Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhen We Are Overwhelmed
August 3, 2014
First Reading -Isaiah 55:1-3
There are wonderful resources availableto people of faith even if they are poor.People who know the meaning of lovehave something that no amount ofmoney can buy. There is no doubt thatdoing without love is far worse thandoing without money.
Second Reading - Romans 8:35, 37-39
It has been assumed throughout historythat to have riches is an altogether goodthing. We possess great riches that wecan share with others if we know thelove of Christ. We always havesomething to give away to others, nomatter how much or how little of thisworld’s wealth we possess.
Gospel - Matthew 14:22-36Jesus asks us to give whatever we have tohim and to his work. He welcomes ourgifts whether they are large or small. Akind word spoken in love is morevaluable than a big donation givengrudgingly. Love for Christ and love forothers makes everything go further.
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS
1 KINGS 19:9, 11-13
ROMANS 9:1-5
MATTHEW 14:22-33

The Paltry OfferingBy: Kristina M. DeNeveAdult Faith Formation CoordinatorDiocese of Honolulu
I can imagine the disciples’ feelings of inadequacyin today’s Gospel as they brought forth their paltryoffering of five fish and two loaves of bread. This wasnot enough to feed themselves, let alone the entire crowd!
Yet, Jesus asked what they had. So they gave it to him.We do the same thing at every offertory at every Mass. The collection of our money and a family bringing up thebread and wine is like the disciples showing Jesus theirfish. It is so little. We really offer Jesus so little.
Jesus accepts our gifts too. And then Jesus turns the littlewe have into nourishment for the entire community Bgiving us more than we need for the fullness of life.
Ironically, this is not the end of the story. Did you knowthat each Sunday we are asked to place our lives on thealtar? All the good and bad, the blessings and heartbreaksof our past week. I invite you to do this moreintentionally B give Jesus the (paltry) offering of yourpast week. Jesus will then turn our very life intonourishment for all.
