Pastors Corner We must grow up in every way into him
who is the head, into Christ, from whom the
whole body, joined and knit together by
every ligament with which it is equipped, as
each part is working properly, promotes the
body's growth in building itself up in love.
Ephesians 4:15-16 (reading for Sunday, August 2)
Each year when we request financial assistance to cover our
annual operating expenses, we submit to the Diocese of Missouri
information about the parish. I want to share some of that data
with you, because it provides us a look back over the last 5+ years,
as well as a look forward.
Although St. Francis has been around for 25 years, my tenure
here began on January 1, 2010. So thats the starting point for the
data Im providing. At the end of the year of 2010, we averaged
38 people in church on Sunday mornings. As of July 26, 2015, we
are averaging 64 people on Sundays. Thats an increase of 68%.
The number of pledges that we received in 2015 was double (100%
higher) the number in 2010. And the dollars pledged has increased
over the last 5 years by 70%.
St. Francis has always been mission-minded, and our efforts
on behalf of those in need continue. We collect food and help dis-
tribute it at the Eureka Food Pantry. We grow food for pantries at
the YMCA garden plot. We feed the hungry at Trinity in the Cen-
tral West End on 5th Sundays. On Sunday, Aug 3 well gather in
18 pairs of shoes for children whose parents are clients of Agape
House (a social service agency) in Pacific. We also participate in
Adopt-a-Highway, Pacifics Correctional Centers prison minis-
tries, and a host of other outreach activities.
We continue our growth initiatives, working on ways to spread

Property Update
Only one item remains before closing on the property: Material thrown into a ra-
vine at the edge of the property will be cleaned out. The site includes items such as
tractor tires, roof shingles, etc. The process of cleaning out this farm dump is un-
derway. Once that is completed, we can close.
Meeting to Discuss Building Plans: Sun., Aug 23
Two building plans are included in this Chalice on pages 24 and 25. You can also
pick up a copy of those plans downstairs at the Lodge on Sunday morning. The
plans are ideas, not meant as drawings of what well actually end up building. The
point is to spark your creativity and best thinking about what space we need and
how it should be organized.
Please plan on bringing your critiques and ideas to the Adult Forum, 11:55 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m., on Sunday, August 23. Well record everyones thoughts and use
those as we go forward toward developing a building plan.

save this date: Saturday, August 22nd.
St. Francis has planned our annual float trip at Old Cove Canoe and Kayak near

there. After the float, well have use of a reserved picnic shelter in the shade for
sharing of pulled pork (thanks, George Vits!), chips, sides and desserts. Here are the
details:

WHEN: 12:30 p.m.
MEET WHERE: Commuter lot at 4th St. and Highway 109 in Eureka
WHO: Any St. Francis member, their friends and family
BRING: Snacks and beverages for the float
Sunscreen and hats
Dish to share at picnic
Kids, grandkids, neighbors, friends

the good news of Christ and invite others to come and see what were about at St.
Francis Church. We are currently revamping our website, making it more user-
friendly and including a page specifically for visitors. We continue going door-to-
door on Saturday mornings, inviting our neighbors to worship at St. Francis Church.
We are present at Eureka community events, such as Concerts on Central, and we
will have a booth again at Eureka Days in September.
Hopefully in August we will close on the property in Eureka. Having our own
land and building at the entrance to a new, 527-home subdivision positions us for
tremendous future growth. These past 5 years, growing in Christ, have been excit-
ing and fulfilling. I cant wait for the next 5 to see where Christ will lead us, build-
ing the church up in love. Thanks be to God!

Clergy Discretionary Fund On the first Sunday of each month the loose plate offering collected at St. Fran-
cis worship services is earmarked for the Clergy Discretionary Fund. This fund is primarily a channel for us to provide assistance to persons in need. The money col-lected is deposited into a separate checking account to be utilized as Pastor Sally or Deacon Rebecca determine.
As you consider making a contribution to this fund, please bear in mind that these individuals coming to us are typically seeking help with necessities such as food, rent, utilities, and gas. Your continued generosity grants us the opportunity to carry out this crucial ministry to the community beyond the doors of our parish. Many have received benefit from the goodwill and kind-heartedness that so very much characterizes the nature of St. Francis parish.
Deacon Rebecca
Hello from the Rev. Patricia Williams,
Former Priest of St. Francis In 1994 and 1995, the Rev. Patricia Williams was a priest for St. Francis
Church. Recently, Pats husband died. Pastor Sally communicated with Pat, ex-
pressing condolences. Pat responded back and asked that she be remembered to the
people of St. Francis. Pat remembers her time with St. Francis fondly, says hello,
and wishes everyone well.
Acolyte Training - Aug 9 We are planning to hold an acolyte training for all persons currently serving,
those who are interested in serving as an acolyte or those who are just curious as to find if this ministry speaks to you. All persons age 9 to 99 are welcome to serve. Acolytes serve at the 10:15 a.m. worship service only. Duties here at St. Francis in-clude lighting and extinguishing the altar candles, carrying the processional cross and assisting the clergy as they prepare for Holy Eucharist.
Training will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2015 following Adult Forum at 12:30 p.m. in the worship space at the Lodge. Please feel free to talk with Pastor Sally or Deacon Rebecca if you have any questions regarding the training session or serving as an acolyte.

From the Deacon
Friendships: Spiritual and human
As a girl scout many years ago, we would sing this song:
Make new friends but keep the old;
One is silver and the other is gold.
You, too, may be familiar with this little tune; we used to sing it in rounds whether at our troop meet-ings, over-night camping adventures or warm sum-mer day camps.
There is no doubt for me that God speaks to me through individuals, and that God has greatly blessed my life with a rich company of friends. By this I mean that blessing comes to me by means of the qual-ity of those friendships, not necessarily by the quanti-
ty. And in the short time that I have been a part of the St. Francis community, I am grateful for the continuation of this blessing.
Not so long ago, I was enjoying the companionship of a recent St. Francis friend. During our conversation, the image of an older friend entered my mind. The topic of conversation was what had nudged my memory of her, and I realized, sadly though, that I had allowed too much time to pass since our last conversation. Had it really been December? I thought. Yepit had. I should give her a call AND soon.
While driving home later that evening, this friend called me! It is strange how things work sometimes. She began, I was thinking of you earlier today and decided to call now My heart truly was warmed. I smiled and almost cried at the same time. I told her about my experience earlier in the day, also. Then we laughed and continued our conversation as if it was yesterday since we last talked.
In spite of how casual this particular incident may appear on the surface, it holds greater implication. I had missed seeing and talking with my friend, but had become too distracted with other things. My thoughts then wandered as to how have I been in my relationship with God? I found that this incident had heightened my aware-ness of Gods presence in my life. Had I been allowing some of those same distrac-tions to steal away the time I set aside to be in quiet stillness with God? Maybe late-ly, I have not been as disciplined with my devotional time with God as I would like to think. Once again, God has gotten my attention through yet another gentle nudge intended to help me redirect my thinking and way of daily living.
In Christs service,
Deacon Rebecca

Kids Korner FROM JuLY From the Kids Space
We made a craft in Sunday School on July 12. The kids made a shape out of play
dough to give to each other that they could use as they do God's work. One person
made an alligator and when asked how that would help
in doing God's work, the answer was to not snap at
people.
Another shape was a penguin to remind
people to chill while doing God's work.
The last shape was a heart to remember to be loving.
The kids wrote prayers July 19 of blessings for everyday use. The kids learned
to bless something is to thank God for that thing. Below are the kids prayers.
* I am thankful for my family and cats.
* I am thankful for Simon and Remy.
* Thank you for my friends and family. I'm also thankful for the clubs my friends
and I have started. Also, for Kona, Nature's Horizon, Mom, Dad, Abby, Jasmine, So-
phie, Roman, Emerson, Riley, Olivia, and Natalie.
* I'm thankful for food, water, and a house. I am also thankful for my family for
taking care of me.
* Thank you for people who fight for our country.
* I'm thankful that I don't have aquagentic urticaria.
July 26
The kids learned the disciples of Jesus had to row for 3 or 4 miles when Jesus
walked on the water. The kids thought of several places that are close to 3 or 4 miles
away from the church including Hidden Valley, Rockwood Reservations, Six Flags,
Wal Mart, Route 66 State Park, and the Library. Of course, some distances are clos-
er and some long but we all agreed the disciples would have appreciated the closer
distances but dislikes the longer ones!

School Supplies/School Shoes
Every child loves to have fresh, new shoes (that fit!) and school supplies before
returning to school. Shopping for those things is a time-honored tradition in many
households. Unfortunately, shoes and school supplies, especially with families with
more than one child, are just too expensive. We can help, and need to do so fairly
soon as school begins for students on August 12 for Pacific and August 13 for Eure-
ka and Wildwood.
Our shoe drive has been underway for several weeks. If you got a students gen-
der and size for shoe buying, please bring the shoes, labeled, back to church no later
than August 2. Pastor Sally will take them to Agape House on August 3 for delivery
to the program providing shoes.
Providing supplies to help fill school requirement lists is a little easier. Any kind
of marker, kid-friendly glue, zip-lock bags, kleenex, pencils, crayons pens, colored
pencils, tape, paper, folders. the list goes on and on will be used and appreciat-
ed by the clients of the Eureka Food Pantry. Please just deposit your contributions
in the deluxe, newly-restored red wagon at the Lodge. Any time in August or Sep-
tember is fine for back-to-school supplies. Who knows? St. Francis gifts of sup-
plies for school may show up at the pantry before our rain-soaked tomatoes do!

That means a lot of children will

Earthy Soul
Earths crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Aurora Leigh,bk. VII, line 820
What a marvelous description of creation: Earth is crammed with heaven all
Gods work is afire for those who can see it! Well, we know Moses saw it for sure,
and took off his shoes because he was on holy ground. Most of us see the fire some-
times in the dramatic beauty of the Rocky Mountains, in the wild beauty of a storm
at sea, or in the delicate scent of a Lily of the Valley. When we can stop, take off our
metaphorical shoes, and praise God for creation, thats a good thing.
But to sit round that bush and pluck blackberries, well thats praise
and blessing as well, and then the blessings just go on and on at
least they did at St. Francis this summer.
Our most local grower, one with a truck farm on Sunrise Drive, had
this view of a bush. Glorious, abundant, yummy creation! He patient-
ly plucked the blackberries, boxed them up and sold them from the
caravan in front of his house. Sally Hader had waited for those black-
berries all winter, and when they were ready she bought some berries. What a glori-
ous, yummy blessing they were for her and her family!
Sally scored another couple of pints and made pie for coffee hour at church!
Folks were grateful and not greedy; still, not everyone who want-
ed pie got some. There was no more sharing of the blackberry
blessing on that day.
Sally went home, pulled strings of an old friendship to score
more berries and made another pie. Glorious, abundant, yummy
pie! This time the blessed blackberry pie came to the Parish
House to feed the Crafternooners.
Blackberry blessings did not end here. Leftover pie (there was a little) went
home to hungry husbands, and the recipe was shared so that others could showcase
the blessings of blackberries.

Sometimes we do not see that every common bush is afire with God. When we
do, we take off our shoes and praise God from that holy ground, wherever it is.
When we share the fire with one another, Gods creation can be
praised on and on and on down the line.
.We wont be plucking blackberries from these bushes again
until next summer. But we can find ways to share with one an-
other the beauties and the bounties of Gods creation, every sea-

Hospitality @ Coffee Hour Some congregations refer to Coffee Hour as the
third sacrament. While there may be a grain of
truth in that, what coffee hour really is for us is an
opportunity to share and to experience hospitality.
This is surely one of our most pleasant and easiest
shared ministries.
It is a shared ministry and roles change week to
week. It works out fairly well. Some of us bring
goodies, some of us provide the fair-trade coffee or
cream, some get to church early enough to set this
up. In the past, the sexton assigned for the week
has been responsible for the cleanup and usually has
a few people helping.
The role of the sexton is changing, and will no longer include the after-church
clean-up and close-down activities. Hospitality still needs to be cleaned up. Please
look around before you leave and see what you can do to help. Pushing in chairs,
washing your coffee cup and placing it on the tray, putting trash in the trash and re-
cycling in the recycling bin all these tiny jobs can be done by everyone, even if
leaving early.

Prayer for St. Francis We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living
God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus
Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our
words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe
harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.

Amazon Review of Long Man "A river called Long Man has coursed through East Tennessee from time immemori-al, bringing sustenance to the people who farm along its banks and who trade among its small towns. But as Long Man opens, the Tennessee Valley Authoritys plans to dam the river and flood the town of Yuneetah for the sake of progressto bring electricity and jobs to the regionare about to take effect. Just a few days remain before the river will rise, and most of the town has been evacuated. Among the hold-outs is a young, headstrong mother, Annie Clyde Dodson, whose ancestors have lived for generations on her mountaintop farm; shell do anything to ensure that her three-year-old daughter, Gracie, will inherit the familys land. But her husband wants to make a fresh start in Michigan, where hes found work that will bring the family a more secure future. As the deadline looms, a storm as powerful as the emo-tions between them rages outside their door. Suddenly they realize that Gracie is no-where to be found. Has the little girl simply wandered off into the rain? Or has she been taken by Amos, the mysterious drifter who has come back to Yuneetah, perhaps to save his hometown in a last, desperate act of violence? Suspenseful, visceral, gorgeously told, Long Man is a searing portrait of a tight-knit community brought together by change and crisis, and of one family fac-ing a terrifying ticking clock. A novel set in history that resonates with our own times, it is a dazzling and unforgettable tour de force." (www.amazon.com)

9 full graham crackers (18 squares)
3 cups light whipped topping, divided
1 pound fresh strawberries, thickly sliced
1 cup fresh blueberries
1. Place the jam in a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high power for 15 seconds, or until mostly melted.
2. Break the sheets of graham crackers in half. Arrange 9 (of the 18) squares on the bottom of an 8-inch square pan. (Note: there will be a small space between the crackers.) Repeat with remaining crackers, jam, and whipped topping.
3. Cover, and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight. Within an hour or two of serv-ing, top with remaining sliced strawberries and blueberries.

Members Present: Sally Weaver, vicar; Joe OReilly; Suzanne Jones, treasur-er; Bob Champlin; Jim Eckhardt; Sue Schmidt; Sylvia Ahmad; Donna Bernert; Rebecca Barger, deacon; Jim Bowlin; Sally Hader; Jackie Selle, clerk.
Opening Business:
Sylvia moved and Joe OReilly seconded that we approve the minutes from the May 2015 meeting. The motion passed.
Treasurers Report
Pledge income is still lower than expected. The finance committee will be meeting soon to discuss the budget. Our goal has been to increase Sallys salary every six months, and we are due to increase it be another 5%.
Upon approval at this meeting we will submit our annual diocesan appeal re-quest. It is an estimate of what we would like to have for our 2016 budget.
Jim Eckhardt moved that we accept the treasurers report subject to audit ap-proval, and Donna Bernert seconded. The motion passed.
The three suggestions from the audit have been addressed.
Vicars Report
Sally requested that we change the date of our July meeting to July 12.
We are still looking for greeters for the second service.
Rebecca is making a photo inventory for insurance purposes.
Sally will be out of town from July 13-24. No supply priests are available, so someone from St. Martins will be with us on July 21.
We will include our report regarding use of the Thompson fund in our dioce-san request.
The property purchase is nearly finished and ready to close.
We have installed a programmable thermostat to make the parish house more comfortable for community groups.
Sally contacted the Masons about the excessive trash last week. They were unaware that a group who used the facility left the trash and have promised to monitor it more carefully.
The executive committee is still in the process of looking at capital campaign con-sultants. Kevin Broom has prepared a matrix for analyzing the information from the four different candidates. The executive committee will meet on July 2 and
