  • What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have

works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and

one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no

works, is dead. James 2:14-17 (NRSV)

A young woman called me just now to thank our church for helping her pay her city sewer bill.

She is going to school full time and also is working two jobs. Moreover, her boyfriends mother (but not her boyfriend) is living with her this summer because the mother has COPD, and her

normal residence is not air conditioned. The water supply to the house was to be turned off yes-

terday if she did not pay several hundred dollars in back sewer bills. We had two days to respond

    to the emergency.

As I do in these cases, with the young womans permission I posted the need on Meet the Need, a website that is monitored by seven or eight churches that are members of Terre Haute Ministries,

Inc., a community ministry organization of which our church was a founding member. The young womans need was too great for our church to satisfy by ourselves, but the combined pledges from the THM churches were sufficient, when combined with other funds the woman was able to

raise, to pay the bill and forestall a water cutoff. I was able to make a pledge on behalf of Central

Presbyterian Church because of your donations to our Deacons Fund and because of the Dea-

cons willingness to allocate a portion of that fund to this type of need. Over the course of the last year, our church has donated about $925 for utility needs, and through THM and Meet the

Need, this has been leveraged into $4,600 of total needs satisfied.

A couple of years ago, Terre Haute Ministries surveyed the local community to determine the

greatest unmet needs. Food is the greatest need, but it is largely met through local food pantries,

soup kitchens, and the like. Housing is a tremendous need, but we at THM decided this was be-

yond our ability to tackle. The next largest need was assistance with utilities, so we began plan-

ning the system with Meet the Need that is currently operating. We are in negotiations now with

Salvation Army in the hopes that they would agree to be the central intake point for these needs and would publicize the needs to the THM churches through the Meet the Need website.

Were not there yet, but please pray for a good partnership to result. (Im currently providing the intake point, and for many reasons I cant continue doing this long-term.) Another prayer need is for someone to take over as the THM treasurer. It does not require a CPA because our tax-

exempt forms and returns are fairly simple.

Please continue supporting the Deacons Fund. It is doing real good not only in our own church,

but also in the broader community.

The family prayer group meets on Mondays at 11:00 am at the church. Lunch is served ONLY on the 2nd Monday of each month. Childcare is provided.

The next Parents Night Out/Youth Movie Night will be August 7. Please let the office know if your child(ren) will be attending. All children need to bring a pil-

low and may bring a blanket. It is drive-in movie night!

T3EM is August 18. Supper and childcare will be provided by the CN Commis-sion.

Summer Mission trip: Nine hard working and fun loving people traveled to Buck-horn, KY to assist the Buckhorn Lake Area Presbyterian Church with their VBS on

July 16-19. Everyone worked (and played) so hard that there are few pictures. Here is the group ready for departure:

Crimson, Samuel and Isabelle made their churches proud with their willingness to provide leadership and their talents with the families and children at Buckhorn. Pastors, Tom & Gayle Burns and the accompanying adults appreciate their servant

hearts. In addition, gifts from Centrals Mission Committee are making it possible for much needed repairs to be done to two homes in the area.

  • New Salt Shakers Start in September!

The Salt Shakers Dinners mix 7 9 people for dinner in a home. The host schedules the evening and provides the main

dish, and other participants are assigned a vegetable, salad,

or dessert. For each meeting the participants have been

shaken so they get to be with someone different. It is a great

way to meet new people and learn new things about old

    friends.

Again this year there will be four meetings so that we can

work around the Holiday Bazaar, Fifth Sundays, and other

busy times of the year. Groups will meet

    During September or October

    During January or February

    During March or April

    During June or July

If youd like to be involved in Salt Shakers this year, sign up on the list posted in the Fellowship Hall by Sunday, August

23, or call the church office. Hosts, non-hosts, singles, cou-

ples, and alternates are all encouraged. Once everyone has

signed up, the schedule for the year will be finalized and sent

to those involved. It is truly a wonderful way to get to know

your church familyand have four great dinners!

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS With a

new school year on the horizon, it is time to

get your backpack/school bag ready, and that

includes getting a blessing for the school year

on Sunday, August 9. This is for children,

youth, college students, instructors and school

staff on all levels. Bring your backpack to worship and there will be a special

    blessing as the Childrens Moment.

One Child. One Hour. One Church. One School. For 20

years Kids Hope USA has been partnering churches and

schools together to make a difference in the lives of at-risk

elementary school students. Central Presbyterian Church

will begin its own partnership with Deming Elementary

School during the 2015 - 2016 school year.

There are several opportunities to get involved in the Kids

Hope program. We are looking for people who will be able

to serve as mentors who will commit to meeting with one child once a week for the course of

the school year. People who mentor will also be paired with a prayer partner, someone who

will commit to pray for both the mentor and the child being mentored. There is also a need for

substitute mentors as well as people who would be willing to help with special events. Please

prayerfully consider what you could do to make a difference in the life of a child at Deming Ele-

mentary. Time spent investing in the life of a child is always time well spent. For more infor-

mation please contact Suzanne Downs at [email protected].

Do you recall the hot temperatures one week in July, and all the rain

that we usually get in the spring?

    That was bizarre!

Now August has arrived, and it is one month closer to the

    Central Presbyterian Church Fall Bazaar!

For weeks the Bazaar Crafters have been cutting, sewing, stuffing, knit-

ting, sanding and painting fantastic items for our November 6th and 7th event. No

matter what bizarre things may happen in the future, you can count on the Bazaar

Crafters! Theyll be creating interesting things every Wednesday from 10:00 until

2:00. Feel free to join them to work, or just bring your lunch to eat so you can visit.

    Theres nothing bizarre about that!

A belated thank you for your concern, calls,

cards and prayers during my bout with pneumo-

nia last month. A special thank you to Lant for

his hospital visit and prayers. Thanks again.

Your kind expressions were so meaningful.

    Norma Shaw

A second belated thank you for your concern,

thoughts, and prayers for our son-in-law, Tom

Bauer. God has given him another opportunity

to live with 2 new mechanical heart valves and a

bypass graft. He continues in rehab but is pro-

gressing. Thanks again to everyone for your

    concern and prayers.

    Lowell and Norma Shaw

    Deacons of Central Presbyterian Church,

I apologize that I dont know everyones

name but wanted to thank all of you for

your kindness in providing food at the fu-

neral of my mom, Eunice Osburn. Your

kindness and consideration is so appreciat-

ed. Central Presbyterian was such an im-

portant part of my mothers life and while

she was able, her memories of her dear

friends there and her consistent faith sus-

tained her. Thank you also for remember-

ing her with cards over recent years. I

know she is now at peace with God and

has every memory she could want or need

    at her fingertips.
