A lthough enabling students to study abroad is one thrust of the internationalization efforts at MSSU,

many students have financial or family obligations that prohibit them from participating in the experience. The unique concept of focusing the fall semester on a particular country or continent was devised as a way to bring the world to every student at the university.

Since 1997, MSSU has organized themed semesters focusing on China, Africa, Latin America, America, Japan, India, Cuba, Russia, Mexico, France, Germany, Canada, Brazil, Egypt, Thailand and Italy. The semesters have expanded from around a dozen scheduled events to more than 60 on occasion. This innovative approach introduces students to at least four different cultures during a typical undergraduate education.

While most universities emphasize study abroad as the primary vehicle to internationalize their campuses, in reality only a small percentage of students actually participate in this endeavor. The internationally themed semesters at MSSU reach virtually every student, and at the same time, provide a global perspective and cultural enrichment for the entire community.

T heatre does what nothing else does.

Before your eyes, tales old and new are told again for the first time. Lives are enacted and changed. Ideas are impersonated, analyzed and evaluated. From the vast storehouse of human experience, events and encounters are

selected, distilled to their essence and presented to you for your entertainment and enlightenment. There may be laughter or tears, deep thoughts or goofy

jokes … or all of the above. The plays performed are as varied as the people whose stories they tell. The theatre is a time machine, a magnifying glass, a mirror.

Southern Theatre takes its make-believe seriously. Our goal is always to perform to the best of our abilities to create productions through which we – as performers and as audience members – can explore our humanity … who we are and why we are.

This year we will open with an American classic: Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” In October we will present “The Trojan Women,” a moving tragedy by Euripides in a vibrant translation by Edith Hamilton. A new play for children (of all ages), “Mother Goose Christmas Mystery,” will arrive in December to add some fun to your holiday season.

Theatre does what nothing else does. We hope that you can join us to share the experience.

T he MSSU Music Department has a longstanding tradition of bringing entertaining concerts from a variety of musical backgrounds to the

Joplin community, both on and off campus. We are thrilled to continue this tradition with our fall calendar, which is full of artistic and exciting

performances.

We offer a wide variety of musical and educational opportunities to students planning to pursue a career or embrace an interest in music. We offer baccalaureate degrees in applied music (performance), music education (vocal or instrumental), and music industry. All interested student musicians have the opportunity to continue to participate in our performance groups regardless of his or her desire to major, minor or just participate at MSSU. Our faculty is committed to the growth and development of our students, both personally and professionally. MSSU students and ensembles have performed on many international stages—such as in Italy, China, and France—and for national productions, such as the 2012 MLB All-Star Game. This fall, we will be entertaining our audiences with such productions as: Jazz Combos (November 13, 14), Jazz Orchestra (December 2), Wind Ensemble (November 3), Southern Company’s ONSTAGE (November 20), Southern Symphony Orchestra (November 7), the fifth annual MSSU Seasonal Choral Flourish (December 5) and the Percussion Ensemble featuring our new steel drum ensemble, the Steel Pan Lions (December 3). Please come join us for any or all of our musical performances!
