Topic: “Microscope on a Chip: A Highly Compact Lensless High-Resolution Optofluidic Microscope (OFM)”Speaker: Xiquan Cui, PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering, CaltechTime: Optional dinner sat 6:30; Presentation at 7:30 PMCost: $25 if reserved by Jan. 12; $30 after (no cost for presentation at 7:30 pm)Place: Biltmore Hotel, 2151 Laurelwood Rd (Fwy 101 at Montague Expressway), Santa ClaraRSVP: by email to Janis Karklins, [email protected]: www.cpmt.org/scv  /  www.cpmt.org/scv/meetings/cpmt0901.html

Topic Descripton Low-cost and high-resolution on-chip microscopes are vital for reducing cost and improving efficiency for modern biomedicine and bioscience. Despite the needs, the conventional microscope design has proven difficult to miniaturize. I will present our work on the first implementation and application of two high-resolution, lensless and fully on-chip microscopes based on the optofluidic microscopy (OFM) method. These systems abandon the conventional microscope design, which requires expensive lenses and large space to magnify images, and instead utilizes microfluidic flow to deliver specimens across array(s) of micron-size apertures defined on a metal-coated CMOS sensor to generate direct projection images. The first system utilizes a gravity-driven microfluidic flow for sample scanning and is suited for imaging elongate objects, such as Caenorhabditis elegans; and the second system employs an electrokinetic drive for flow control and is suited for imaging cells and other spherical/ellipsoidal objects. The optofluidic microscope design, readily fabricable with existing semiconductor and microfluidic technologies, offers low cost and highly compact imaging solutions. More functionalities, such as on-chip phase and fluorescence imaging, can also be readily adapted into OFM systems. We anticipate that OFM can significantly address a range of biomedical and bioscience needs as well as engender new microscope applications.

Speaker BioXiquan Cui is currently a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at Caltech. He obtained his B.E. and M.S. in Optical & Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China in 2003, and obtained his M.S. of Physics from Portland State University in 2005. He was interested in many research areas, and worked on a variety of projects in electronics, optics, MEMS and nanotechnology. At present, he is working on developing innovative bio-imaging techniques at the Biophotonics group at Caltech.

Date and Time: Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Location: SRI Menlo Park, Middlefield Road at Ringwood - Dining Room in the International Building

Entrances to Conference Center parking are next to the church on Ravenswood and at Ringwood and Middlefield.

Topic Description                          Join Dr. Lennart Mucke for a discussion of the historical approaches to developing therapies for Alzheimer’s, what leading edge research is uncovering, as well as reasons for optimism in our ability to treat Alzheimer’s and other devastating neurological diseases.Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal neurological disease with an immense and growing impact on society.  Alzheimer’s affects 4.6 million new patients annually and is the seventh leading cause of death in the US.  More than two-thirds of patients are cared for by family and friends, and this exacts an enormous toll in terms of emotional stress, work disruptions and time.  Due to our aging demographics, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s in the US is expected to triple by 2050 to 13.2 million.Alois Alzheimer identified the disease in 1906.  Over 100 years later, there are multiple treatments available, but their benefits are only modest.  Breakthroughs in new treatments and protective therapies are needed, but these require a better understanding of the disease process.  At the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease (GIND), Dr. Mucke developed transgenic models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease which lead to the identification of molecular processes that cause or modulate the course of these diseases.  GIND continues to lead investigative efforts into pathogenic factors and pathways at the molecular, cellular, network and behavioral level.
