Audacity – Sound Editing and Sound Effects This handout explains how to use Audacity to edit a sound clip and add sound effects. BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Listen to the Example File 1. Play the example file 2. Review the script 3. Listen to the effects and timing

Step 1: Open the Original Clip in Audacity 1. Open Audacity 2. Click File > Open 3. Select the file “audacity_tutorial.wav”

Result: The file opens and the waveform displays Step 2: Play the File and Compare to the Script 1. Click the Play button 2. Listen to the file and make note of differences

Step 3: Edit the Waveform – Remove Distortions 1. Click the Stop button 2. Click the Selection Tool (I Beam) 3. Select the first distortion at the beginning of the file 4. Click Edit > Cut. You can also press the Delete key.

Result: The selection is removed. 5. Select the second distortion at the end of the file. 6. Click Edit > Cut.

Result: The selection is removed.

Step 4: Edit the Waveform – Move Clip to Match Script 1. Click the Stop button 2. Locate the portion of the waveform that contains the following text – “You can also use audacity to edit existing sounds.” Note: To zoom in or out, use the Zoom button.

3. Click the Selection Tool, then select the portion of the waveform containing the sentence to move.

4. Click the Stop button 5. Click Edit > Cut 6. Click in the middle of the silence between sentence 3 and sentence 5. 7. Click Edit > Paste

Result: The selection is pasted between sentence 3 and sentence 5.

Step 5: Add an Echo Sound Effect 1. Select the portion of the waveform and the trailing silence that contains the following text from sentence 5 – “=different sound effects ”

2. Click the Stop button 3. Click Effect > Echo= Result: The Echo window displays

4. Change the Delay Time to 0.5 sec and the Decay Factor to 0.3. 5. Preview the sound effect, then click OK.

Result: The selection has an echo effect.

Step 6: Change the Pitch 1. Select the portion of the waveform that contains the text from sentence 6. 2. Click the Stop button 3. Click Effect > Change Pitch

Result: The Change Pitch window opens 4. Move the slider to the right to change the pitch from B to G. 5. Preview the sound effect, then click OK.

Result: The selection has a higher pitch.

Step 7: Change the Speed 1. Select the portion of the waveform that contains the text from sentence 7. 2. Click the Stop button 3. Click Effect > Change Speed

Result: The Change Speed window opens 4. Move the slider to the left to change the speed to a -14 Percentage Change. 5. Preview the sound effect, then click OK.

Result: The selection has a slower speed (deeper sound).

Step 8: Add Intro Music 1. Click Project > Import Audio 2. Select the clip “Homeward_Bound_hifi.mp3”

Result: A stereo waveform opens below the tutorial waveform 3. Click the Stop button 4. Click the Selection Tool and select the first 8 seconds of the Homeward_Bound waveform.

5. Click Edit > Trim to trim the waveform (remove the unselected portion) Result: The intro music plays along with the narration and stops at the 8 sec point

Step 9: Fade Out the Intro Music 1. Click the Stop button 2. Click the Selection Tool, then select the last 4 seconds of the intro music. 3. Click Effect > Fade Out Result: The intro clip fades out

Step 10: Shift the Tutorial to Start with Intro Music Fade Out 1. Click Time Shift Tool. 2. Drag start point of the Tutorial clip to the 6-second point.

Step 11: Save the Audacity Project File Note: The Audacity Project File (*.aup) is used by Audacity to keep track of your changes. This file is not the file sound file and cannot be opened in other programs. This file can be used to make edits later. 1. Click File > Save Project As= 2. When prompted, select the save location (Audacity project folder). 3. Enter the file name name_audacity_final, then click SAVE.

Step 12: Export as an MP3 Note: This final step will create the MP3 that can be played in iTunes, Windows Media Player, and other media players. 1. Click File > Export as MP3

Result: the Export MP3 window displays

2. Select the location of lame_enc.dll (found in the Audacity project folder) 3. Edit the ID3 tag by entering the file information

Format: ID3v2 radio button Title: Audacity Tutorial Artist: Your first and last name Album: Course ID (ex. MET6223) Track Number: 1 Year: 2008 Genre: Other Comments: <leave this field blank>

4. Click OK to save the file

Step 13: Check your MP3 file Confirm that your file plays correctly by opening it in iTunes or Windows Media Player. Confirm that the file extension is MP3 and confirm that the file size is about 500 KB.
