On July 16, the Community Life Council convened for a mid-morning discussion of two topics close to their hearts. First, the

group evaluated the successes and challenges of the 2013 Bethesda Family Picnic “Plan B.”

Next, the Council members offered their heartfelt goodbyes to our dear Community Life Assistant,

Kelsey, as she prepared for her last day and return to Chicago. Many thanks to Emilio,

Donald, Bruce, Tony, Kristin, and Kelsey for your honest feedback and commitment to service!

Don’t forget our next meeting!

For their first ever Fourth of July Picnic, the guests, residents, and staff members at Our Brother’s Place

put on one festive affair! From a full-scale BBQ outdoors to an afternoon of gameplay and prizes, the day was

filled with fun, companionship, and celebration. Soon enough, it will be time to get excited about the next

For the NFL and Bethesda Project alike, it’s training season! On July 16, Bethesda staff members and interns joined Associate Director Jason M. for an informative and engaging presentation on homelessness in the US. On three other days in July, staff members from 1630, OBP, and our residences attended trainings on gender awareness with Barrett Marshall of the Mazzoni

Center. All this training is but another way to keep our work competent and compassionate. Great job, Team!

A VERY special THANK YOU to Kristin Zuhone, our UPenn summer intern who finishes up her 3-month, 40-hour a week tour of duty on August 13. Kristin has been an indis-pensable member of the Community Life Team. We will miss her gentle, determined and organized demeanor!

This month, thousands of generous young men and men gathered for their orientation to a year of service among our country’s poor and under-served citizens. Tony and Kristin joined one such group—the Mercy Volunteer Corps— as they prepared to carry the charism of compassion to the people they will serve.

Bethesda has been blessed with many such passionate and loving volunteers over the years, and we celebrate the single-minded dedication of their service. They are a reminder to us of our own volunteer origins and the indispensable place in our mission and work of love and compassion freely given.
