" omas Love moved to Perth in 1866 and set up business as a commission and insurance agent. He had diversi# ed into auctions and sales of furniture by 1869 and in 1872 he obtained his auctioneer’s and valuator’s certi# cate." e # rm run by " omas Love was diversi# ed from the very start encompassing cabinetmakers and upholsterers, auctioneers, appraisers, land measurers, and furniture warehouses. " e premises in St John’s Place proved too small and a gradual expansion began along St John’s Place and later to Canal Street in purpose built premises. " omas Love became a councillor on Perth Town Council in 1877 and was Provost between 1902 and 1905. " omas Love died in 1909 and his son, " omas junior took over the running of the business. Tom Love, son of " omas Love junior, took over the business in 1934. Further diversi# cation resulted in the opening of a garage franchise in Perth. Elements of the business were gradually disposed of in the 1980s. " e auction house at Canal Street was sold but still continues to trade under the title of Loves.
