Stay Connected Page 43

From the President2019 was a year to connect guests with Audubon’s mission of saving species—new exhibits, new ways to meet animals up close, and new additions to our animal family.

At the Zoo we opened a new lion habitat and welcomed the birth of a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. The Survival Center enjoyed a baby boom, and the Aquarium added cownose and blue-spotted rays.

We also created enriching experiences for our greater New Orleans community, expanding access to the magic of an Audubon adventure through our Audubon Community Connect program. In 2019, nearly 40,000 guests visited Audubon facilities free of charge through initiatives like Orleans Parish Appreciation Days and the New Orleans Public Library Audubon Museum Partner Pass.

Audubon’s passion for protecting the environment spurred individual community members to make an impact and participate in initiatives like Plastic Free July. More than 500 participants from across New Orleans joined Audubon in this challenge to reduce single-use plastics and protect marine animals—keeping more than 10,000 pieces of plastic from our waterways.

Our 2019 Annual Report reflects our greatest accomplishments of the year, all made possible by you—our donors, Members, guests, and community. From everyone here at Audubon Nature Institute, thank you for being an essential part of our family.

IMPACTSAVING SPECIES

Welcome, Bulan Feliz, the matriarch of Audubon Zoo’s Sumatran orangutan group, gave birth to a female infant under a full moon on July 17, 2019. Animal care staff chose the name “Bulan” for the infant because it means “moon” in Bahasa Indonesia. This is Feliz’s second offspring— she welcomed her first offspring, Menari, also at Audubon Zoo, in 2009. In addition to Feliz and Menari, the Zoo’s Sumatran orangutan habitat is also home to juvenile female Reese and male Jambi, Bulan’s father. Audubon’s orangutans are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Program, and with every birth of a critically endangered species like this, we hope zoo visitors will connect with a species on the brink of extinction and want to start making the little changes in their lives to help save them.

Louisiana Pine SnakesAudubon staff released three Louisiana pine snakes into the Kisatchie National Forest this past fall. With only around 200 individuals left in the wild, this threatened species is the rarest snake in the United States. As Audubon is one of four main breeding facilities for this species, your support is critical to ensuring the Louisiana pine snake survives.

Cownose Rays14 cownose rays were born at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in 2019. These were welcome additions for these near-threatened rays.

TomistomasThree tomistoma eggs were laid and incubated at Audubon Zoo in 2019. With these, the Zoo has hatched a total of 15 tomistomas since 2014, making it one of the most successful zoos in the U.S. to reproduce this species!

IMPACTLIONS

The Roar ReturnsAudubon Zoo opened a brand-new spacious lion habitat in the spring that was made possible through a generous donation from philanthropists Joy and Boysie Bollinger. The design gives panoramic views of the habitat along with places for up-close glimpses of the majestic animals and educational demonstrations. The habitat is home to three lionesses and one male with room to accommodate cubs, which is fortunate, since one lioness was expecting at the end of the year!

Bringing Conservation HomeIn honor of New Orleans’ newest big cat residents, the Zoo and Louisiana SPCA teamed up to encourage community members to adopt cats of their own, offering a free Zoo ticket to everyone who adopted a feline friend in May.

Protecting the Pride Audubon honored the new arrivals and their wild cousins by contributing $10,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Lion Recovery Fund as part of Disney’s “Protect the Pride” campaign to save lions in the wild whose population has plummeted to half in just 25 years.

Welcome to the FamilyAudubon celebrated new births throughout the year, including Bulan, the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan you read about in a previous section, three tomistomas, a porcupette (a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine), three Home’s hinge-backed tortoises (the first successful hatching of this species at Audubon Zoo), Ruby the barasingha deer fawn, and nine annulated tree boas at the Zoo as well as cownose and yellow stingrays, yellow seahorses, and euphyra (swimming moon jellyfish) at the Aquarium.

The Species Survival Center enjoyed a baby boom consisting of giraffe, sable antelope, bongo, eland, sitatunga, whooping cranes, and Mississippi sandhill cranes. You’ll read more on the next page about the breeding and release programs for the whooping and Mississippi sandhill cranes.

In addition to the lion pride, the Zoo also welcomed some new members of the Audubon family from

other conservation organizations, including Liem the Malayan tiger, a two-toed sloth, a female babirusa named BB, a pair of red river hogs, a Baird’s tapir named Ixchel, a Wolf’s guenon named Fontina, a golden lion tamarin named Brazil, an armadillo named Louise, and three lace monitors. At the Aquarium, hooded Merganser ducks and blue-spotted stingrays joined the family.

At the end of the year, the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium added a colony of honeypot ants in the Main Hall, across from the popular leafcutter ant exhibit. The colony was generously donated by Isaac’s Ant Foundation—a heartfelt thanks to the Foundation for giving New Orleans this piece of Isaac’s legacy. Honeypot ants are usually found in arid or semi-arid habitats, and the species (Myrmecocystus mexicanus) on display at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium comes from particularly hot, dry parts of the southwestern United States.

Liem, Audubon Zoo’s new Malayan tiger arrived from Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo. Bumi, the Zoo’s previous Malayan tiger, moved to Woodland Park Zoo as part of a breeding recommendation by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. At Woodland Park Zoo, Bumi will be partnered with a genetically compatible female in hopes that he will contribute to the Malayan tiger population.

A new honeypot ant exhibit debuted at Audubon Butterflly Garden and Insectarium. Honeypot ants do not make honey, rather, they make honey-like liquids that are stored in the ants themselves!

Answering the CallIn November, Audubon worked with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to transfer 11 whooping crane chicks—four of which were hatched and reared at Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center—into the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in Southwest Louisiana, bringing the number of whooping cranes living in the wild in Louisiana to 80. Audubon and LDWF, supported by generous donors like Chevron and the Coypu Foundation, have been longtime leaders in whooping crane conservation and are continuing to expand their partnership with the goal of developing a self-sustaining Louisiana whooping crane population. This partnership is an example of the importance of collaboration between state agencies and non-profit organizations, leveraging the strengths of both to achieve measurable conservation results and make a significant, historic impact on the future of this species.

CWN to the Rescue Coastal Wildlife Network became Louisiana’s only marine animal stranding network in October of 2019. CWN is also the sole program responsible for the rehabilitation of sea turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins, whales, and manatees, in Louisiana. CWN staff cared for a stranded green sea turtle affectionately dubbed “Hulk” for four months beginning in April 2019 and collaborated with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to release him back into the wild in July.

Whooping cranes are an endangered species that neared extinction in the 1940s. Audubon has been a leader in conservation of these birds and continues to work on their behalf through the Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife, Audubon’s conservation breeding partnership with San Diego Zoo Global.

Dining for ChangeIn 2019, Audubon’s Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries program brought back its popular Summer of Sustainability dinner series, raising funds for their work supporting the sustainability of local fisheries. The dinners featured cuisine and wine pairings from local culinary luminaries served in breathtaking Audubon settings. Both 2019 sell-out dinners transported guests to the underwater world of the Aquarium’s newly refurbished Gulf of Mexico Gallery, complete with sharks and a giant green sea turtle for dining companions.

Reduce and Reuse In 2019, Audubon’s continued leadership in local efforts to fight plastic pollution garnered awards, including the 2019 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Everyday Hero Award for Corporate Leadership and the 2019 Love Your City Resource Management Award. Audubon challenged employees and community members to participate in EcoChallenge.org’s Plastic Free July initiative, with Audubon’s “Plastic Free New Orleans” team coming in third place among teams across the country.

As part of the push to educate the community on the harms of single-use plastics and the importance of finding alternatives, Audubon youth volunteers hosted a popular free screening of the documentary “Straws” at Entergy Giant Screen Theater.

Think Globally,Act Locally Throughout the year, Audubon worked with our community to extend the impact of our conservation efforts beyond our facilities, our city, and even our continent. Audubon joined with our AZA-accredited colleagues and more than 100 other global organizations to support the National Geographic Society’s “Global Deal for Nature” initiative, which calls on world leaders to protect and restore half of the Earth’s lands and oceans.

Audubon also wove support for global conservation efforts into our events and guest promotions. For example, guests at the Zoo’s annual Mother’s Day Celebration presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans and Touro Infirmary received a candy rose when they donated $2 at the “I Heart M.O.M.” booth sponsored by American Heart Association.

All proceeds donated at the booth went to “M.O.M.– Missing Orangutan Mothers,” a heartfelt campaign to raise funds and promote public awareness of conservation issues for these critically endangered great apes.

In the spring, Audubon helped primates on the other side of the world when it partnered with Eco-Cell to encourage community members to donate their broken or unwanted cell phones to the “Gorillas on the Line” campaign. Most small electronics, like cell phones, are made with a mineral called coltan, which is mined from areas where endangered gorillas live. Recycling donated cell phones to “Gorillas on the Line” helps reduce the demand for Coltan. Zoo admission was not required to drop off a phone, but Audubon offered three days when guests could receive $5 off up to two general admission tickets when they donated a phone.

IMPACTAZA CONFERENCE

Audubon Hosts International ConferenceIn the fall, Audubon was honored to host The Association of Zoos and Aquariums and The International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association 2019 Annual Conference. From September 7 to 12, the conference featured education, networking, and workshops with more than 3,000 zoo and aquarium professionals from across the country.

AquariumIcebreakerThe festivities kicked off with Audubon leading a parade of attendees to Woldenberg Riverfront Plaza and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, where guests enjoyed mouth-watering local cuisine and foot-stomping live music while learning about Audubon’s marine conservation efforts and networking with colleagues to create the next generation of conservation partnerships.

Zoo Day The event closed with a day at Audubon Zoo, including more local cuisine, culture, and special behind-the-scenes tours of Zoo habitats and facilities. Through a tremendous effort by Audubon staff and a partnership with Schmelly’s Dirt Farm, the event walked the conservation walk, using recyclable and compostable serving ware for dining and disposing of waste in recycling and composting bins.

A Wild Encounter The Aquarium offered guests the opportunity to see—and even participate in—this kind of training up-close through it’s Sea Otter Behind-the-Scenes Wild Encounter experience. Guests were able to spend 30 minutes with sea otter care staff, seeing how we care for the southern sea otters who call Audubon home, learning about the conservation threats they face in the wild, and even offering some of their favorite seafood (through a protective plexiglass screen) as a reward for participating in behavioral training. The revenue from premium experiences like this supports Audubon’s conservation efforts while making guests’ Aquarium experiences even more engaging and interactive.

IMPACTANIMAL CARE

Participation PointsA key component of caring for Audubon’s animals is their voluntary participation in their own healthcare and daily husbandry routines. Animal care staff use only positive-reinforcement training—never punishment—and always follow the animal’s cues on whether or not they’re interested in participating in training. These protocols and the close bond it creates between animals and staff allow us to provide calm and minimally invasive veterinary care, such as taking x-rays and administering medication without causing the animal stress.

Getting Ready for BabyPerhaps the most crucial—and delicate—example of this kind of training is the maternal care training all female great apes receive at Audubon Zoo to prepare them for the possibility of motherhood. For example, thanks to this training and her trust in her care team, Feliz the orangutan voluntarily participated in prenatal procedures like ultrasounds and wellness checks while pregnant with Bulan and was comfortable allowing veterinary staff to examine the infant after she was born.

Audubon Takes Flight2019 saw the introduction of a fun new guest engagement program at the Zoo. “Audubon Takes Flight” gave guests a glimpse of our Animal Ambassador birds using their most unique adaptation—the ability to fly. Plus, they got to enjoy a comedic program and leave with an understanding of just how important birds are for the planet.

Themed EnrichmentHumans aren’t the only ones who enjoy celebrating holidays with Audubon! From Halloween to Valentine’s Day to Pride Month, animal care staff spent 2019 thinking up creative new ways to provide Audubon’s animals with enrichment items and activities that encourage their natural behaviors and stimulate their minds (while entertaining guests).

Mr. Miyagi the Eurasian eagle owl is an Audubon Zoo animal ambassador and part of the Zoo’s free flight sessions. Animal care staff have used a lot of positive reinforcement training (including in the Superdome!) and relationship building, so he is happy to fly where we ask him to and shows visitors how beautiful birds are in the air.

New at the Nature Center Audubon Louisiana Nature Center kept things fresh in 2019 with temporary exhibits, a new community event, and a new Planetarium presentation. “Attack of the Bloodsuckers!” explored the science of what’s biting you in this skin-crawling installation in the Interpretive Center, which is free and open to the public. LDWF’s “Paradise” display showcased the public areas and facilities managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as well as local threatened and endangered animals. Second Saturday Community Markets welcomed community members to purchase food and handcrafts from local vendors and enjoy special nature hikes, live music, Planetarium shows, and more. In the Planetarium, the “Flight of the Butterflies” presentation wowed guests with stunning imagery and fascinating facts about monarch butterflies’ incredible North American migration.

IMPACTNEW EXPERIENCES

Sharks: Escape ExtinctionThe Aquarium debuted an exciting new addition in June—an all-ages, family-friendly new interactive experience presented by Escape My Room called “Escape Extinction: Sharks.” The mission is to save sharks from going extinct and is designed to be challenging and fun for all ages in groups of up to 10.

Top 10 AgainAudubon Aquarium of the Americas and Audubon Zoo were once again among the top winners of the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. In this online poll, the Aquarium ranked 3rd and the Zoo secured 9th place among 20 nominees, all accredited by the AZA, that were “hand-picked by a panel of zoo and family travel experts.”

Gulf of Mexico While plans for a more extensive update are being developed, the Aquarium’s Gulf of Mexico Gallery got a refresh in 2019, seeing the removal of the carpeted bleachers to create more exhibitry space and installation of floor-to-ceiling mirrors along the wall opposite the Gallery’s centerpiece: a 400,000-gallon tank filled with fish, sharks, and a giant green sea turtle.

Taylor Students and Scholars Luncheon Thanks to the Taylor/Audubon Students and Scholars Program, in 2019 more than 219,000 high-achieving students in grades 7 through 12 statewide received free Audubon Memberships as part of the ongoing initiative established by the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation to reward Louisiana students’ hard work. On September 17, Phyllis Taylor, chairman and president of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, and Ron Forman, President and CEO of Audubon Nature Institute, hosted a group of exceptional Taylor Students and Scholars for lunch in the Jerome S. Glazer Audubon Tea Room. The group enjoyed a special Animal Ambassador presentation during lunch followed by an excursion to see the Zoo’s stunning new lion habitat.

IMPACTCOMMUNITY

Neighbors Big and SmallDid you know that you can see the Zoo’s giraffe habitat from the 6th floor of Children’s Hospital New Orleans? Yet, because of health concerns, many of the Hospital’s patients and their families don’t have the opportunity to see their long-necked neighbors up close during regular Zoo hours. That’s why Audubon and Children’s Hospital work together to make sure these very special neighbors have opportunities to say “howdy” to each other safely, like in January when a group of patients and their families came to the Zoo before open hours to get an up-close experience with our giraffes, complete with giraffe feeding. We are proud to be longtime partners with Children’s Hospital New Orleans, working together to improve the lives of the children of our community!

Admission DiscountsFrom military discounts to Parish Appreciation Days and free admission for moms on Mother’s Day, there were many ways for all members of the community to enjoy an Audubon visit in 2019. For example, members of other local museums were able to visit Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium for free during New Orleans Museum Month and military service members, first responders, teachers, and college students all had opportunities for admission discounts to the popular Audubon Zoo Lights presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans holiday extravaganza.

Connecting CommunityAudubon Nature Institute expanded its commitment to educating our community about the wonders of nature in 2019 through a new initiative called Audubon Community Connect. This initiative increased accessibility to the Zoo, Aquarium, Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, and Nature Center for Orleans Parish residents through three components:

• Orleans Parish Appreciation Days, which offer free admission to an Audubon attraction for Orleans Parish residents on Wednesdays (attractions available on a rotating schedule).

• The Audubon SNAP Program, which provides free admission to Audubon attractions every day for SNAP benefit recipients and their families.

• The Audubon Museum Culture Pass, which allows Orleans Parish Public Library cardholders to check out passes that can be used at any Audubon attraction any day the attractions are open to the public.

The new program furthered Audubon’s goal of making the magic of an Audubon adventure accessible to every member of our community.

Not Just for KidsIn 2019, Audubon launched two new programs to give grown-ups access to Audubon attractions after hours: Audubon Supper Club and Sip+Dip. Supper Club paired gourmet dining experiences with exclusive animal chats and lively entertainment at a rotating selection of Audubon venues.

With the support of sponsor Main Squeeze Juice Co., Sip+Dip welcomed the 21+ crowd to the Cool Zoo splash park after hours for snacks, sips, a DJ, and fun kid-free games and activities.

Heart of PassionWe partnered with Heart of Passion, Inc. to give teens with cancer a special VIP tour and breakfast with the sharks at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas for their 2019 Red Carpet Retreat, their initiative to provide positive unique experiences for teens with cancer to anticipate, enjoy, and make memories to share—positive memories to help balance out the negative uniqueness that cancer brings to their everyday lives.

NOLA BugFestIn November, Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium joined the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board in hosting the 2nd Annual NOLA BugFest. This free event featured more than 25 organizations and 40 educational booths and activities, giving attendees the opportunity to interact with entomologists and other scientists to learn about the fascinating world of insects, spiders, and wildlife found in the New Orleans area and celebrate the beauty and diversity of insects from around the globe.

Supplier DiversityAudubon continued its commitment to supplier diversity in 2019, making 15.7% (and exceeding the annual goal of 12%) of its purchases with MBEs/MWBEs and working with 16 new diverse suppliers.

Back to School Fest with OPSB On September 14, Audubon Zoo hosted the 2nd Annual Back to School Fest with Orleans Parish School Board. The first 10,000 Orleans Parish students and their families to enter the Zoo received complimentary admission and guests enjoyed other fun actives including live entertainment, giveaways, contests and much more.

People and PlacesEach year, Audubon invites our community to come to Audubon Zoo to celebrate New Orleans’ roots and the rich cultural diversity that makes our city so vibrant. In 2019, the Zoo hosted 15th anniversary editions of two such events: Soul Fest, presented by AARP, sponsored in part by Atmos Energy, and supported by The Bardell Company and Marathon Petroleum LP, in March and Celebración Latina presented by Pan-American Life Insurance Group and sponsored in part by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies in October. The latter provided a great opportunity to highlight the Zoo’s Central- and South-American Jaguar Jungle habitat, which was made possible by the Zemurray Foundation.

Nature, Centered Audubon Louisiana Nature Center continued to serve as a hub for community and family fun in the great outdoors in 2019. The Nature Center hosted Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Spring Into Action to kick off a series of events supporting AZA’s efforts to encourage kids and families to get involved with nature conservation. It also held educational events like Mosquito Fest and Bat Appreciation Day as well as naturalist hikes and chats throughout the year.

IMPACTPARKS

Parks and RecreationIn May, Orleans Parish voted in overwhelming favor for a new parks and recreation millage to benefit Audubon’s public parks as well as City Park New Orleans, New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, and New Orleans Parks and Parkways, ushering in a new era of cooperation and collaboration among the four agencies that manage New Orleans’ public greenspaces and recreational facilities.

New Orleans’ Front PorchIn October, Audubon celebrated the 30th anniversary of Woldenberg Riverfront Park, which was made possible by the support from the Woldenberg Foundation and the Goldring Family Foundation. The 17-acre Park contains numerous works of art and is home to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas as well as iconic New Orleans festivals.

Swimming PartnersIn the summer, the Park Partners collected 2,750 new swimsuits for kids in need in support of Mayor Cantrell and NORDC’s effort to ensure all residents have access to the City’s 17 free public pools. Community members who donated a swimsuit at any Audubon facility received one complimentary admission ticket to the Audubon attraction of their choice.
