Striking coupé-like looks with a definitive

sporting overtone characterise the new Audi

Q3, which goes on sale in the uk later this year.

Developed throughout with emphasis on

efficiency and advanced technology, the Audi

Q3 weighs less than 1,500kg in standard trim,

while its drag coefficient of just 0.32 enhances

fuel efficiency. The bonnet and tailgate are

made of aluminum, while the passenger

compartment features many ultra-high-

strength steels for maximum occupant safety.

Three four-cylinder engines will be

available at launch – 2.0 TDI 177PS, 2.0 TFSI

170PS and 2.0 TFSI 211PS, all featuring brake

energy recuperation and engine start-stop.

The 2.0 TDI 170PS and 2.0 TFSI 211PS

units drive through Audi’s innovative 7-speed

S tronic transmission, and quattro all-wheel

drive features across the range. A 2.0 TDI

140PS model with front-wheel drive will join

the line-up later.

Inside, the Audi Q3 is a generously

equipped five-seater with a 460-litre boot, and

a full range of high-end options is available

to enable customers to build their car to their

exact specification.

Audi Chauffeur Programme goes live

Audi Q3 adopts sporting coupé-like styling, with premium luxury as standard

hoW caN you reduce your company

car fleet’s carbon footprint while still

maintaining the benefit of a company car?

It’s a common question, but one

which can be answered by imposing a

Co2 emissions cap on your fleet. At Audi,

advancing technology has dramatically

improved the efficiency of our model

range, so much so that even our larger

executive models are cleaner than much

smaller models of a few years ago.

The new Audi A6, for example, is a case

in point: Co2 emissions from 129g/km put

it at the forefront of the executive sector,

while fuel consumption is a clear 19%

improved compared with the outgoing

model. And that’s going to help when fuel

prices are topping 140p/litre for diesel.

Elsewhere, we introduce a new,

restructured, Audi Fleet Sales and look

at the future for fuel; what can we do to

minimise ever-rising costs?

Government’s ‘Budget for growth’ reduced fuel duty but other key points raised tax costs

new A6 range bolstered by hybrid concept at Detroit Show, while sensational new rS 3 Sportback debuts in Geneva

A reduction in fuel duty of 1p/litre was the main

feature of this year’s Budget, but it appears to

have had little impact on pump prices in the weeks

following the Budget.

But the previous administration’s controversial

‘fuel duty escalator’, announced in Budget 2009,

is to be abolished and replaced by a ‘fair fuel

stabiliser’ where fuel duty will increase by the retail

Price Index when oil prices are high. In years when

the oil price falls below a set trigger price, the

Government will increase fuel duty by rPI plus 1p/

litre. A trigger price of $75 per barrel is believed

appropriate, but the final level and mechanism will

be set after consultation.

other key Budget findings are detailed below:

• The 10% threshold for CO2 emissions-based

company car tax is set at 120g/km in 2011/12.

From April 2012 the 10% BIk tax threshold will

apply to cars with Co2 emissions of 99g/km or

less. The rate for cars with emissions of 100-

105g/km will be 11%, increasing by 1% for every

5g/km to the maximum of 35%.

• Vehicle Excise Duty rates rose in line with the

retail Price Index in 2011/12, applicable from

1 April 2011. Cars with Co2 emissions of up to

100g/km remain VED-exempt in 2011/12.

• The fuel benefit charge multiplier used to

calculate tax due on ‘free’ fuel for private use rose

from £18,000 to £18,800 on 6 April 2011.

• Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP)

rates rose to 45p/mile for the first 10,000

business miles from 6 April 2011, remaining at

25p/mile for business mileage over 10,000.

• The £80,000 price cap used to calculate BIK tax

was abolished on 6 April 2011, with qualifying

cars’ full P11D prices used from this date.

• Class 1A NICs, paid by employers on company

cars, rose by 1% to 13.8% on 6 April 2011.

Among the impressive statistics for the new Audi

A6 Saloon – which include Co2 emissions from just

129g/km and combined fuel consumption of up to

57.6mpg – is news that a hybrid version of the high-

tech new executive model is likely join the range.

Shown at the Detroit Show in January, and

destined to become the second hybrid in the range

after the forthcoming Audi Q5 hybrid, the A6 hybrid

concept (above) combines a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol

engine with an electric motor for zero emission

urban driving and up to 45.6mpg combined, yet will

also have 245PS on tap for strong performance.

The Audi A3 has been reinterpreted as a four-

door saloon, or ‘notchback’, in a new design

study revealed at the Geneva Motor Show.

Powered by a five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI engine

developing 408PS and driving through a seven-

speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, the

concept is the most powerful factory-produced

A3 and introduces much new technology.

The concept’s relatively low kerb weight of

1,540kg is achieved by the use of aluminium

for the doors, bonnet and bootlid, with some

components such as the grille surround, air

intake and rear apron made of carbon fibre

reinforced plastic.

Energy recuperation and a highly efficient

power steering system are among other design

efficiencies which help the concept achieve

Co2 emissions of 212g/km and combined fuel

consumption of 31.0mpg, despite a 0-62mph

time of 4.1secs and top speed of 155mph.

blistering new rS 3 Sportback (pictured below),

priced from £39,930 roTr.

The five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI 340PS engine drives

through a seven-speed S tronic transmission and the

latest quattro system to offer a 0-62mph time of

new ‘closed’ r18 TDI aims for Le Mans title

Audi Q5 hybrid nears production status

new 1.4 TFSI 185PS model joins A1 range

Super-fast broadband technology features in new A8 Long Wheelbase prototype

Audi contests Le Mans on June 11/12 with a

closed cockpit sports car, the r18 TDI, pictured

above and below, for the first time since 1999.

The latest Evolution 2 version of the new

race car was test-driven for the first time at

Sebring in March. All ten Audi race drivers

were involved in testing the car, clocking up

thousands of kilometres to generate important

findings relating to set-up, aerodynamics,

tyres, cooling and reliability.

The r18 TDI is scheduled to compete

for the first time in the 6 hour race at Spa-

Francorchamps, Belgium, on May 7.

offering the power of a V6 with the fuel

consumption of a four-cylinder TDI, the Audi

Q5 hybrid quattro being readied for production

is the pioneer of electric mobility for Audi.

It uses a full hybrid system (pictured

2.0 TFSI petrol engine with a 33 kilowatt

electric motor powered by a high performance

Lithium-Ion battery, giving a total output of

245PS and 480nm of torque.

on winding roads, which require frequent

acceleration and braking, the car’s control

system comes into its own by using electric

power, recuperation or the hybrid drive system,

depending on its requirements.

Driving at higher speeds involves both

electric and conventional petrol engines, while

A combination of turbocharging AnD super-

charging boost efficiency to a whole new level

in the A1 1.4 TFSI 185PS S line.

Despite a 0-62mph time of 6.9secs and

top speed of 141mph, Co2 emissions are just

139g/km, with combined fuel consumption of

an impressive 47.9mpg. Seven-speed S tronic

transmission is standard equipment, delivering

power to the front wheels.

Available to order now, the A1 1.4 TFSI

185PS S line is priced from £20,710 roTr.

A new even more technologically-advanced version of the A8 Long Wheelbase

featuring broadband internet with long-term evolution (LTE) technology has been

unveiled by Audi.

Developed in collaboration with communications pioneer Alcatel-Lucent,

the fourth generation (‘4G’) LTE technology offers data transfer speeds of up to

100Mbps, similar to a fixed-line broadband connection. It enables passengers in

the prototype to stream music, high-definition videos and other data on up to six

computer or mobile phone devices with ease.

While current 3G connections can offer data transfer speeds of only around

14.4Mbps, LTE can cope with large numbers of users streaming data, even at peak

times, because of its extra bandwidth.

‘We will use LTE technology to extend our advantage in automotive networking

and further consolidate the Audi connect strategy,’ explained Michael Dick, Audi Board

Member for Technical Development, during the presentation of the A8 L prototype.

he added that automotive LTE technology is being readied for series production

following Audi chairman rupert Stadler’s announcement at the Consumer Electronics

Show in Las Vegas last year that LTE technology would be used in cars by early 2011.

Just eight weeks into the year, Audi and Alcatel-Lucent have revealed the fully-

functioning A8 Long Wheelbase prototype.

FUEL 2011 //

There is a lot of oil still in the ground: some experts

estimate a trillion barrels. So why should there be a

concern over fuel prices and shortages when there is

still a plentiful supply?

The problem is not the amount of oil still available,

it’s the cost of getting it out of the ground.

Most oil fields produce the first third of their

output relatively quickly and cheaply, but the

remainder becomes increasingly hard – and expensive

– to access until the effort and cost put in exceeds the

prices that can be achieved.

Indeed, the issue is that more and more fields

are reaching this point every year. Hence deep water

drilling, a fantastically complex and expensive process

that as BP’s Deepwater Horizon platform proved last

year, can have significant environmental dangers too.

‘Easy’ oil production results in a cost of perhaps

$40 a barrel, but that point was reached around five

years ago. Apart from Saudi Arabia, which claims

to still have significant reserves of conventional

production oil, all other established oil-producing

countries are on the wrong side of the production

curve. And Saudi Arabia, not surprisingly, shows

little inclination to increase production to bring barrel

prices down.

Because the spare capacity of cheap oil is so low,

any issue in producer countries, such as Libya or

Bahrain, provokes a jittery market still further, pushing

prices up. It means that global oil production is now in

a state where marked drops in barrel price are almost

impossible to achieve. Only by more efficient use of

the oil in each barrel can the effect of the cost be

mitigated by businesses.

Projections by the International Energy Agency

suggest that we are starting to find ways to reduce

consumption. It now believes global consumption in

2030 will be 99 million barrels a day (mbpd), when

previously it had projected 130mbpd. Unfortunately, it

seems total oil production by then is likely to 90mbpd

or thereabouts.

“ANY ISSUE IN PRODUCER COUNTRIES, SUCH AS LIBYA OR BAHRAIN, PROVOKES A JITTERY MARKET STILL FURTHER”

FROM THE GROUND UPG l o b a l o i l m a r k e t s a r e t h e b i g g e s t i n f l u e n c e o n f u e l c o s t s , a n d p r i c e s h a v e b e e n i n e x o r a b l y r i s i n g . C a n w e e x p e c t a c h a n g e i n f o r t u n e s i n t h e f u t u r e ?

CAN GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION REDUCE FUEL PRICES?Even with the introduction of the Government’s ‘fair

fuel stabiliser’, abolition of the fuel duty escalator

and the cut in fuel duty, expect prices to stay high. On

Budget day, Chancellor George Osborne cut fuel duty by

1p/litre, to 57.95p/litre on diesel. But in January 2012

the inflationary recalculation will see it rise to 60.97p.

The fuel duty escalator is to be replaced with the

fair fuel stabiliser that increases tax on North Sea oil

production when oil prices are high.

When oil prices are high (with the Government

assuming a figure around $75 per barrel as the tipping

point between high and low) fuel duty will increase

by inflation only. UK oil and gas production is more

profitable at such times, so the Government believes

it is fair that companies should contribute more;

accordingly the supplementary charge on oil and gas

production will increase to 32% from around 20%.

But it will not bring prices down, although it may

well mitigate against considerably higher costs.

THE SOLUTION: A MORE EFFICIENT FLEET

Looking at the Government’s action and global

energy trends, businesses that are hoping for oil and

fuel prices to drop significantly to cut fleet budgets

will be waiting a long time. It seems only proactivity

will effect change.

Obviously choosing more efficient cars will help:

every Audi, for example, uses the latest TDI and

TFSI engine technology for maximum efficiency.

Many Audi models are also equipped with state-of-

the-art engine start-stop and brake recuperation

technology which saves up to 0.4 litre of fuel for

every 60 miles.

Educating and even actively training driving

employees to think economy first and pace second

can also pay real, quantifiable, dividends.

And then there are the simple things such as

keeping tyres inflated correctly and driving with

more appreciation for your surroundings to keep

momentum up and braking and acceleration down.

THE INTERVIEW //

Extending the professionalism of the Audi Fleet

Sales team is a key priority for Roger Grainger,

National Fleet Sales Manager at Audi UK.

The strategy has seen the development of a

revised fleet sales structure with a new role of

Business Development Manager as well as two Key

Account Managers supported by six regionally based

Fleet Sales Managers split over revised territories.

Joining Ruth Austin as the second Key Account

Manager is Mark Hamilton, while the new Business

Development Manager role will be filled by Alison

Davis who moves over from her previous position as

Fleet Sales Manager.

‘The new structure will ensure we look after

our larger fleet customers to develop long-term

partnerships,’ says Grainger, ‘while our Business

Development Manager will start to build dialogue with

fleets where we have little or no direct relationship.’

Meanwhile, the team of six Fleet Sales Managers

will liaise directly with operators of 100-plus vehicles,

and work closely with the Local Business Development

Managers in the Audi Centre network.

Local Business Development Managers can

provide an invaluable local resource for the business

community. Working with the Audi UK Fleet Sales

Team, they help ensure that no corporate customer,

whatever their fleet size, is left wanting for

comprehensive account management.

‘In effect, the Fleet Sales Managers will also adopt

an element of business development in their roles,’

continues Grainger. ‘Company car drivers local to

each Audi Centre can expect to be treated like retail

customers, with a full service tailored to their needs

available from their LBDM.’

“WITHOUT A DOUBT WE ARE ENTERING AN ERA WHERE COST CONTROL HAS A GREATER MEANING THAN EVER.”

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

The latest technology ensures Audi has one of the

cleanest model ranges on sale, with over 30 models

available with CO2 emissions of 120g/km or less.

‘Audi TDI technology is the main driver behind

such efficiency,’ says Grainger.

‘With models such as the new A6 2.0 TDI with its

CO2 emissions of just 129g/km, it’s possible to blend

the luxury and prestige of a larger car with reduced

BIK tax liabilities while keeping an eye on operating

costs and the environment.

‘That’s a real consideration for many fleets

where prestige plays an important part in their own

brand image,’ he continues, ‘and in situations where

the company car is central to staff incentive and

retention, it’s essential to offer cars that deliver

while helping to drive down carbon footprint.’

THE FUTURE

‘Without a doubt we are entering an era where

cost control has a greater meaning than ever,’ says

Grainger. ‘We like to think we are pioneering new

developments, with new technology striving for

more efficient solutions to everyday situations.

‘The new Fleet Sales structure is just part of our

strategy for a stronger future,’ says Grainger. ‘While

we intend to build on our relationships with larger

fleets, we will be connecting even more positively

with smaller operators and company car drivers.

‘Our new team of Fleet Sales Managers will be

working with Local Business Development Managers

to channel enquiries to Audi Centres, where

customers can sample for themselves – perhaps for

the first time – the Audi Brand Experience. We feel

sure they won’t be disappointed.’

INTRODUCING A CO2 CAP //

Capping company car CO2 emissions levels is a

favourite business strategy in the current economic

climate; it’s not hard to see why setting a limit can

produce benefits for employers and employees alike.

The increasing efficiency of the latest models,

without compromise in performance or comfort,

makes it easy for drivers to choose an attractive

company car. Rising fuel prices and significant tax

breaks for lower-emitting models also underline the

sense of selecting cleaner, more economical, cars.

Question is, where exactly should your CO2 cap

fall? The answer is that it will vary for most businesses

depending on need, but by far the most applied figure

at the top end of choice lists is 160g/km.

Cars emitting 160g/km of CO2 or more are subject

to higher tax than cleaner models, and overall could

cost as much as £30 per car per month more whether

you lease or buy.

LUXURY WITH LOWER EMISSIONS

With luxury executive models now becoming

available with CO2 emissions well below the 160g/km

threshold, even the boardroom is likely to find a cap

acceptable: the new Audi A6 Saloon, for example, has

CO2 emissions starting from just 129g/km for the

2.0 TDI 177PS SE.

So just how stringent can you be further down

the choice list? There are plenty of cars with CO2

emissions even below 110g/km that will do the

job for many company drivers. But it must be

remembered that for many employees the company

car is a strong benefit, and pushing drivers into

unsuitable vehicles purely to lower overall emissions

and costs may have a negative impact.

Arval, one of Britain’s biggest leasing

companies, is conscious of the employee benefits

of company cars. Jon Mackney, Head of Consultancy

‘ INCRE ASING EFFICIENCY MAKES IT E ASY FOR DRIVERS TO CHOOSE AN AT TR ACTIVE COMPANY C AR’I n t r o d u c i n g a C O 2 e m i s s i o n s c a p f o r y o u r c o m p a n y c a r f l e e t n e e d n o t b e a s p a i n f u l a s i t s o u n d s , a s s e t t i n g a l i m i t c a n w o r k w e l l f o r e m p l o y e r s , e m p l o y e e s a n d t h e e n v i r o n m e n t

at Arval, comments: ‘While managing fleet CO2

emissions is a positive activity, we have seen a

number of instances where companies are capping

CO2 at very low levels while also offering employees

the option of opting out of the company car scheme

and taking cash instead.

‘Faced with a more restricted choice of company

car, increasing numbers of staff were migrating

to the cash option – false economy if all it does is

drive employees into opting out and choosing more

polluting private cars.’

DON’T OVERLOOK THE INCENTIVE

There’s also the issue of staff retention, as

restricting choice too much may see key staff

leaving for other employers that offer vehicles

more suited to their lifestyle aspirations. After all,

the provision of the right kind of company car is an

emotive subject for many.

Mackney adds: ‘Fleets must find a happy medium

and capping CO2 is an approach that we often

recommend. Arval’s own company car choice list is

restricted by emissions and we have worked with

a number of companies that have succeeded in

getting this balance right.’

ADOPT A GRADUAL APPROACH

If you are considering introducing CO2 caps for

specific employee grades, it is often best to take

a gradual approach, but with a plan to gradually

reduce the cap as improving technologies allow.

This is especially useful because inflation-

adjusted fuel prices have been rising by around 2.5%

per year for nearly a decade; in turn, this means

fleets need to cut their fuel use by 10% every four

years just to hold their costs level.

It is also worth basing your vehicle choice list on

whole-life costs rather than purely CO2. Because

this approach takes account of fuel used and

residual values – which are often stronger for more

fuel-efficient vehicles – it tends to favour vehicles

with lower emissions, meaning that all the elements

go hand-in-hand and you can bring emissions down

without adopting any draconian steps.

Another tactic to bring in a capping policy is to

incentivise drivers. Several fleets have introduced

schemes whereby employees are entitled to choose

a higher-spec model in return for agreeing to choose

one with lower emissions of CO2.

So introduced intelligently, a fleet with capped

CO2 at various levels, set with the help of whole-

life cost analysis and attractive, fit-for-purpose,

models can offer a win-win-win outcome – where

the employer, employees and the environment can

all derive significant benefit.
