Devotions and Catholicism have a long history reflecting our belief in the communion of saints – our connection through God to each other. Individual devotions can provide opportunities for effective prayer and inspiration from saints that reflect our unique talents or needs. Some devotions are based on private revelation to certain holy people, others on public revelation. While many private revelations enjoy Church approval, it is important to understand that we are not obligated to comply with private revelation or devotions stemming from such revelation. Our faith and our obligations of faith involve public revelation. Public revelation is from God – it is found in Sacred Scripture and the Incarnation of Jesus who intervened into human history through the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ Jesus fulfilled revelation and entrusted the treasury of faith to the Church. The Holy Spirit was sent to dwell within us as we continue Jesus’ mission and to help us grow in understanding of our treasure. Church Tradition, dogma and doctrine clarify Scripture and the teachings of Christ. Church definitions of faith and morals are not new or private revelation, they provide a clearer understanding of what has already been revealed. The first book of the Bible tells us of God’s covenant with humanity. God will remain forever loving and faithful to us, in spite of our sinfulness. We are taught to reflect this faith and love, but God gives us freedom to reject the faith and love that give eternal life. We believe the Holy Spirit inspired the human words and writings that became our Scripture to help us grow in love and faith. We believe the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus in the womb of Mary when God chose to be one of us to fulfill revelation and show us the human face of God. Jesus taught us to call God our Father and to follow Him to the Father’s Kingdom. He personally fulfilled the exhortations of the prophets to connect sacrificial worship to self-sacrificial love. In His resurrection, after demonstrating the nature of true love, He proved the outcome of faith. Any devotion must involve faith and seek growth in self-sacrificial love, otherwise it is in error. Imposition of private revelation or personal devotions contradicts God’s gifts of public revelation and our freedom to discern our way on the path following Christ. Private devotions can be grace-filled opportunities to help us to become better disposed to follow Jesus, but any devotion is secondary to the public Eucharistic feast, our stand-alone perfection of worship that is sustained through the Church and apostolic succession. We believe the Holy Spirit enables bread and wine to become the Body and Blood of Christ. The Eucharist makes us better; we can’t make the Eucharist better. Our Eucharist is the perfect sacrifice, the same sacrifice of the Last Supper that makes us Catholic and unites us to God and each other. It is the same food offered to the apostles and to saints past, present, and yet to be born. It is the source and summit of our faith. At every Mass we unite our time to the same self-sacrifice of Jesus given for all time. There is nothing we can do to improve it. The bread of life and the cup of salvation are consecrated as nourish-ment to improve our lives; our Eucharist is our medicine to enable Christ’s healing of our fallen nature on the path toward His and our Father’s eternal kingdom. Our perfect treasure has been publicly revealed and offered to all.

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the de-parted, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. God-parents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, oppo-site page) to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by ap-pointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… 1st weekend of the month following each Mass. For other requests, please contact the office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Of-fice to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

Handicapped and Senior Parking Area

We have been working with our Architect Miller Dunwiddie to design a parking lot plan to accommodate our Handicapped and Senior citizens who might have difficulty climbing stairs or walking an extended distance. The new parking area is planned to be in the general location of the existing handicapped parking on the north side of Church, but will be larger to facilitate several more vehicles including access for two wheel chair vans. The proposed plan is designed to have a walkway from the parking area to the Church ramp. This walkway will be on the west side of the existing privacy wall so no one will need to travel down the alley to gain access to the side door ramp.

The plan we chose and all supporting docu-mentation has been submitted to the City of Chaska and the Historical Preservation Commission (HPC) to gain approval before we can proceed. As noted in other renovation project articles, the HPC must give their approval because we have buildings of historical value to the district. The HPC has a plan review meeting scheduled for 30 August. We will know more about whether or not we can proceed with the proposed plan after that meeting. ~Leo Forner

Back Pack Give Back: GA is participating once again in the annual Back Pack Give Back through Love INC. This year we are asked to collect 425 bottles of 4 oz School Glue. Over 600 back packs are given away each year to children in our community who need support. All school supply items are accepted and may be dropped off in the kiosk in back of church.

For the 7th consecutive year, Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria is pleased to be hosting a Youth Passing league on Sunday nights under the lights of the varsity football field. Registration is due by September 1 and open to students in grades 4-7. Registration and more information can be found on the Fire football website under camps at www.firefootball.org
