Why Flushing and Changing Audi Transmission Fluid (ATF) Is ImportantSome Audi authorities suggest that you don't need to change your Audi's automatic transmissionfluid. We simply feel this is illogical. An Audi automatic transmission has hundreds of movingcomponents, such as needle bearings, pressure pumps, clutch packs, servo pistons and seals.These internal components mesh with one another, begin to wear, and create fine metallicparticles which contaminate the Audi automatic transmission fluid. Over time, the Audi automatictransmission fluid (ATF) and paper filament transmission filter become contaminated with theseparticles. New transmission fluid is nearly clear in color. If you've ever seen the dark color of oldtransmission fluid, you'll agree that it seems very logical that changing the Audi automatictransmission fluid and filter are needed.

Audi Transmission Fluid Change IntervalsAudi automatic transmission fluid levels should be checked at regular intervals. Changing yourAudi automatic transmission fluid helps extend the life of your transmission by properly lubricatingthe main shaft bearings and synchros. Audi automatic transmission fluid should be changed every30,000 miles ­ 60,000 miles. The intervals depend on your operating conditions. The Audiautomatic transmission fluid and filter should be serviced every 30,000 miles when driving inheavy city traffic, hot weather, trailer pulling, and other severe driving conditions. The 60,000miles change interval applies to those who mainly put on highway miles. With the exeption of theDSG transmission, which the factory manual recommends be changed every 30,000 ­ 40,000miles.

Audi automatic transmission fluid levels should be checked at regular intervals. Most 1992­onAudi models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the Audi transmission fluid level.To fill and check the level of the Audi automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug onthe side or bottom (location depends on model) of the transmission drain pan.

How To Step 1Make sure the vehicle is perfectly level.When the transmission fluid is still warm, but thevehicle has cooled down, remove the Auditransmission drain plug and drain the fluid into anappropriate container.

What is the difference between an AudiInline Mounted and an Audi TransverseMounted Transmission?

Audi models came with many differenttransmissions. These terms (inline andtransverse) can refer to either the engineor the transmission.

Most earlier Audi models came equippedwith an inline mounted automatictransmission. An inline transmission ispositioned in the engine compartmentforward to aft (front to rear) in the body ofthe car. Some newer Audi models cameequipped with transverse mountedautomatic transmissions. Transversemounted transmissions are positionedsideways (left to right) in the body of thecar.
