4 San Antonio Symphony

Noam Aviel is the Associate Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony, leading the Young People’s Concerts, Pops Series, Community

and Outreach concerts, and acting as the cover conductor for the Classics Series. She also conducts the Symphony in the annual, fully-staged production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, in collaboration with Ballet San Antonio.

This past season, she proudly made her conducting debut with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavik.

An opera enthusiast, Aviel served as the Assistant Conductor at OPERA San Antonio. With them, she has assisted in productions of La traviata, La bohème, Macbeth, Carmen, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Las Fundaciones de Béjar by Joseph Julian Gonzalez. She was also Music Director and Conductor of the opera A Dinner Engagement by Lennox Berkeley as part of the Illinois Festival Opera, and conducted performances of Street Scene by Kurt Weill at Illinois State University, where she served as Assistant Director of Orchestras. Aviel has served in Assistant Conductorships with Angels Vocal Art in Los Angeles and McCall SummerFest in Idaho.

Aviel holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from Illinois State University and Bachelor’s degrees in Voice Performance and Orchestral Conducting from Tel Aviv University. She was also fortunate enough to participate as a Conducting Fellow at the Eastern Music Festival, working closely with Maestro Gerard Schwarz. A native of Israel, Aviel’s earliest performance experience was as a chorus member with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.

GUEST ARTISTSChildren’s Chorus of San Antonio

The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio (CCSA) is a community-based musical non-profit organization. Through our specially crafted programming, CCSA continues to cultivate the arts and culture in San Antonio, while transforming the lives of young people through the power of music and friendship. We are shaping San Antonio’s future—one voice at a time.

Repertoire programming by CCSA has traditionally reflected San Antonio’s cultural diversity, drawing from the rich heritage of our many cultures and traditions and engaging with performance partners in informed concerts. Many of our collaborations highlight the history and traditions of our great city.More recently, CCSA has been an active participant in the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration including three performances of “Ballads of the Borderland”—based on the complex heritage of the founders and settlers of the South Texas region. This work served as the springboard for a year-long project—the Ballads Education Initiative —capturing and bringing to life the stories of our cities’ families through music and media created by the next generation of cultural guardians—our youth. Students with interests in language, history, music, media and visual art came together in an interdisciplinary format, to weave the cultural fabric of our community into our history.

Founded in 1983 by Marguerite McCormick, CCSA began as the UTSA Children’s Chorus with only 33 singers in the program. In 1993, CCSA officially became the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, an independent musical non-profit organization dedicated to providing San Antonio youth with a musical education.

Dr. Gary Mabry, interim artistic director

Dr. Mabry brings a wealth of experience to the CCSA team having been a member of the UTSA Department of Music faculty since 1991 where he founded and conducted both the UTSA Women’s Choir and the UTSA Men’s Glee

Club. He has served in a leadership capacity for the Texas Choral Directors Association and is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Mabry is a former Artistic Director and Conductor of the San Antonio Choral Society and served several years as Chorus Master of the San Antonio Opera. His choirs have presented European performances in Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague and his Yellow Rose Singers performed in 2012 and 2017 at the International Festival of the Aegean in Syros, Greece, an event for which he also served as Chorus Master. This ensemble will perform in England and Ireland during the summer of 2019. With over forty years of leadership experience in church music, he currently serves as Minister of Music for Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in San Antonio.

The ensemble has performed Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) state convention, at the Texas Bronzefest, and most recently in early December at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Membership in this ensemble is open to all students by audition. This is the ensemble’s sixth performance at the San Antonio Symphony Holiday Pops.

Diane Persellin, director

Dr. Diane Persellin is Murchison Professor of Music Education and Director of Handbells at Trinity University. An author of over 100 articles and book chapters, her research interests focus on teacher

preparation, professional development in higher education, and applications of recent research on learning. Her two academic books are published by Stylus Press. She has served as editor of the journal, General Music Today, president of Texas Music Educators Conference, and adjudicator for an annual international handbell festival in Singapore. Dr. Persellin has presented papers and workshops on music education at conferences and universities throughout the United States, Asia, South Africa, and Europe. Prior to joining the faculty at Trinity, she taught music in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Arizona. An award-winning teacher, she was recently awarded the Z.T. Scott Fellowship for Outstanding Teaching and Advising, Trinity’s highest teaching award. She was also inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame for her work with the education program of the San Antonio Symphony. Currently, Diane serves on the board of San Antonio Symphony and is organist at Shepherd King Lutheran Church.
