In 1992, Rev. Raymond Rivera founded the Latino Pastoral Action Center, which runs community-based ministries. The organization, based in the Bronx, seeks to “build the foundation of a healthy, holistic society” with a particular focus on underserved communities.

In the group’s latest effort, it is partnering with the city to bring attention to new access to primary and preventive care and pharmacy services at local public hospitals – and Rivera hopes that it will move low income residents from resorting to the ER when in need of medical treatment.

The city has officially launched NYC Care, the administration’s initiative to provide those who do not qualify or cannot afford health insurance with access to primary and preventive care at the city’s public hospitals.

First announced in January, the $100 million program is starting in the Bronx

Enrollees in NYC Care, which carries no monthly premiums or annual fees, will

“Your card unlocks your access to the physical and mental health care that you need when you need it,” said Dr. Herminia Palacio, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services at a press conference on August 1. “And with not just the quality you deserve, but the dignity and compassion of dedicated healthcare professionals and staff.”

She said the NYC Care card “is not an insurance card, it is a membership card” to NYC Health + Hospitals services.

Dr. Mitchell Katz, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, said that guaranteeing every New Yorker their own primary care provider will provide a boost to patient health from a continuity standpoint.

“I can say from thirty years of medical practice, [what] makes a difference is seeing people over time, knowing that when you have a problem there is somebody that you can go to,” he said.

According to the Mayor’s Office, nearly 600,000 New Yorkers are uninsured. Approximately half of these are currently ineligible for health insurance or unable to afford it based on the Affordable Care Act definition, and would be eligible to enroll in NYC Care.

“Health care is for everyone and should be a right. It’s not a privilege,” said Bitta Mostofi, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA). “We

Following the tragic Bronx deaths of twin infants, who died after being left in a hot car for eight hours, a local legislator wants to take action to prevent similar tragedies.

One-year-old Phoenix and Luna Rodríguez died on July 25 after their father Juan Rodríguez accidentally forgot them in the car while he went to work at the Veteran’s Affairs hospital in Cabrera’s Bronx district.

A medical examiner later determined the infants’ bodies had reached 108 degrees.

City Councilmember Fernando Cabrera said he plans to introduce a Council bill that would require all vehicles in New York City to be equipped with back seat technology to remind parents of children in the car.

“It would require technology that if you walk away from a car, you would be alerted if you left your child in the car,” he said at an August 4th press conference convened outside the James J. Peters V.A. Medical Center, where Rodríguez was a social

According to Kids and Cars, a child safety advocacy group, an average of 38 heat-related deaths occur nationwide each year due to kids locked in cars.

Fifty-three children died in 2018 after being left in hot vehicles.

After the Rodríguez deaths, there have now been 23 such casualties in 2019.

“The biggest mistake you can make is thinking that this cannot happen,” remarked Sue Auriemma, Vice President of Kids and Cars. “It could happen to anyone. It’s happened to hundreds of families since 1990. Over 1,000 children have died in hot cars.”

At the press conference, car manufacturer Hyundai demonstrated its Rear Occupant Alert (ROA), a motion sensor meant to remind parents to check for children or pets in the back seat before they walk away from the car. When a driver turns off the ignition, an alert appears on the dashboard reminding them to check the back seat. If the driver attempts locks the car, a blaring alarm sounds outside the vehicle.

The ROA technology is currently standard on two Hyundai models, and will be included on all of the company’s cars by 2022, said Donny Nordlicht, Communications Manager for Hyundai.

The technology is based on motion, so if children were asleep and not moving, the alarm would not sound. However, if they began moving at any point while locked in the car, the alarm would sound to alert passersby, Nordlicht said. An alert can also be provided to the parent via a smartphone app.

Iwas raised in a movement, called to serve by the injustice

of our health care system.

I’m running for Congress because fighting for our communities is the fight of my life.

My Bronx-born Mami put me to work in the feminist movement in Puerto Rico alongside Afro-Boricua, Lesbians, cis, working, and middle-class women all fighting together for equality. I came to understand that, as mujeres, justice and equality belonged to us too and that it would not be easily given by those who benefited from the patriarchy.

From early on, Mami taught me to fight. As a doctor, Papi served his patients

regardless of their ability to pay. I worked in his office over the summers and saw patients barter with him if they didn’t have money to pay for his services. Papi never turned them away. I saw service to others in action and realized that a healthcare system that bases its decisions on profits over people is a broken one.

I came to New York City to study and stayed, as many do, to find new opportunities. But, in navigating this big, diverse city, I also saw its scary underbelly. Prejudice, racism, inequality were right there in front of me. Activism led me to be mentored by former Young Lords like Richie Perez and organize and march against police brutality. I organized workers with 1199 SEIU for better working conditions and built a diaspora-based coalition to end the U.S. Navy’s bombing practices in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

As the first Latina elected to serve the 8th Council District and as the first Latinx Speaker, I advanced progressive policies that people said we’d never get done. Despite the doubt, we worked hard and we won. We pushed for innovative policies like city-wide criminal justice reforms; the clearing 10 years of warrants hanging on the backs of working people; and the first legal fund for unaccompanied minors to protect immigrant children. We effectively advocated for NYCHA residents by making NYCHA quality-of-life matters a priority in New York City and ear-marking tens of millions of dollars for repairs and upgrades.

During my 12 years in public service, I’ve fought for and served the people in the Bronx and East Harlem.

Every movement emerges out of some injustice. Most recently, the revolution that has rocked Puerto Rico is one that has been heard around the world and has made its message clear: the government must serve you and NOT corporations, hedge funds, and special

Llegué a comprender que, como mujeres, la justicia y la igualdad también nos pertenecían, y que no sería fácil para quienes se benefician del patriarcado.

Desde el principio, mami me enseñó a pelear.Como médico, papi atendía a sus pacientes

independientemente de su capacidad de pago. Trabajaba en su oficina durante los veranos y vi pacientes hacer trueques con él si no tenían dinero para pagar sus servicios. Papi nunca los rechazó. Vi el servicio hacia otros en acción y me di cuenta de que un sistema de salud que basa sus decisiones en las ganancias sobre las personas, está roto.

Vine a la ciudad de Nueva York para estudiar y me quedé, como muchos lo hacen, para encontrar nuevas oportunidades. Pero, al navegar por esta ciudad grande y diversa, también vi su parte indefensa y aterradora. Los prejuicios, el racismo, la desigualdad, estaban justo ahí delante de mí. El activismo me llevó a ser orientada por ex Young Lords -como Richie Pérez- y a formar parte de organizaciones y marchar contra la brutalidad policial. Organicé a los trabajadores con 1199 SEIU para obtener

mejores condiciones de trabajo y construí una coalición basada en la diáspora para poner fin a las prácticas de bombardeo de la Marina de los Estados Unidos en Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Como la primera latina electa para servir en el 8º Distrito del Consejo y como la primera latinx

presidenta del Concejo, desarrollé políticas progresistas que la gente dijo que nunca lograríamos que fueran aprobadas. A pesar de la duda, trabajamos duro y ganamos. Impulsamos políticas innovadoras para toda la ciudad, como: las reformas de justicia penal; la cancelación de 10 años de órdenes de detención que colgaban de la espalda de los trabajadores; y el primer fondo legal para menores no acompañados para proteger a los niños inmigrantes. Defendimos de manera efectiva a los residentes de NYCHA haciendo de los asuntos de calidad de vida de NYCHA una prioridad en la ciudad de Nueva York y conseguimos decenas de millones de

interests. That’s why I’m running for Congress, and

I’m asking for your support. I’m ready to fight and to serve the Bronx. I

won’t be working for corporate interests or real estate developers. I’ll be listening to you, and I’ll be fighting alongside you against injustice, against a racist President, and against the status quo that leaves most of us behind.

I will be a people-driven candidate who will focus on being accessible to you and every corner of the district, from Mott Haven to University Heights. He said the hospital system has been bolstered, with the hiring of new physicians and expansion of clinics and pharmacy services.

Perreo is an energetic dance similar to twerking and is often associated with

Resistance, an LGBTQ collective that played a central role in protests and demonstrations in Puerto Rico calling for Rosselló’s resignation.

The group took part in the protests in Puerto Rico, staging a “Renuncia Ball” with LGBTQ members dancing and posing near La Fortaleza as part of the massive call for change.

“It’s a good chance to get everybody checked out at once,” she said.

Collymore said that Acacia strives to keep local children healthier, to help them remain in school rather than risk missing education with absences.

“The partnership between housing and health care and education, these are the essential items in life,” he said.

Ronald Rosado Abad, Acacia’s Senior Vice President for Transitional Housing, said families from the organization’s shelter and housing sites were provided transportation to participate in the event.

“We want them to connect with this facility also, making sure that children and families have access to primary care,” he said.

The Ramon Vélez Health Center,

located at 754 East 151st Street in the Bronx, provides an array of comprehensive health services, including preventive care, HIV care, and pediatrics. It also features a state-of-the-art recovery center offers medication-assisted therapies for opioid dependence.

The center opened in 2016, in a building that formerly housed the Hunts Point Multi-Service Center, founded by Vélez in 1967.

“We really try to identify the needs of the Bronx population,” said James Dike, Outreach Director for Acacia. “The need for these services is paramount in this area.”

Hours after Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo was

suspended from the NYPD as a judge in a disciplinary trial recommended he be fired for the chokehold death of Eric Garner, police reform advocates held a protest outside of police headquarters demanding that Pantaleo be dismissed immediately from the force.

While Mayor Bill de Blasio had called the recommendation and suspension “a step toward justice and accountability,” speakers at the rally advocates were not as enthused.

“Are we supposed to say thank you? I don’t even know what to do,” said Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. “It’s been five years. [Pantaleo] could have been suspended for 30 days without pay years ago.”

The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) voted on

Wednesday to extend the cap on For Hire Vehicles (FHV) such as Uber and Lyft for another year, and to limit the amount of time vehicles can drive without passengers below 96th Street in Manhattan.

The rules were passed unanimously in a vote by TLC’s board, the agency said.

First announced in June by Mayor Bill de Blasio, the rules are designed to ease congestion on city streets and provide a boost to driver earnings due to decreased competition. Currently, there are 120,000 FHVs in New York City, including over 86,000 affiliated with app-based companies.

“For far too long, ride-share apps took advantage of their drivers. Their wages plummeted and families struggled to put food on their tables. We stood up and said no more. We will not let big corporations walk all over hardworking New Yorkers and choke our streets with congestion,” said de Blasio in a statement. “Our caps have resulted in increased wages and families finally have some relief. I look forward to putting these new caps into effect immediately.”

According to the city, FHV drivers spend 41 percent of their time driving without passengers. Under the new rule, app-based

companies will be required to reduce this to 31 percent by August 2020. It would be in effect from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.

The new rules do not apply to wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

At a public hearing in July, app-based drivers asked the city not to prolong the cap, with many noting that they were now forced to lease their vehicle at a higher price than if they owned it.

They also requested a delay in the TLC’s vote, an action that was also recommended by City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.

After the TLC officially extended the cap, the Independent Drivers Guild (IDG), which represents 65,000 app-based drivers, expressed its discontent.

“The city is gambling with the livelihoods

“Our sector of the industry is not responsible for the congestion problem, as most of our rides are local and in the outer boroughs. Therefore, additional vehicles will not undermine the TLC’s policy goals,” said the group in a statement.

“While everyone focuses on the high-volume bases, and the yellow medallion crisis, our small livery sector is quickly disappearing,” the statement read. “The city must not wait for another crisis before acting. We call on our Mayor, City Councilmembers, TLC Commissioners, and community leaders to work with us to address this problem.”
