Heat GhallengesJuly RideFSThe drive to the Atwood - Westbrow ride
should have indicated the uncertaintythat
awaited us. The plateau of the mountain
was filled with low misty clouds- sort of
eerie. We traveled he rough logging roadsto the greatoverlook at 2000 plus feet. We
were ready to ride! During ride
preparation, a park employee, Allen
Padgett,providedvery helpful information
regarding the trail and levels of difficulty.
We startedout and quickly realized how
fun the downhill was, but a severe climb
wouid match the ioss in aititude - reality
check. This was not to be a single
occurrence. Looking to reach the famed
3.8 mile marker(the road intersection),we
were all astonishedwe had been on the
trail over an hour and not yet reached the
marker. We made it, but not before Steve
literally took a break * chain break. Heat
made us decide o eliminateabout 8 miles
from our planned ride. We hit the single
track and Mickie apparently disturbed a
bee's slumber. It foueht back and sent her
down. A quick essonn Bee Sting101avoidedany allergiccomplications.Weheaded ack o the parkingarea ookingfor acoolswirn.Thesrvimming olewasnot found. We turned back toBirmingham ftera stop n Mentone.
Chocolocca Iron Legsride provedtohavea great urn out. In total 16 local
riders tackled the heat and Iron Legstrail. The tight single track requiredseveral estsbeforecompletion. We hadfast riders preparing or the race andthose enjoying (?) the warm summerdav. See ll theridersnside.
