1.000 m2 de desig / 1,000 m2 of DesireArchitecture and sexuality
Adlade de Caters, Rosa Ferr, Beatriz Colomina, Marie-Franoise Quignard, Pol Esteve, Ester Fernndez Cifuentes, Ingo Niermann, Fulvio Ferrari, Rem Koolhaas
In which spaces does sexuality move in western culture? How do these spaces act when shaping and epitomising roles and practices? From the sexual utopias of Ledoux, Fourier and Sade to the aspirations of hippy communes or the radical architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, what programmes have sought to have an influence in cities by controlling space when defining or liberating sexual behaviour? From the eighteenth century and the French aristocracyspetites maisons, with their specialised rooms, decoration and furniture, to bachelor pads presented in Playboy, what is the role played by architecture in the strategies of seduction?

2016Despues del fin del mundo / After the end of the world
Jos Luis de Vicente, McKenzie Wark, Timothy Morton, Kim Stanley Robinson, Patricia Vieira
The Paris Agreement has become the international communitys definitive attempt and perhaps its final opportunity to halt the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. At some point in the second half of the 21st century, there will have to be zero CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and the transition to an energy model based on decarbonisation will have to be complete. Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement is a collective challenge for which there are few historical precedents. If we manage it, the world between 2050 and 2100 will be dramatically different to the world we were born into and grew up in. To get there, we will have to accept that the problem is not just one of engineering.

Photobook Phenomenon
Moritz Neumller, Lesley A. Martin, Markus Schaden, Frederic Lezmi, Martin Parr, Horacio Fernndez, Ryuichi Kaneko, Gerry Badger, Erik Kessels, Irene de Mendoza
Photobooks have become increasingly popular in recent years and occupy a central place in contemporary photogra-phy. Nowadays, more photobooks are produced, bought and sold, swapped and collected than ever before. Independ-ent publishing and the self-publishing of books and fanzines have become a phenomenon that has had a considerable impact on both the publishing industry and the art world, and there is an evident return to the printed object, even though we are at the height of the digital era. Many artists have found this format to be not only a good tool for showing their work, but also the perfect place for experimen-tation and creativity. In addition, there is a growing interest in reinterpreting the history of photography through the role of the photobook and printed photographs.

La mquina de pensar / The thinking machineRamon Llull and the ars combinatoria
Amador Vega Esquerra,Siegfried Zielinski,Miquel Bassols,Fernando Domnguez Reboiras, Charles Lohr,Barbara Maria Stafford
In the intellectual context of the late 13th century, created by Arab, Jewish and Christian philosophers and scientists, the figure of Ramon Llull occupied a prime position. Llull was a prolific writer and untiring traveller who invented a new form of universal knowledge, the ars combinatoria, which can be seen as a precedent of new information technologies Combining historical documentation and the more recent approaches of artists who have been inspired by his work, the catalogue explores some surprising and little known aspects of his thinking, and analyses Llulls body of work and, most of all, his legacy from a contemporary viewpoint.

+ Humanos / Human +The future of our species
Cathrine Kramer, Ricard Sol, Michael John Gorman, Mavi Snchez-Vives, Rachel Armstrong
What will the human race be like in the future? As a species, how will the evolutionary process affect us? Our species is becoming progressively different on the basis of an evolution that involves science and technology. In every sense. In the measure that human action, science and technology can modify the human body itself: its capabilities, its perceptions and its durability. But also in the measure that such human action has an impact on the environment and so orients, constructively or destructively, the evolutionary processes of any species affected by it, which means absolutely all of them. And above all of them, our own. Cyborgs, prosthetics, hybrids, robots, augmented capacities, artificial intelligence, the redesigning of our surroundings, lengthening lifespan, etc.

Arissa The Shadow and the Photographer 1922-1936
Rafael Levenfeld, Valentn Vallhonrat
In the work of photographer Antoni Arissa Asmarats (Barcelona, 1900-1980), one of the most important figures of the photographic avant-garde, we encounter a clear and explicit artistic ambition. For Arissa, photography is not just a way of reflecting and documenting reality, but offers the possibility of venturing deeper into its creative dimension. His artistic ambitions and his constant searching and experimentation situate his work in the pictorialism of the first era, to evolve later towards the New Vision, indisputably his most modern and important phase.

Imma Tubella, Teresa Ma, Dr. Ferran Sabat i Casellas, Mila Segarra, Teresa Navas Ferrer, Pere Izquierdo i Tugas
The Mancomunitat of Catalonia, or Commonwealth of Catalan-Speaking Regions, was founded on 6th April 1914 with Enric Prat de la Riba as its president. It was a political project that brought together the four Catalan provincial councils. Although it didnt have any other resources than those provided by the provincial councils, the Mancomunitat achieved a great deal and was able to transform the country. For a decade it worked energetically to create solid tools of connectivity and growth in Catalonia. .

Metamorfosis / MetamorphosisFantasy Visions in Starewitch, vankmajer and the Quay Brothers
Carolina Lpez, Brian Dillon, Pascal Vimenet, Franois Martin, Jordi Costa, Andrs Hispano
Presentation and journey through the work and references of filmmakers Ladislas Starewitch, Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay, to trace the lines of intersection and convergence between their imaginaries. Although these are three very personal universes of great richness and multiple nuances, they often share an atmosphere or reference points or sinister, surreal, humorous poetics in which the fairy tale coexists with the cabinet of curiosities, Renaissance science, magical illusions and a certain intellectual, aesthetic and literary legacy originating from the Eastern Europe of the early 20th century.

El Parallel, 1894-1939 Barcelona y el espectculo de la modernidad
Xavier Albert, Eduard Molner, Antoni Ramon, Paco Villar
At the end of the 19th century, and favoured by the new urban planning regulations of the time, Barcelonas Parallel became the citys leisure avenue par excellence. This new reality, perfectly comparable to those existing in other large urban centres in Europe at that time quickly became, however, a genuine cultural expression of the social and political conflict that characterised the Barcelona of the early 20th century.

A review of the character and the work of the writer Roberto Bolao, taking as a starting point three of the places where he lived for a large part of his life: Barcelona, Girona and Blanes.Bolaos work, from the exercises of his youth written to free my hand to the cathedral-like ambition of 2666, all seems to form part of a universe in expansion, with its own laws, games, mirages and connectivities. The catalogue helps, in this sense, to unravel the Bolao enigma.

Celeste Arajo, Jordi Ball, Andrs Hispano, Gilles Lipovetsky, Jean Serroy
In less than half a century we have passed from the spectacle-screen to the communication-screen, from the one-screen to the all-screen. The screen in all places and at all times; the screen in all shapes and sizes; the screen on one, the screen with one; the handy, all-seeing screen: the century that is beginning is the century of the omnipresent and multiform, planetary and multimedia screen. This reality has generated a new language, which most individuals now master, a new perception of things, a new consumption: in short, a new culture. Atopia Art and City in the 21st Century
Ivn de la Nuez, Josep Ramoneda
A look at the contemporary art of the decade 2000 to 2010 which was characterised by the escalation in global terror (since the 9/11 attacks on the United States in 2001) and the politics of fear that followed. The artists show us their experiences of the city of fear, of the tensions between individuals and the masses, of the urban landscape, and clearly show an unease and a shared universal pathos which, in spite of everything, allows us to recover the idea of a common aesthetic experience.

J. G. Ballard An Autopsy of the New Millennium
Jordi Costa, Rodrigo Fresn, Vicente Luis Mora, Simon Sellars, V. Vale
Ballards is a unique, open-ended body of work that is intuitive, urban and totally contemporary. It has a popular and visionary dimension that makes it particularly current at a historic moment in time marked by globalisation at every level, the unstoppable process of the technification of everyday living and the crisis in the economic and environmental model. His work isnt that of a pessimist but rather that of an aware and lucid hyper-realist.

A look at the complex and event-filled process that was the Spanish transition, from the end of the dictatorship of General Franco to the start of the restoration of democracy. From a non-historical viewpoint, it analyses the transition as a process that affected and was moved forward by the people who lived through it, not just by the political elite. The experiences of a generation, both personal and collective, are illustrated by the sections of the book: strike, the police station, forms of coexistence, the psychiatric hospital, the music scene, communication, sport, school and memory.

Occident vist des dOrient / Occidente visto desde OrienteAbdelwahab Meddeb, Amina Okada, Annie Vernay-Nouri, Stphane Yerasimos
Historically, Easterners have paid much less attention to Europeans than we have to them; while Orientalism is a cultural tradition in the West, the West rarely features in the creativity of Eastern cultures, to such an extent that Islam has been divided in the way it views the West. In the East, the different attitudes about and gazes onto the West have coexisted throughout history: conflict, solidarity, exchange, fascination do not alternate in time but coincide.

Can war be explained as an anthropological phenomenon? Is there a mathematic model that explains or helps to forecast wars? Why do we commemorate them? Are we doomed to forget them? Factoria dhumor Bruguera / Factora de humor BrugueraCarles Santamaria, Jaume Vidal
Characters such as Carpanta, The Gilda sisters, Tribulete the reporter, Zipi & Zape, Carioco and Mortadelo & Filemn defined a kind of humour that emerged from the comic strips to be shared by generations of readers. Bruguera was one of the countrys first cultural industries. It was a pioneer in the field of culture for the masses, who were the target of its products in the form of comic books and popular novel. It consequently played a prime role in the construction of the Spanish imaginary of the post-war years, specifically in the field of humour, by means of which it reached a whole range of social sectors, without distinction of class or age.

When we speak of savages, the first idea to spring to mind is that of primitive peoples far from our European shores and supposedly beyond the bounds of civilisation. The origin of the concept comes to us from Greek culture, for which savage was a synonym for an imaginary creature who was half human, half animal, and related to the gods. The concept of the wild man and the associated iconography has changed throughout history, but not the idea that savages are beings on the fringes of civilisation.

La ciutat que mai no exist / The City that Never WasFantastic Architectures in Western Art
Pedro Azara, Karsten Harries and Jean-Jacques Wunenburger
The discovery in the late fifteenth century of Roman frescoes representing imaginary architectures saw the start of a new conception of art and a new genre: the architectural capriccio. The influence of this new genre spans the work of painters of the main European schools (Monsu Desiderio, Vredeman de Vries, Marieschi, Bellotto, Hubert Robert) to those by other artists of the historical avant-garde movements who were also influenced by this pictorial tradition: De Chirico, Lger, Klee, Delvaux. The effect of this genre on contemporary artists is represented by the work of Ann Veronica Janssens, Catherine Yass and Miquel Navarro, among others.

Desprs de la notcia / After the News Post-media Documentary Practices
Carles Guerra
The new documentary practices are no longer the exclusive territory of the professional informant. They are represented by artists, film-makers, novelists, visual anthropologists, amateur ethnographers and anonymous citizens who place their images in circulation. Unlike what happens in the dominant media, these documentaries superpose the moments of the information and of debate. They are ways of intervening in reality, a new activism of representation. Images, among others, of Allan Sekula, Stanley Greene, Bruno Serralongue, Chantal Akerman, Hannah Collins, Johan van der Keuken, Alan Berliner, Pter Forgacs, etc.

Fantasies de lharem i noves Xahrazads / Harem Fantasies and New ScheherazadesPatricia Almarcegui, Erika Bornay, Rosse Issa, Sophie Makariou, Fatema Mernissi, Amina Okada
Or how, by means of fascinating reading such as The Thousand and One Nights, the Western world has produced an unreal image of the East, a mirage of desire and ignorance that found its clear expression in the treatment of the theme of the harem. However, by comparing works by painters such as Ingres, Fortuny, Delacroix, Matisse, Picasso, and through an extraordinary selection of Eastern miniatures, the catalogue also shows how the East has constructed dreams and fantasies about women which have eclipsed a complex and not always pleasant reality. This twofold East-West fantasy has, like a thick veil, distorted the image of women and their personal reality.

Some of the foremost film directors have catalysed urban geographies and the settings of our lives with their cameras. In their eyes, the city acquires an emotional dimension which elevates it to artificial spaces, interior spaces, infernal spaces or uninhabitable places; it also retrieves the spaces of memory, constructs spaces of reconciliation and materialises, if need be, contemporary forms of the non-place. Their gaze gives rise to the ghetto, violence, private lives lived in public places... La ciutat dels cineastes offers a body of reflection on these mental and cinematographic transformations of the city and its inhabitants.

Albania was a victim of a cruel and bloody dictatorship which disfigured the face of the country and its inhabitants. A portrait of a country, from a physical, psychological, artistic, historical and eye-witness point of view, and of its capital, Tirana, which turns into a metaphor that allows us to extrapolate the characteristics of the Albanian case which is practically unknown in the West to others in contemporary history.

Requiem por la escalera / The staircase is a fascinating architectural feature and isnt just one of the elements that have given rise to some of the most memorable spaces in the history of architecture; it has also been widely depicted in art, literature, cinema, etc. However, today, the staircase is under threat of extinction due to its contemporary transformation into a strictly functional and standardised service space.

J. Manel Bar, Manuel Lage, Dora Palomero, Francesc Torres
The Pegaso Z-102, a model of sports and competition car designed by Wifredo Ricart, stood out for its cutting-edge design and technology in a culture which was razed to the ground by Francos regime in the post-war years. These inventions might have been the countrys chance to develop itself and its industry both at home and abroad, if the government had not elected to present Spain to the world in the form of the Eucharistic Congress.

CanalettoUna Vencia imaginria.
Andr Corboz, Annalia Delneri, Dario Succi
Far from reflecting the reality of 18th-century Venice, Antonio Canal, Canaletto, reinvented it subjectively in his paintings. He turned it into a clear, light-filled world, crystallised in the golden aura of the Enlightenment. Canalettos Venice is none other than the mirage of a city of supposed photographic qualities which seeks to exercise illusion over the viewer.

Barry Schwabsky, Terence Riley, Gloria Moure, Hans Irrek, Catherine Hrzeler, Joerg Bader, Luis Enguita, Iaki balos, Jeff Wall, Martin Tschanz
Since the birth of photography, architecture has been the artists staunchest ally. It is no accident that more and more artists are recreating the exteriors and interiors of iconic buildings through photography and a growing number of visual artists are working with architects. Indeed, there is probably no better metaphor for modernity and its changes in fortune than famous architectural landmarks.

Today, time is the victim of a progressive acceleration, of an irresistible inertia orchestrated by the hand of humankind who, paradoxically, suffers under its existence. There are many ways of approaching the concept of time: through psychology, philosophy and physics but also through art. How have artists expressed their experience of time?

La ciutat soste-nible / La ciudad sostenible / The Sustainable CityDavid Closes, Xavier Domnech, Llus Reales, Joan Rieradevall, Salvador Rueda
The present-day Western city model predominating the world over has shown itself to be clearly unequal to the task of successfully facing up to the socio-ecological problems which affect the largest human communities: energy wastage, inability to guarantee social fairness, the degradation and massive, widespread occupation of land, pollutant production systems, inability to manage waste, etc. Now is the time to rethink the city in terms of sustainability - that is, in a way which is compatible with local, regional and global ecological systems, to avoid negative consequences for our legacy to future generations. We have to return to the compact, diverse city, the traditional Mediterranean city model.

Are there substantial differences between the houses of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman cultures and the houses of today? Or are these mere accidental differences in materials, building techniques and comfort? Viewing the first maquettes of houses designed by man takes us back to that classical reflection on the form of the house, but above all, it awakens the inexhaustible passion for origins. Cultural diversity is a condition that cities have employed to make progress, in that it has forced groups of people with very differing qualities to co-operate. The recognition of plurality as a condition of society and thinking represents a new argument for the cause of peaceful co-existence and mutual respect: differences are merely the result of the need for differentiation.
