Balance is supposed to be a good thing, which is why President Obama keeps using “balanced approach” as a euphemism for what he has also

more bluntly described as “massive, job-killing tax in-creases.”

At the same time, however, some of Obama’s most fervid supporters are complaining that there’s too much balance--in the media. On the New York Times website, former Enron adviser Paul Krugman rants that “the cult of balance” has “poisoned our political system”:

Think about what’s happening right now. We have a crisis in which the right is making insane demands, while the president and Democrats in Congress are bending over backward to be accommodating. . . .

So what do most news reports say? They portray it as a situation in which both sides are equally partisan, equally intransigent – because news reports always do that. . . .

America needs more media bias, claim some on the left

Clark Gable, the scandal that wasn’t

Clark Gable married five times, slept with nearly all of his co-stars, and cheat-ed on everyone. In just about every mov-ie in which he plays the romantic lead, he cajoles, spanks, slaps, or otherwise mis-treats the object of his affection. In other words, he’s a b---------, but he’s one steamy b---------. And he challenged the image of the leading man in 1930s Hollywood, offering a barrel-chested alternative to the fleet-footed likes of Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. He looked very much as if someone had taken a swarthy pirate, given him a facial, parted his hair to the side,

Tea Party ‘Terrorists’According to the website Politico, Vice President Joe Biden agreed “with a

line of argument made by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) at a two-hour, closed-door Democratic Caucus meeting” that congressional tea party members “acted like terrorists” in the way they stood against attempts to raise taxes and force spend-ing reductions as part of the debt-ceiling deal.

Biden denied making the comparison. Given the heated rhetoric behind and in front of the scenes, the use of such a phrase, particularly in light of Biden’s known salty language, has credibility.

Apparently tea party critics are constitutional illiterates. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution begins, “We the people.” Rights come from God, not politicians who think they are God. We grant power to our leaders to serve us. We are not their slaves.

The reality, of course, is that we already have a centrist president--actually a moderate conservative president. . . .

You have to ask, what would it take for these news organizations and pundits to actually break with the convention that both sides are equally at fault?

The amusingly named Ari Melber, writing in the hard-left magazine The Nation, echoes the theme, com-plaining that reporters are “nursing Balance Bias.” He quotes extensively from Jay Rosen, a New York Univer-sity scholar who gives an intellectual gloss to the complaint that the media are insufficiently biased in favor of the left:

Rosen, a prolific media critic who has a theory, developed in a series of essays that are both elegant and reproachful, that today’s political reporters are on a futile “quest for innocence” when reporting political disputes. By innocence, Rosen means “a determination not to be implicat-

Commentaryed, enlisted or seen by the public as involved.” I asked him how that works on this debt story.

“Asymmetry in a highly contested situation fries the circuits of the press,” Rosen said via e-mail this week. “The bigger the stakes, the more dangerous it feels for reporters to reflect that asymmetry in their accounts,” he proposed. That makes sense, since often it’s “the big lie” that gets more traction than little fibs. So the political press rebuted [sic] Sarah Palin’s spin about opposing “The Bridge to Nowhere” in 2008, a low-stakes example, but they back down on a market-shaking feud like the debt fight. And Rosen suggests that while Demo-crats or Talking Points Memo or Eugene Robinson may call out the problem, that doesn’t actually do much.

“The people screaming about an asymmetrical situation that has been artifi-cially balanced are likely to be on one side of the contested ground, right? This fries the circuits even more, adding to the danger [for innocent reporters],” he says. This is also your brain on Balance Bias.

This is a fascinating development. Conservatives have spent decades belly-aching about media bias, but their complaints have become less bitter in recent years with the rise of alternatives outside the so-called mainstream media: talk radio, independent bloggers and especially Fox News Channel.

Turnabout is fair play, and now people on the left grumble incessantly that Fox fails to live up to its “fair and balanced” slogan. They insist it actually slants right. That’s undoubtedly true of its commentary programs, such as “Hannity” and “The O’Reilly Factor,” but news shows like “Special Report With Bret Bai-er” are at least as down-the-middle as anyone else’s.

But for the likes of Krugman, Melber and Rosen, down-the-middle journal-ism is the problem. They want the press corps to accept their own political doc-trines as the truth and to treat anyone who departs from them as, in Krugman’s words, “insane.”

Fair and balanced…Fox News makes no bones about not supporting liberals and the left. It has and continues to support politicians and causes from the right to the very, very far right. My opinion of Fox News is that in reality it is pointing out that major media — print (New York Times, Washinton Post) and television (ABC, NBC, CBS) — are leaning to the left. Fox News is leveling the playing field with its right bent.If Fox News changed its catch words to “fair and counter-balanced,” I think detractors would be devoid of ammunition. From our readers . . .As a grandson of W.C. Fields I was de-lighted to see the article on my grand-father in your August 1, 2011 issue. It was nice to see he is still remembered and that his humor is much appreci-ated. The article was well written and very enjoyable. Thank you for publish-ing it and thanks for appreciating W.C. Fields comedic genius.

I loved the piece! on Battlefield Angels. Many thanks, I really appreciate the coverage! Regards, Scott McGaughUSS Midway Museum

Gentlemen,

It was with interest when I read your publication’s July 1, 2011 article enti-tled “What an Ordeal! Taxes.” At first, it began to read as a historical/educa-tional piece about how taxes were ad-ministered by historical governments and societies to fund societal services and functions. But at the end, in my view, it fell off the educational cliff be-cause it failed to address, mention or explain the rationale concerning the

current taxation system that has been in place in our nation for the last sev-eral generations - the progressive tax structure. Instead, your article merely went into a de facto expose about various taxation ideas and perceptions that have been and are advocated by self-titled ‘fiscal conservative’ and libertarian groups. In my view, given your articles glaring (and apparently intentional) omission, your publication performed a disser-vice to MOST of its readers.

Most sincerely, Michael J. Smith, M.P.A.current ‘business manager’ at Naval Medical Center San Diego

The arrogance in the reported slander by Biden and Doyle is what voters hate most about many politicians. They see them as out of touch and unwilling to face challenges average citizens must confront when it comes to their personal budgets and behavior.

It is not tea party people who are the “terrorists.” A terrorist seeks to de-stroy. Who is the real destroyer in the debt-ceiling debate? Who wants to con-

tinue spending money we don’t have, borrowing it from nations like China that would be happy to destroy us if our politicians don’t do it first? Tea party people simply want to make their government accountable again and for this they are called “terrorists”?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mc-Connell acknowledged there would not

have been a deal in which taxes are not raised and spending curtailed had it not been for tea party members. He is right. Asking career politicians not to spend other people’s money is like ask-ing Lady Gaga to sing from the Great American Songbook, dressed in conser-vative clothing. For her, that would be an unnatural act.

What we are witnessing in Amer-ica is a re-awakening to the idea that the people own the power and do not have to sit idly by while the country they love and often sacrifice for is torn apart by irresponsible political lead-ers who wouldn’t have their jobs if the rest of us weren’t paying their salaries and benefits. The debt-ceiling debate showed that more people are demand-ing their government live within our means. We are tired of spending money we don’t have on things we don’t need.

Instead of hacking away at defense,

should this “bipartisan commission” not reach the bill’s spending targets, how about closing the Department of Education, which does not educate, the Department of Energy, which pro-duces no energy, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which builds no homes?

Far from being a spent force, as many predicted, individual citizens are rediscovering a power many may have thought they no longer possessed. Heading into the 2012 election, this renewed sense that the power to make or break a nation does not reside in Washington, but rather in the hearts and minds of its citizens, will add to a sense of hope that real change is about to happen.

While tea party critics are re-read-ing the Constitution, they should also consult the Declaration of Indepen-dence. That philosophical foundation of the Constitution reserves the right of the people to change their govern-ment when it no longer serves the in-

terests of its citizens. The Declaration outlined the proper relationship be-tween government and citizens, noting that government derives its “just pow-ers from the consent of the governed” (and) “whenever any Form of Govern-ment becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to al-ter or to abolish it and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its pow-ers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

The British no doubt considered those who wrote and believed such things “terrorists.” We call them patri-ots. And those patriots just might force the vice president and his boss out of a job next November. That is their right. They have it in their power.

Hi Dr. Seare,

The military decided they wanted to measure me today (monday), so we did that and the measurement was just ne; I was well within what I needed. In fact, I measured in at 35 inches around the waist whereas I was 39-41 depending beforehand. For what it's worth; you've made a very big, and cost-eective change in my life, and I wanted to be sure to say thank you for it again. I've got a body now that will keep me more mobile, motivated, and overall healthier than before, which is priceless. Thank you again.

Respectfully, DanielPS. My wife sends her thanks as well.

BE BIKINI CONFIDENTTHIS SUMMERWill celebrity news

suffer because of the Murdoch story?By Liz Smith

“THEY WANT their ... paper to give them the same kind of titil-lation that well-to-do people get from novels about divorce, mur-der, seduction, forgery. Fill it with crime, not excluding the unmen-tionable sort, and it will sell like hotcakes!”

So said Lord Northcliffe when he started the British tab-loid brand of journalism that the UK has cherished for more than 100 years. And Lord North-cliffe never dreamed of the im-pact TV and the Internet added to the mix. (Let’s just say in the war against Rupert Murdoch, the Brits have managed to add their own lawbreaking and criminality, as well as lumping in the police!)

Now people are asking of the Murdoch story if celebrity journalism will die down? Reporter Hannah Betts inquires if celebrity worship has had its day? Well, I don’t think so. The only thing I can say is that it would be great if we internation-

al gossips developed some real celebrities to fill the ranks of tabloids, TV and the Internet. True stars who have accom-plished something that we can inquire about. I’d be the first to mourn the loss of a newspa-per anywhere, and I do mean The New York Post, which had already begun its marked downfall when it fired me sev-eral years ago. But it would be fun, just now and then, to read a name on Page Six that one

can recognize or care about.Britain’s Miss Betts writes of immediate changes should tabloids disappear.

“Most immediately there will be a whole sub-species of wannabes whose antics will go unrecorded and unrewarded; monsters the tabloids created, left wander-ing without a home.” Oh, I don’t know; I’ll bet the weekly “catch up” and “made up” magazines and the bloggers on the Internet and the innumerable Hollywood

TV “news” shows will be able to fill the gap. It’s true that if Rupert Murdoch closed down all his British newspaper hold-

ings, it wouldn’t be much of a loss when weighed against his other considerable holdings. Many of his advisers hope fer-vently that this will happen. We have to wait to see how Murdoch’s U.S. holdings — Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, the Dow and the movie company 20th Century Fox, all fare in the coming months.

Oh, one more thing. New York poli-tician Peter King — a rabid Republi-can — was the first U.S. politico to call for an FBI investigation of News Corp. Then, a lot of Democrats got in on that. Advice to Democrats — let it alone. Al-low events to brew and grow at their own speed. Don’t fall into the trap of making it look like an ideological witch-hunt. Believe me, it will backfire.

Navy vet’s home gets an“Extreme Makeover”

The mean girls clubBy Crystal Arriaga

Almost all of us have been there; eager to find new friends within the unit and somehow always stumble upon individuals who ask, “What rank is YOUR husband?!” To be fair wives are curious and may not be aware of this faux pas. They may not know how to begin to mesh with others in the unit/group. The question is generally asked with positive intentions to relate to you but often just sounds rude and conde-scending.

Although if you answer the ques-tion and then notice a silence followed by a sniff, huff sound or an “Ohhh…” then you know you’re in the presence of one of those wives. Politely excuse yourself, avoid them like the plague and maybe buy her some Allegra be-cause unless she has severe allergies there is no excuse for the sound ef-fects.

This isn’t high school or the movie Mean Girls. Some ‘name drop’ their husbands’ rank and think they rate higher than Chesty Puller. We do not DO our husbands’ jobs and most are not sworn IN the Marine Corps. Wives who use their husbands’ rank for what in their minds is entitlement or power are hilariously mistaken. Wives are

many things but shouldn’t utilize a de-meaning attitude. Wives with noses in the air and degrading undertones can join a ‘Sit on our High Horses Club’ and drink tea with their pinkies in the air all day and they probably do.

Fact is though if we do not lean on each other to learn, deal, vent and help one another we’re useless for the next generation of wives. They sincerely want to learn from us and how we somehow managed to get by through everything.

Every husband is just as valuable to the Marine Corps as the next one. As you can obviously see between the dif-ferent specialties there are Marines that have more rank with few med-als and some with less rank and many medals but either way we should re-spect them equally for their service. The reality is as wives we can only hang on for the ride.

Don’t fret though there are plenty of ladies who simply seek a normal, not caddy, not competitive or narcissis-tic, shoulder to lean on kind of friend. Avoid the shenanigans and choose to be up-range from the drama. Try to steer clear of any negativity that can hurt your chances of finding some re-ally outstanding and loyal sisters.

Increasing black officer numbersThe Commandant announced recently that his goal is to double the number of blacks among the Marine

Corps’ officers. Currently, there are 1,326 black officers serving in the Marine Corps, and by raising the fig-ure to 2,860, it would better reflect the percentage of the black population in the U.S. Gen. Amos’ promise to increase diversity is a marked change for the Corps’, as it was the last service to allow blacks to serve and there has never had a black commandant or four-star general.

Legion concerned about VA’sPTS treatment

Jimmie L. Foster, head of the nation’s largest vet-erans service organization, says is he “greatly con-cerned” about eh widespread use of an apparently ineffective medication by the VA doctors treating patients with post traumatic stress. According to Foster, fully 20 percent of the nearly 87,000 veter-ans treated for PTS were given a medication that has proven to be nearly useless. The two drugs that are government-approved to treat PTS are Zoloft and Paxil, both antidepressants.

Foster said he is urging Congress to conduct hear-ings on the ongoing difficulties experienced by DoD and VA in treatment of PTS and traumatic brain in-jury.

Camp Pendleton may be home to thousands of Marines - arguably the most serious and well-trained branch of the military - but on Satur-

day at Del Mar Beach, there was a lighter mood to the famed base’s proceedings. While hundreds of Ma-rines and their families looked on, 20 surfers took to the restricted base waters to compete in Red Bull Ri-vals. The surf event played off the East Coast / West Coast rivalry that exists between Marines trained at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) on the West Coast and Marines trained at Paris Island on the East Coast.

The competition format saw ten surfers from each coast (boot camp) going head-to-head in a 150 min-ute tag team format, where one surfer from the East

and one from the West entered the water together and surfed their best three waves. They then ran to shore and tagged a teammate to go out and do the same. Judges scored the best two waves of the three for each surfer. Judges included members of the National Surf League and renowned waterman and stand up paddle champion Kai Lenny.

With surf knee to waist high with occasional shoul-der high sets and clean sections mixed in, the Marines were able show off their skills and have fun at the same time. While the East Coast team acknowledged the lack of home-field advantage could be a problem, they felt confident they could use the smaller, East Coast-style conditions of the day to their benefit, and

were determined to prove themselves. The two teams took opposing tactical strategies - the West Coast Team sending their strongest surfers into the water first, gambling that conditions were at their best and the East Coast holding their best surfers back, hoping for conditions to improve.

The West Coast seemed to have the better strategy as the early conditions proved the best of the day, and as they jumped out to an early lead. The lead was so significant that it looked as though the contest might prove severely one-sided despite the East Coast Team’s best efforts. However as the day progressed, the East Coast narrowed the gap significantly, reducing their 10 point deficit to almost a tie. The East Coast comeback was lead by a very strong session by SSgt Chris Mulcany, who earned the highest score of the day with a 7.5, and with it a surfboard as a prize.

In the end the East Coast fell just short of victory, as the final score stood at East Coast 43.5 and West Coast 46.0. The East Coast team had the dubious honor of presenting the winning team with their prize - new surfboards for each team member. Although no Marine likes to lose, and the East Coast team was primed for a rematch, everyone shook hands, joked with each other and the overall vibe was one of com-radery and brotherhood.

East Coast, West Coast Marines battle it out in the surf

Commentary

By Cal Thomas

My father was a product of the Great Depression and World War II. Like so many others

of his generation, he, like his parents before him, knew how to “do without.”

When he told us, “we can’t afford it,” that did not mean our family was de-prived of material things we deserved, instead it marked a boundary not to be crossed because on the other side, wait-ing to greet us, were the twin demons of bad credit and financial ruin. “Always pay the bank,” was my father’s sound advice. And so I have, which is why my credit score re-mains high.

Not so with the United States gov-ernment. Under both parties, but especially free-spending Demo-crats, the greatest nation on Earth has seen its credit rating downgrad-ed from AAA to AA-plus, putting us on the same lev-el as Belgium and New Zealand.

This would be shameful if Amer-ica had any shame left. In our race to give everyone what they want, politicians have failed miserably to give us what we need.

Saying “no” is not in their vo-cabulary. Living within our means has been replaced with “entitle-ment,” “spread-ing the wealth around” and “fair-ness.” Instead of promoting people who have made right decisions that have al-lowed them to be self-sustaining and contribute to the nation’s health and strength, President Obama and con-gressional Democrats ridicule and seek to penalize the successful (while hap-pily receiving their campaign contribu-tions). Success and wealth are frowned upon, while failure and poverty are a kind of preferred righteousness worthy of being subsidized by the “evil” pro-ductive.

This attitude is the polar opposite of the optimistic, risk-taking and re-ward culture that built and sustained America through previous economic downturns. And it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Who will lead us out of this mess and make the neces-sary spending cuts?

Jimmy Carter, to whom President Obama is increasingly compared, at-tempted to sell “malaise” and retreat to a nation with optimism and progress in its DNA. It is no shame to be igno-rant of how to solve a problem as long

as you continue to press on toward a solution. However, it is a great shame to know how a problem can be solved and not solve it because you prefer the issue to remain an issue.

That is where we are with the re-cent debt-ceiling agreement. It means little to Standard & Poor’s analysts. In their decision to downgrade America’s pristine credit rating, S&P said it does not substantially reduce debt and they are not persuaded America is serious about doing so in the near future. The Obama administration’s response has been to attack S&P’s methodology. S&P has threatened to downgrade us again.

What don’t lib-erals understand about bloated gov-ernment? Instead of a commission made up of politi-cians who created the problem, out-side auditors with no political con-nections should be brought in and em-powered to elimi-nate every govern-ment agency that does not produce services essential to strengthening the nation.

They can start with the Depart-ments of Educa-tion, which does not educate, Ener-gy, which produc-es none, Housing and Urban De-velopment, which builds no houses and Veterans Af-fairs, whose re-sponsibilities can be handled by the Defense Depart-ment. Some of these -- and many

others -- were created as political gifts to various constituencies. We can’t af-ford them. They can be eliminated. Loads of money can be saved.

In April, Treasury Secretary Timo-thy Geithner said on the Fox Business Network there was “no risk” America’s credit rating would be downgraded. Like so many other forecasts by this administration, he was wrong.

Ric Edelman, chairman & CEO of Edelman Financial Services, rated by Barron’s as America’s top independent financial adviser, tells me the market’s downturn “is a political reaction, not an economic reaction. Soon, investors will realize their folly, and prices will recover nicely.” He adds, “The econo-my is improving. Growth is slower than we’d like, but growth it is ... the 500 big-gest companies in America are still sit-ting on $1 trillion in cash.”

Getting that $1 trillion off the side-lines will also require a different po-litical reaction. That will come in No-vember 2012, which cannot come fast enough.

America downgraded!

What don’t liberals un-derstand about bloated government? Instead of a commission made up of politicians who creat-ed the problem, outside auditors with no political connections should be brought in and empow-ered to eliminate every government agency that does not produce servic-es essential to strength-ening the nation.

When it comes to heart health, don’t miss a beat

Some good news has come out of a new study that looked into most effec-tive ways to prevent sudden cardiac death: maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise sig-nificantly reduces the risk of this condi-tion.

The research, published in the recent issue of the Journal of the Ameri-can Medical Association, focused on women. How-ever, its find-ings are also relevant for men, says Israel LoBue, owner of Fit Body Boot Camp in San Diego,.

“This is yet another body of medical evidence that clearly shows the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that includes physical fitness,” he says.

In the United States, sudden car-diac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpect-edly stops beating, causes more than 300,000 deaths every year. Among

main risk factors are heart disease, obesity, smoking, and inactivity.

“All these factors are inter-related,” LoBue points out. “Sedentary lifestyle

leads to obesity, which, in turn, can cause heart disease

– the leading killer of Americans. And, of

course, smoking is harmful to health in general.”

The new study, howev-er, found that those who don’t smoke, eat sen-sibly, maintain healthy weight, and exercise regularly, can

lower their risk of sudden cardiac

death by more than 90 percent. “Sometimes, even the

simplest preventive measures can go a long way,” LoBue notes. “These new findings prove once again that physi-cal activity and other healthy habits are real lifesavers.”

When it comes to preventing poten-tially serious complications of heart disease — including sudden cardiac arrest — regular exercise is beneficial in several ways, LoBue says.

“If you are overweight, it will help you lose the extra pounds and main-tain a healthy weight. It will also strengthen your cardiovascular sys-tem,” he says.

While any regimen that keeps you moving is beneficial, LoBue says inter-val training, which alternates a high-intensity workout with periods of low-intensity activity or rest, is especially effective in improving cardiovascular fitness and the body’s potential to burn fat.

“It provides a great workout for your heart, dramatic weight loss re-sults, and a leaner shape in less time than many other programs,” he says.

Those who already have heart dis-ease or any other medical condition should consult a doctor before start-ing interval training, LoBue suggests.

“In any case, there are plenty of other, less strenuous exercises that you could safely do to get yourself – and your heart – in the best possible shape,” he says.

Chappy’s On Eagle’s Wings

Real CourageIn the heat of the summer there is a lot

of time to kick back and think about life and things we ought to reflect on. One is the topic of courage. Real courage comes in many different forms. We have seen those who show great bravery in fighting wars, and those who risk their lives to res-cue another in dangerous waters, and so on.

People we call heroes because of their selfless, noble acts tend to come to mind when we ponder such a topic. However, there is also another type of quiet cour-age that we often don’t think about very much. It is the courage of self-restraint.

I read a story concerning Jack-ie Robinson that exemplifies this type of courage. When he became the first man of his race to play professional baseball, it was his-tory making.

The story goes that the presi-dent of the Brooklyn Dodgers asked Jackie if he had the courage to play the game despite the racial persecution they both knew lay ahead. Jackie asked if he was look-ing for a black man who was afraid to fight. The president replied that he was looking for a ballplayer with the courage not to fight.

Jackie showed that he did have that courage. Only by exercising tremendous restraint, even when others might have given in to anger, was he able to open the door of equality and open the eyes of the world to this kind of courage. The story concludes that people all over the globe saw a courageous Jackie Robinson play baseball. But only those behind the scenes saw an even larger hero, the hero who held back.

Another story of a ballplayer, Sandy Koufax, a Jewish pitcher with a sling like David’s for a left arm, announced that he wouldn’t play on the holiest day of his year, Yom Kipper. Koufax’s employer, the Los Ange- les Dodgers, respectfully pointed out that this was the first game of the 1965 World Series. Couldn’t he pitch just a little? “NO”, he said. But later, he pitched a shutout in games five and seven, and the Dodgers went on to win the series, 4-3.

During the “dog days of summer” with often relentless heat and crowds at the beaches, parks and amusement parks, we may want to take a few extra seconds when we are feeling angry and consider the courage not to react. Also, many of us have and are known to have the courage to fight the big battles, but do we have

the courage to overcome the desire to get even or lash out in our own personal battles? Do we have the courage to hold true to our standards and tra-ditions? Honor, Courage and Commitment…

I pray we do. We need to cre-ate that haven from the storms of life to be in our homes. May we focus our energies for the big battles of war, and have the courage to hold back at times when we feel like lashing out, and make peace in our daily personal lives.

Robert Louis Stevenson had once wrote, “Yours is not less noble because no drum beats before you when you go out into your daily battlefields, and no

crowds shout about your coming when you return from your daily victory or de-feat.”

A poem reflecting on this from Douglas Malloch reads:

Courage is to feel The daily daggers of relentless steelAnd keep on livingAs I’ve mentioned somewhat in a

previous article, Columbus had the type of courage we should all be try-ing to develop. He first had the cour-

age to explore uncharted wa-ters, to take on the unknown, and yet he also had the courage of self-restraint and persever-ance. He had to overcome great obsta-cles presented

by the naysayers of the day and yet continued to pursue his goals and ob-jectives without causing strife. He en-dured the ridicule and maintained his bearings, until he was finally granted the permission and backing to make his historic journey and discoveries. This kind of courage blesses the lives of others. This is the kind of courage we should earnestly strive to develop. If we did, the world would experience the ripple effects of our efforts.

I once was in a meeting with for-mer Senator and Astronaut Jake Garn, and he expressed a feeling about this kind of courage to hold back. He and his fellow Astronauts and Cosmonauts had the courage to venture into outer space, where they beheld the awesome, peaceful beauty of the world. Still, they felt saddened, knowing that people on every continent at which they gazed, were letting their anger and hatred for others overtake them, causing murders and wars. He said that he and his fellow explorers wished there were a way that all people could see the world from their vantage point; that the world is meant to be a spectacular and peace-ful place. If only all had the courage to work things out and to restrain their hostilities, holding back instead of fu-eling contention.

Even in these unsettling times of economic and other turmoil in the world today, I know that if we take time to reflect and thoughtfully choose the wiser, often more difficult path of restraining our hostility, we can all be great examples of courage and can even be heroes to those around us, in the battlefields of our daily life. May this be our focus and desire, is my prayer for this week.

It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy…

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Until next issue, may God bless you and our great nation.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Laurel and Hardy were one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy

double acts of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cin-ema. Composed of thin, English-man Stan Laurel (1890–1965) and heavy, American Oliver Hardy

(1892–1957) they became well known during the late 1920s to the mid-1940s for their visual slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and child-like friend of the pompous Hardy. They made over 100 films together, initially short films before expanding into fea-ture length films in the 1930s. Their films include Sons of the Desert (1933), the Academy Award winning short film The Music Box (1932), Babes in Toyland (1934), and Way Out West (1937). Har-dy’s catchphrase Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into! is still widely recognized.

Prior to the double act both were established actors with Laurel appear-ing in over 50 films and Hardy in over 250 films. Although the two comedians first worked together on the film The Lucky Dog (1921), this was a chance pairing and it was not until 1926, when both separately signed contracts with the Hal Roach film studio, that they began appearing in movie shorts to-gether.Laurel and Hardy officially be-came a team the following year in the silent short film Putting Pants on Phil-ip (1927). The pair remained with the Roach studio until 1940, then appeared in eight “B” comedies for 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1941 to 1945. Disappointed by the re-duced level of creative control they had had over their films they instead con-centrated on stage shows from 1946 to 1950, embarking on a music hall tour of England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1950 they made their last film, a French/Ital-ian co-production called Atoll K, before retiring from the screen. In total they appeared together in 107 films. They starred in 40 short sound films, 32 short silent films and 23 full length feature films, and made 12 guest or cameo ap-pearances, including the recently-dis-covered Galaxy of Stars (1936).

A common comedy routine was a tit-for-tat fight. Their silent film Big Busi-ness (1929), which includes one of these routines, was added to the Library of Congress as a national treasure in 1992. Notable Laurel traits included crying like a baby while being berated and

scratching his hair when in shock. On December 1, 1954, the team made their only American television appearance, surprised by Ralph Edwards on his live NBC-TV program, This Is Your Life.

The works of Laurel and Hardy have been re-released in numerous theatri-cal reissues, television revivals, 16mm and 8mm home movies, feature-film compilations, and home video since the 1930s. They were voted the seventh greatest comedy act in a 2005 UK poll by fellow comedians. The duo’s sig-nature tune, known variously as “The Cuckoo Song”, “Ku-Ku”, or “The Dance of the Cuckoos”, played on the opening credits of their films. The official Lau-rel and Hardy appreciation society is known as The Sons of the Desert, after a fraternal society in their film of the same name.

Gone But Not Forgotten Humor

A Roadway driver is driving east on Route 66 he sees a truck driving west and the CB crackles to life . “Hey Roadway driver whos the two biggest poofs in America?” comes from the CB.The Roadway driver replies . “I dont know”. The other trucker says “ You and your brother.” Well the Road-way driver gets all annoyed but the other driver tells him “Its just a joke - tell it to the next truck you see.”Well the Roadway driver drives for about an hour an finally sees another truck .he gets on the CB and says “ Hey other truck do you know who the two big-gest poofs in the world are?”The other trucker says “ I dont know who?” The roadway driver replies “Me and my brother”

A man goes out and buys the best car available in the US or Europe, a 2001 Turbo BeepBeep. It is the best and most expensive car in the world, and it runs him $500,000. He takes it out for a spin and, while doing so, stops for a red light. An old man on a moped, both looking about 90 years old, pulls up next to him.The old man looks over the sleek, shiny surface of the car and asks “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?”.The dude replies “A 2001 Turbo BeepBeep. They cost $500,000.””Thats a lotta money!” says the old man, shocked. “Why does it cost so much?””Cause this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!” states the cool dude proudly. The old man asks “Can I take a look inside?””Sure” replies the owner. So the old man pokes his head in the win-dow and looks around. Leaning back on his moped, the old man says “Thats a pretty nice car, alright!”Just then the light changes, so the guy decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 320. Suddenly, the guy notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer!Whhhoooooooooossssshhhhhh! Some-thing whips by him! Going maybe three times as fast! The guy wonders “what on earth could be going faster than my Turbo BeepBeeP?” Then, ahead of him, he sees a dot coming toward him.Whooooooooooosh! Goes by again! And, it almost looked like the old man on the moped! Couldnt be thinks the guy. How could a mo-ped outrun a Turbo BeepBeep? Again, he sees a dot in his rearview mirror!WhoooooooshhhhhhhhKa-BbbbblaMMMMM! It plows into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end.The guy jumps out and discovers

it is the old man! Of course, the mo-ped and the old man are hurting for certain. The guy runs up to the dying old man and asks “You re hurt bad! Is there anything I can do for you?”The old man replies “Yeah. Unhook my suspenders from the side-view mirror on your car!”

A man was driving up a steep and narrow mountain road.A woman was driving down the same road. As they passed each other, the woman leaned out thewindow and yelled, “Pig!” The man immediately leaned out his window and replied,”Moron!” They continue on their way and as the man rounded thenext corner, he crashes into a pig in the middle of theroad.

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to

be before they are considered assassi-nated instead of just murdered?

If money doesn’t grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round?

Why do you have to “put your two cents in”...but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”? Where’s that extra penny going to?

The following morning, found us at the daily jazz brunch at the Court of Two Sisters, another New Orleans in-stitution. Although it has the French Quarter’s largest outdoor courtyard, it retains a charming, romantic am-bience. A trio played Dixieland jazz while we loaded and reloaded our plates from their buffet, featuring an array of soups, salads, eggs dishes, a carving station and local favorites (shrimp, crawfish and ribs). Their in-house baker turns out wonderful mini bagels, French bread, buttermilk bis-cuits and cornbread. The dessert table was laden with a variety of fresh fruit, cakes, pies, bread pudding and home-churned ice cream with praline or chocolate sauce. The experience can be described in one word: delightful. (www.courtoftwosisters.com)

We dined at 923 Meson. It is a small, elegant but casual bistro locat-ed in a beautifully restored building. It features a diverse menu, excellent wine list, a half dozen specialty drinks and expert and attentive serviceJust go! (www.meson923.com)

It was time to return to our hotel, the newly renovated Omni Royal Cres-cent Hotel, in the central business dis-trict just two blocks from the French Quarter, to pack up and head home. Here’s a travel tip: sign up for Omni’s Select Guest program and immediately receive benefits including wi-fi, airline miles, bottled water, express check-in and check-out, newspaper, and turn-down service to name a few. Sightseeing between courses My love affair with New Orleans be-gan when I was a student at Tulane University. Peel and eat shrimp, oys-ters on the half-shell, gumbo, beignets and muffaletta became standard fare. Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Louis Prima and Fats Domino appeared nightly in French Quarter clubs. Food and music are the foundation of the Big Easy. It was heady stuff for an 18 year-old col-lege freshman. In my opinion, there is no city in the world of its size that has better food or music. On this return trip (one of many), my goal was to in-tertwine dining experiences with sight-seeing over a three day period.

After my wife and I arrived, we made a pilgrimage. “Breakfast at Bren-nan’s” features an ala carte or a three-course prix-fixe menu. The latter is my recommendation. We started with two of their specialty drinks, a Creole Bloody Mary and a New Orleans Gin Fizz. Baked apple with double cream was followed by hot French bread and their signature dish, Eggs Hussarde (poached eggs atop Holland rusks, Ca-

nadian bacon, topped with Hollanda-ise sauce). Save room! Banana’s Fos-ter, a Brennan’s creation, is served for dessert. Once you’ve eaten here you understand why the place has been a favorite since 1946 (www.brennansne-worleans.com).

A French Quarter self-guided walk-ing tour, using a brochure provided free by the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, was our next agenda item. Wandering the French Quarter reminds you of the history of this special city; homes and commercial buildings from the 1800’s, the St. Louis Cathedral and, of course, Jackson Square (neworleanscvb.com).

Night brought us to Jon Besh’s Do-menica Restaurant in the iconic Roos-evelt Hotel. We started with torta fritta (fried pizza dough), followed by the chef’s selection of house-cured salami, imported cheeses, marinated olives and roasted vegetables. We shared a brick-oven baked pizza and lasagna Bolognese. Dessert was gelato topped with a shot of espresso. The relaxed atmosphere plus great food is a win-ning combination. Note: In January 2010, New Orleans CityBusiness maga-zine honored Chef Alon Shaya and Do-menica as Culinary Connoisseurs’ Best Executive Chef and Best Casual Up-scale Establishment of the Year. (www.domenicarestaurant.com).

Since the goal was sightseeing be-tween courses, we headed to Preserva-tion Hall after dinner. This is home to the New Orleans Jazz Band, where the city’s top musicians jam seven nights a week. There are a few rows of bench-es and some pillows by the stage but, otherwise, it is standing room only in a funky, no-frills building originally built in 1817. It’s traditional jazz at its best . (www.preservationhall.com)

The following day, we went to the National World War II Museum. It fea-tures 3,500 oral and video histories

Scandal

In the tapes, Jackie allegedly blames Lyndon Johnson for the death of JFK, who took over the post from her husband after his assassination By Rachel Quigley and Liz Thomas

Jackie Onassis believed that Lyndon

B Johnson and a cabal of Texas tycoons were involved in the assassination of her husband John F Kennedy, ‘explo-sive’ recordings are set to reveal

The secret tapes will show that the former first lady felt that her husband’s successor was at the heart of the plot to murder him.

She became convinced that the then vice president, along with businessmen in the South, had orchestrated the Dal-las shooting, with gunman Lee Harvey

Explosive Jackie O Tapes ‘Reveal how she believed Johnson killed JFK & had affair with movie star’

Oswald – long claimed to have been a lone assassin – merely part of a much larger conspiracy.

Texas-born Mr Johnson, who served as the state’s governor and senator, completed Mr Kennedy’s term and went on to be elected president in his own right.

The tapes were recorded with lead-ing historian Arthur Schlesinger Jnr within months of the assassination on November 22, 1963, and had been sealed in a vault at the Kennedy Li-brary in Boston.

The then Mrs Kennedy, who went on to marry Greek shipping tycoon Ar-istotle Onassis, had ordered that they should not be released until 50 years after her death, with some reports sug-gesting she feared that her revelations might make her family targets for re-venge.

She died 17 years ago from cancer aged 64 and now her daughter, Caro-line Kennedy, has agreed to release the recordings early.

A programme featuring the tapes will be aired by U.S. network ABC, and it is understood British broadcasters are in talks to show it here too.

ABC executives claimed the tapes’ revelations were ‘explosive’.

They are believed to include the sug-gestion that Mr Kennedy was having an affair with a 19-year-old White House intern, with his wife even claiming that she found knickers in their bedroom.

And they go on to reveal that she too had affairs – one with Hollywood star William Holden and another with Fiat founder Gianni Agnelli – as a result of the president’s indiscretions. It has also been claimed that, in the weeks before Mr Kennedy’s assassination, the couple had turned a corner in their relation-ship and were planning to have more children.

Historian Edward Klein, who has written several books on the Kennedy clan, said: ‘Jackie regarded the pretty young things in the White House as su-perficial flings for Jack. She did retali-ate by having her own affairs.

‘There was a period during which she was delighted to be able to annoy her husband with her own illicit ro-mances.’

It is believed that Caroline, 53,

agreed to the early release of the tapes in exchange for ABC dropping its £10million drama series about the family.

The Kennedys, starring Tom Cruise’s wife Katie Holmes as Jackie, critically charted the family’s political and per-

sonal trials and tribulations since the 1930s. The series was eventually broad-cast on an independent cable channel, and on BBC2 in the UK, against Caro-line’s wishes.

Years before Brando popularized the menace and gravitas

that characterized a new generation of male stars, there was Gable, and boy did he smolder.

For all of Gable’s bad be-havior, he never got caught. Apart from whispers and scolds in the gossip col-umns, his image remained relatively untarnished. His affairs — and the fruit of those affairs — were kept under wraps by the skillful Fixers at his studio, MGM.

Gable was paired with ev-ery female star in the MGM stable: Norma Shearer, Gre-ta Garbo, Joan Crawford. At this point, Crawford was already Hollywood royalty. Not only had she proven her-self a “hey hey girl” second only to Clara Bow, she was

married to Douglas Fairbanks Jr. — son of Douglas Fairbanks and step-son of Mary Pickford, the ruling couple of silent-era Hol-lywood. Now, I realize that when you read “Joan Crawford” images of Mommie Dearest and freaky Granny-face flash before your eyes, but make them go away and think of THIS girl instead.

Then, in 1934, he appeared in It Happened One Night. Now take a deep breath, because I am going to say something that will blow your mind: THIS FILM MIGHT BE BETTER THAN GONE WITH THE WIND.

I know! Controversial! I realize that Gone With the Wind is a historical melodrama for all time. I realize it has great clothes. I realize it has moth-erfucking color. But It Happened One Night, like all the best screwball comedies from the 1930s, re-lies on wit, banter, charm, and well-placed physical comedy. It is a piquant delight to Gone With the Wind’s heavy souffle drenched in cream. Plus: THE HITCHHIKING SCENE!

You will love this movie, even if you really only love looking at the way Clau-dette Colbert’s eyebrows refuse to move. But whether or not you agree with me (and, believe me, I am already applying my internet armor for the attack that will

come in the comments) what matters is that the film was a smash. It won the “Big Five” Academy Awards (Pictures, Direc-tor, Screenplay, Actor, Ac-tress), including Gable’s first win. And it reaf-firmed Gable as a huge star — and one of MGM’s most valued assets.

Which is also why MGM was so keen to cover up what came next. In 1934, Gable started filming Call of the Wild with child star-turned-

ingenue Loretta Young. Young had been appearing in films since she was three years old, and by age 17, she had already eloped with her 26-year-old costar. The marriage was annulled a year later, leaving Young free for future exploits.

Young was by all accounts an early version of Mandy Moore in Saved!, only minus the praise songs and feathered hair. Case in point: She carried around a “swear jar” on set and demanded that every time someone cursed on set, he/she pay a quarter “for the nuns.” (Spencer Tracy’s reply: “Here’s a twenty, sister. Go ----- yourself.”) Which isn’t to say that Young didn’t get around — she totally did — she just played the religious virgin card to her benefit. Gable, still married, still on the prowl, and so not her apparent type, must have been hard to resist.

(Oh hey Loretta, wanna go back to our trailers and make out in our matching wolf coats?)

Cut scene, fade to black, and return with Young pregnant with Gable’s child. Most stars in her con-dition were hospital-ized for “exhaustion” or nerves (read: got abortions), but the Catholic Young re-fused. Instead, she pulled what might be the greatest Hol-lywood non-publicity stunt of all time.1) She hides the preg-nancy.2) When she begins to show, she flees to Eng-land “on vacation.”3) When people start asking where the hell she is, she says that she’s dealing with a “condition from child-hood.”4) She somehow smug-gles herself back to her mom’s house in Venice, California, where she gives birth. I’m picturing nuns in gray, with lots of whis-pering and pulling of the drapes.5) She sends the baby to an orphanage, trims herself down, and goes back to work.6) 19 months later, she tells Louella Parsons that she plans to adopt “two babies” and embrace the life of a single mother.7) She picks up her daughter at the orphanage, then tells the press “Oops! Sec-ond baby got reclaimed, Imma just adopt this one baby WHO LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE MEEE!!!!” (This might be the point when Mandy Moore in Saved! drives her minivan into the tree).8) She refuses to tell her daughter the identity of her real parents, even when the daughter’s HUGE CLARK GABLE EARS betray her true identity to all of the world. (According to lore, the daughter only learned that Gable was her father when some grade school brat told her so.)

But again — and this is crucial — no matter how much people gossiped about this child’s ears as she grew older, it was a rumor, not a scandal. Young, working with the help of the MGM Fixers, wove a tale that seemed believable.

track, but is used now to describe motorcycle riders who choose classic/vintage British, German, Italian, or Japanese motorbikes from

the 50s-to late 1970s as their bike of choice, over other styles of bikes.

These cafe racers do not follow the fashion/music subculture of the Rock-

ers, old or new, but

dress in a more modern and comfort-able appearance with only a hint of likeness to the Rockers style. Com-mon Levi jeans, generic motorcycle jackets, boots and/or shoes with mod-ern helmets being the norm, instead

of the very specific brand names, styles and look established by the Rockers. These cafe racers have taken elements of the American Greaser, British Rock-er and modern motorcycle rider look to create a style all their own.

Classic cafe racer style has made a comeback recently, thanks largely to the increased interest in vintage mo-torcycles in general. The baby boomers were responsible for a surge in motor-cycle sales in the late 1960s and ‘70s, and many of this generation now find themselves with the time and discre-tionary income to recreate the bikes they had—or wished to have—in their

younger years.A new generation of

motorcycle designers and builders is using the style as a fresh alterna-tive to the custom chop-per scene. Furthermore, in many parts of the United States, there are large numbers of stock 70s and 80s era Japanese motorcycles available for relatively small amounts of money -- in many areas a running motorcycle can be

had for well under $1000. There is a strong appeal to younger and less wealthy motorcyclists to build a cafe racer from one of these bikes and end up with a stylish personalized motorcy-cle at a fraction of the cost of a newer bike.

ACafé racer, originally pronounced {kæfei} racer, is a type of mo-

torcycle as well as a type of mo-torcyclist. Both meanings have their roots in the 1960s British counterculture group the Rock-ers, or the Ton-up boys, although they were also common in Italy, Germany, and other European countries. In Italy, the term refers to the specific motorcycles that were and are used for short, sharp speed trips from one coffee bar to another.

Rockers were a young and re-bellious Rock and Roll counterculture that wanted a fast, personalized and distinctive bike to travel between trans-port cafés along the newly built arte-rial motorways in and around British towns and cities. The goal of many was to be able to reach 100 miles per hour (called simply “the ton”) along such a route where the rider would leave from a cafe, race to a predetermined point and back to the cafe before a single song could play on the jukebox, called record-racing. They are remembered as being especially fond of Rockabilly mu-sic and their image is now embedded in today’s rockabilly culture.

The term cafe racer is still used to describe motorcycles of a certain style and some motorcyclists still use this term in self-description. Worthy of mentioning here is that an entire new sub-culture has evolved since the hey-day of the Rockers. The ‘cafe racers’, a term that existed in the 1950s and 1960s to refer to bike riders of the race

CareersMake a Career Fair Work for You

Opinion often differs as to the bene-fits of attending a career fair. For every one person who can tell a story of land-ing their dream job thanks to a career fair, there seems to be dozens more sto-ries of how career fairs don’t yield the desired results.

While there’s no guarantee a career fair will end up with an employer-em-ployee match made in heaven, there are steps job seekers can take to make the most of a career fair.

* Get a head start. Thanks to the In-ternet, it’s now easier for job seekers to make themselves known at career fairs. Pre-registering for a career fair, as op-posed to simply showing up on the day of, often requires registrants to upload a resume. This gives prospective em-ployers an opportunity to pre-screen potential applicants and make a note of who they want to contact at a career fair.

* Be prepared. A career fair should not be considered a simple meet-and-greet. Job seekers should prepare for a career fair as if it were a job interview. Everyone knows the value of making a strong first impression, and job seek-ers can do just that by preparing to answer any questions prospective em-ployers might ask. While a career fair might seem less formal than a typical job interview, it should not be treated as such.

* Bring more than yourself. Today’s job market is incredibly competitive, and standing out at a crowded career fair won’t be easy. That said, job seek-ers should bring a portfolio of their best work. This doesn’t have to be ev-erything, but individuals should choose a handful of work samples that illus-trate their talents and experience.

* Dress the part. Attire is also im-portant when attending a career fair. Just because a career fair is on a Wednesday afternoon does not mean job seekers should dress like it’s a typi-cal lazy Wednesday afternoon around the house. Conservative business attire should be worn, and remember it’s al-ways preferable to overdress than un-derdress.

* Follow-up. Companies with a table or booth at a career fair are going to receive an overwhelming amount of re-sumes, particularly with such high un-employment rates. That said, it’s a good idea for job seekers to do some follow-up with recruiters. Take their business cards and follow-up with them after the event. Call them that night and leave a voicemail thanking them for their time and insight, or e-mail them a thoughtful letter expressing similar sentiments of gratitude. Also, reiterate interest in the company and any available positions discussed during the career fair. Before hanging up the phone or sending the e-mail, be sure to promise a follow-up phone call during business hours, and make sure that phone call is made.

Sports NewsThe Saints made a big splash with the sign-ing of Darren Sproles By Lenny Ignelzi

New Orleans Saints equipment man-agers hardly had time to remove the adidas sneakers from Reggie Bush’s locker Friday before his replacement had been targeted and signed.

Mere hours after the ballyhooed trade of Bush, New Orleans agreed to a four-year deal with Darren Sproles, a prized free agent scatback from the San Diego Chargers.

The Saints beat out a pair of NFL heavyweights for the diminutive dy-namo. The Philadelphia Eagles and Chargers also were interested in his services, and listening to New Orleans officials and NFL observers talk, the little man might be the Saints’ biggest acquisition of the frenzied free-agency period.

“I think it is awesome,” New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees said Friday.

How awesome?Brees said the Saints’ attack might

be more dangerous and multi-dimen-sional with Sproles than Bush, if that’s possible.

Like Bush, Sproles can do a little of everything. He can catch passes out of the backfield, and he’s an elusive run-ner -- between the tackles and around the edge. And perhaps most important, he’s a dangerous returner on kickoffs and punts.

All this production from a pint-sized package.

I don’t know what the official record is for smallest Saint, but Sproles is a

challenger to the mantle. Kicker Gar-rett Hartley could post up Sproles, a 5-foot-6, 181-pounder.

But, as Saints fans will soon discover, Sproles plays bigger than his stature.

“He’s tougher than Reggie Bush, mentally and physically,” said former NFL offensive guard Ross Tucker, who serves as an analyst for SI.com and Sirius Radio. “All of his life he’s been the littlest dude ever, and he plays that way. He plays physical.”

Sproles had a powerful ally in New Orleans. Brees courted Sproles for the past few months with almost as much ardor as he did wife Brittany at Purdue.

Brees started working his former Chargers teammate in March. He text-ed him and called whenever possible, and he whispered in his ear during workouts near their offseason homes in suburban San Diego.

Brees said he competed with Wash-ington quarterback John Beck for reps with Sproles during passing drills, knowing the Redskins would be a po-tentially dangerous and deep-pocketed competitor for his services.

When Bush was dealt Thursday, Brees intensified his recruitment.

“’We need you baby, come join us, you’ll fit in great, win a championship, let’s break some records, let’s do some-thing special, let’s go,’” Brees said. “I pulled out all the stops.”

As usual, Brees succeeded.Sproles agreed to terms on a four-

year deal that will pay him an average of $3.5 million per season, a significant discount from the money Bush received last season and demanded this year.

“Let me get this straight, not only are the Saints getting a better player (than Bush), but they’re paying the guy less money for more years? Unbeliev-able,” Tucker said. “I love this move for the Saints.”

Tucker isn’t alone. The move was universally praised league-wide.

Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi has long contended that Sp-roles is better than Bush. Ditto Greg Cosell, a longtime producer and talent evaluator for NFL Films, who tweeted Thursday morning: “Sproles (is a) bet-ter player than Bush. Equal ability as satellite player on perimeter in pass game; tougher, more physical runner. Upgrade.”

Said Brees: “You look at Reggie’s athleticism and the match-up problems that he provided for us. Sproles is that same guy. I think he maybe even adds an element that we haven’t had.”

New Orleans Coach Sean Payton said Sproles’ role will be similar to the one Bush played for the past five seasons but didn’t go into much detail. With his versatility and elusiveness, though, Sproles brings a Bush-like skill set to a backfield loaded with talent -- Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Lynell Hamilton and eventually Mark Ingram.

“He’s dynamic,” Payton said. “He’s a guy that when you put on the tape he jumps out at you.”

Sproles won’t arrive in town for a couple of days. According to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, he can’t practice until next week, so he’ll have a day or two to gather his things before joining his new team-mates.

But, as Saints fans will soon discover, Sproles plays big-ger than his stature.“He’s tougher than Reggie

2011 NFL Predictions: preseason schedules, roster news and bold predictions By Brandon Galvin

So you feel that!? Oh yes, NFL action is finally back in our lives! The lockout completely changed the 2011 football season as it created a free agent frenzy and an absolutely un-predictable landscape for the upcom-ing season.

Head coaches have little time to pre-pare for the NFL season, which means we’re going to finally see who is truly dedicated to the sport. You’re better off making your predictions based on who worked out in the offseason and who didn’t. This will allow for analysts and fans alike to make the boldest of predictions this season, which you will begin to see as the preseason unfolds.

Of course, count out the lowly Oak-land Raider,s who lost elite cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Vickadelphia owned free agency as they landed superstar after superstar. Though it may be Super Bowl or bust for the Eagles, we still have to see how they gel on the field. Chemistry and in-juries will be a major obstacle this sea-son. We’ll get our first opportunity to see the new-look Eagles when they kick off preseason action and battle the Bal-timore Ravens on Thursday August 11.

Everyone is anticipating preseason because it will be our first taste of NFL action, but the diehard fans can’t wait for the first time we see the star-stud-ded 2011 draft class in action.

You know you want to see No. 1 over-all pick Cam Newton take the field for the Carolina Panthers, which will sure to be a surreal moment. Top rookie wide outs Julio Jones and A.J. Green are preparing to make a strong cast for early-round selections in your fantasy football drafts.

We’ll be discussing rookie standouts to keep your eye on throughout the pre-season, as they have the opportunity to control your team’s Super Bowl des-tiny much like James Starks did for the Packers late last year.

Which team is best prepared for a Super Bowl run? Will the New York Jets or Pittsburgh Steelers disappoint following tumultuous offseasons? Can Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers do the seemingly unthinkable and repeat as Super Bowl Champions with an improved roster?

Forget the rest, this is going to be your dedicated page for everything NFL. From preseason scheduling to ros-ter news to the hottest up-to-the-second analysis, Bleacher Report has the goods you need to prepare for the life-chang-ing 2011 season. Get the wings, chips and drinks ready for the hard-hitting, bone-crushing and exhilarating Bleach-er Report NFL analysis—and save room for the NFL action too!

Cleopatra (1963)Lets face it; this film, starring Elizabeth Taylor, has become as much of a legend as Cleopatra her-

self! My recommendation is that you buy the 3 disc remastered collectors set--then you can see it in all of its intended glory. Spactacular acting, costumes, scenery, make-up and effects make this a must see movie for everyone. And also, it was not a ‘flop’ as some people have mentioned; its one of the highest grossing movies of all time, but its just that its huge budget eclipsed this. And who can fail not to be enthralled by the real life love story that was taking place at the time with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton? It has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, love story of the 20th cen-tury! And you can see it all take place right here in this movie. Watch this movie, as you will love it.

Cleopatra: “There are never enough hours in the days of a queen, and her nights have too many.”

The Birds (1963)What I love about this film is that it`s so understated.

There is absolutely no attempt whatsoever to explain why the birds are turning against humanity , indeed there`s a scene in the cafe where a character points out that bird spe-cies joining together to wage war against the human race would be impossible , and the concept is totally ridiculous but Hitchcock and screenwriter Evan Hunter ( Using the basic premise of Du Maurier`s short story - the screenplay is almost totally original ) manage to leave the unsettling thought that this might just happen one day.

The film is slightly dated in some ways , most notably the FX which are sometimes obvious back projection , but this was made in 1963 don`t forget . And THE BIRDS does contain some classic scenes like the discussions in the diner , the downbeat ending and the bit where the woman walks into the farmhouse and finds .... no I won`t spoil it for you . I rate this as Hitchcock`s best film .

Madonna in Venice: Like a director?By Liz Smith

“THOUGH THERE are some disagreeable things in Venice, there is nothing so disagreeable as the visitors,” wrote Henry James of the fabulous city on the sea.

I suppose Mr. James did not consider himself as a visitor?NEXT MONTH, a whole lot of visitors will descend on Venice. Movie people,

models, wannabes, has-beens, never-weres, probably a few athletes. If Venice is truly unlucky, reality TV creatures will go all gondola. And of course, the media will be there in droves. These mostly agreeable people gather for the annual Ven-ice Film Festival, which runs Sept. 8-18.

I am especially interested in this year’s event. Fascinating films will be shown, in and out of competition, including Roman Polanski’s “Carnage,” Andrea Ar-nold’s “Wuthering Heights,” “Wilde Salome” (directed by Al Pacino) and Abel Ferrara’s “4.44 The Last Day on Earth.”

But, the movie whose reception I am most anxious to hear about is “W.E.” directed by Madonna. This film weaves two corresponding tales -- one about the kingdom-shaking romance of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; the other about a young modern woman, fascinated with the tale of Wallis Simpson and King Ed-ward VIII. Nothing Madonna has ever done professionally -- no album, no concert, no acting job -- has consumed La Ciccone as has “W.E.” She’s poured everything

she’s got into the movie. To say it has been an exquisite labor of love would be vastly understating her effort, commitment and talents.

Aside from possibly a few of her four children and perhaps a gentleman to hold her hand, Madonna will surely be accompa-nied in Venice by Harvey Weinstein, whose company will release the movie later this year. After “W.E.” shows in Venice, it moves on to Toronto.

Some people might assume Madonna will be a little wistful in Venice, recalling the vo-luptuous girl writhing along the fabled ca-nals in 1984’s classic video “Like a Virgin.”

But they’d be assuming incorrectly. Madonna never looks back. She is totally in the now and in the future. She probably doesn’t even remember the 1980s any-more -- that was another life; she was another person. And so were the rest of us. Remember the shock waves caused by a pop song with the word “virgin” in the title?

PARIS HILTON and Lindsay Lohan are friends again. To be honest, this might not be a bad thing for . . . Lindsay. Really!

Miss Hilton has earned a fortune and has kept out of trouble since her famous jail-time a few years back. Indeed, she is rather respectably off the radar now. It might not do Miss Lohan any harm to hang around with Paris. On the other hand, despite her merchandising success, Paris was sincerely miffed recently when an interviewer implied that her best days as a “celebutante” were over. Maybe Paris wants a bit of her crazy back? My advice? Paris: Teach Lindsay how to shop online. And keep your crazy as a memory.

The Lakes’ new fitness center is an added benefit for residents, who currently enjoy an impressive vari-ety of amenities at its private recre-ation center, the Bay Club.

Residents of all ages can choose from such features as: separate adult and teen game rooms, complete with billiards, board game tables and comfortable seating. Splash into fun in one of two pools with waterslides, a spa and a kid-friendly splash park.

The Lakes’ community amenities further boast inviting parks, fun-filled playgrounds, and picturesque bicycle and scenic jogging trails along three lakes.

The recent grand opening of Solaire by ColRich Resi-dental unveiled one-of-a-kind urban townhomes with a cutting-edge home automation system at its core. The next evolution in three-story living, Solaire’s urban vibe is high-lighted by its open, loft-like floor plans and a built-in Con-trol4® home auto-mation system that puts virtually all electronics under one-touch control. Homeowners man-age entry, security, climate, lights, multi-media entertain-ment systems and energy reduction from any room in the house or any-where in the world.

Solaire’s Control4® home automa-tion system is controlled via an in-wall touchscreen or any TV screen inside the home, or on the go from an iPhone, iPad, laptop or tablet through My-Home, an app that turns a smart de-vice into a remote control panel.

A “goodnight” function secures the home by locking the front door or arm-

ing the optional security system, plus sets nighttime lighting and tempera-ture.

Homeowners can even monitor their energy use from a TV or touch-screen and see real-time usage, cur-rent and projected costs and kilowatt consumption. Solaire’s Control4® system also makes it easy to consoli-date and control the homeowner’s A/V components. Homeowners can watch video from multiple sources including disc players, hard drives and iPods,

or browse through them simultaneously. Music from any for-mat can be played through a TV in any room. From speak-er points to audio switches and iPod docks to media play-ers, one remote con-trol enables the hom-eowner to automate the home theater and music experience, including setting the mood by controlling the lighting.

While Solaire residents dwell in a modern habitat, they play in a com-munity with coveted

neighborhood ambiance, including a private community pool and barbecue lounge. From dog parks to trail treks to beach recreation, Solaire is located at the crossroads to North County and its ample amenities. Residents enjoy proximity to a coastal lifestyle plus area colleges and the region’s most popular shopping and dining.

Solaire is located at the intersec-tion of Rancho Sante Fe Rd. and San Elijo Rd. For information, call 760-814-5916 or visit www.ColRich.com.

Solaire by ColRich are the only new homes in California to include a hi-tech Control4® home automation system with purchase.
