    Plimouth Beach

    Plymouth Beach is part of the

    breathtaking panorama seen from

    Plimoth Plantation. Few visitors

    know that this beautiful shoreline

    plays a crucial role in a complex

    and ancient system of shorebird

    migration routes running from

    the tip of South America to the

    Arctic tundra. In addition to the

    threatened and endangered spe-

    cies that breed and nest on this

    local barrier beach, more than

    20,000 migratory birds use the

    bay as a fuel stop.

    Eighty-ve striking images by

    nature photographer Jim Fenton

    provide a close-up of coastal wa-

    ter bird life to reveal their beauty

    and behavior. Developed in part-nership with the Manomet Center

    for Conservation Sciences,

    Goldenrod Foundation and Mas-

    sachusetts Audubon Society, and

    produced with generous nancial

    support from the Bobolink Foun-

    dation, Goldenrod Foundation,

    Sheehan Family Foundation and

    others.

    We will explore the many tidal

    creeks and islands of the harbor,

    looking for shorebirds, osprey,

    horseshoe crabs and other crea-

    tures of the marsh. Well also

    come ashore at the Sandy Neck

    barrier beach lighthouse. This

    previous kayaking experience,

    yet all experience levels are

    welcome. Kayaks, paddles and

    This event takes sand castle

    building to the highest level, but

    converge on Jetties Beach, just

    outside Nantucket Town, to

    create art out of beach sand. A

    panel of judges chooses winners

    in a number of classes. Although

    standard castles and mermaid

    sculptures rule the day, a number

    of creative entries win a prize

    each year. Anyone can enter, but

    whether competing or just watch-

    ing, fun is a guaranteed factor.
