing to an ideology, however noble and inspirational it might be is not the same thing as be-lieving in and actually worshipping God.”

At first glance, it might seem that Fr. Rolheiser is downplaying the value of that relationship with Christi-anity, etc., but I think that would be to miss his point. I know personally that the relationship I have to a religion, an ideology, to a truth and to a community of worship is essential to my faith. But my faith is not in those things, per se. My faith is in God.

One clear reason for this is that my view of Christianity, my practice of religion, my understanding of the truth and the worshipping community itself will always be flawed, precisely because these are human realities, as grace-filled as they may be. While shaped and formed by God’s revelation and wisdom, each is also vulnerable to my (and others’) human failings and shortcomings. They are instruments, meant to instill and nurture that faith in God which is the true goal of religion.

His article goes on to highlight the importance of nurturing that faith in ‘those lonely, private hours’ spent with God, ‘when there are just the two of us and nobody else is around.’ Many things (and he has a list) can chip away at that faith. But no religion, truth or community can replace that intimate relationship with a living God to which our Baptism calls each and every one of us.
